Hendrix had been working on and off with the members of the band Traffic as he recorded Electric Ladyland. Traffic guitarist Dave Mason caught Hendrix at a party and the two discussed Bob Dylan’s newest album, John Wesley Harding, containing “All Along The Watchtower.” Hendrix, long fascinated with Dylan, decided to cover the song on the album. On the resulting track, Mason plays rhythm on a 12-string acoustic guitar.
BTW … I saw Mason at a small club at Harrah’s Southshore Tahoe … nearby his residence in the Carson, NV valley … with this exact same lineup. The bass player and drummer are off the charts fantastic. And Mason simply makes his guitar sing … even as an old awkward looking bald man.
Funny how royalties from a huge song can be so important. I remember Ian Tyson claiming that Neil Young’s version of Four Strong Winds allowed him to buy a ranch in Alberta.
