I, For One, Welcome Our New Self-Driving Overlords

Yes: Is AI making us dumber?

Early research into how generative AI affects our brains has resurfaced the same talking points: overreliance on AI will weaken mental persistence, flatten creativity, atrophy our critical thinking skills, and degrade our relationships. Experts in machine learning, creativity, social behavior I spoke to said we can glean some insight from the fallout of past innovations, but the totalizing pervasiveness of AI is unparalleled.

  1. There are already too many low information voters. I cannot see that AI will make them any more dumber!

  2. “Early research into how generative AI affects our brains has resurfaced the same talking points…”

How surprising to see “scientists” desperately trying to publish so they won’t perish, announce a shocking finding based on their “early” research. If you look back into the last 50+ years you’ll see they said exactly the same thing about comic books, transistor radios, computers, personal computers, video games, the Internet, phones, social media, and now AI.

The intelligent individual will now wonder if words on a page or words on a screen can actually affect the human brain in any measurable way.

Gun control, climate change and Covid, my friends. Keep these things in mind, and remember that lying liars lie.

Socrates thought that writing would atrophy thinking and erode critical thought and memory.

I remembered that but had to Google whether it was Socrates or Aristotle. I must be getting more dumber.
      I blame comic books.

    2. If you look at voting patterns over the last 50 years you may start thinking that the scientists are right.

If you have children, grandchildren or even simply empathize with children, because you were one… a profound commentary.

    1. I was watching a bit of the Charlie Kirk trial this morning … listening to the video testimony of the trans-weirdo, Lance Twigs. He was asked if Tyler Robinson was “political” … and Twigs said no. What he DID say is that they mostly ‘communicated’ with each other through social media and gaming platforms.

Sadly, our children are being raised by over-amplified weirdos typing furiously on social media. Yeah … not political … except for the constant drivel of the loser kingdom.

  4. interesting. sooooo if the ‘conspidddddacy’ folks are correct, and the ‘elites’ want a dumber down populace, incapable of organized thought that *might* translate into, oh, say, an orgnaized uprising, then would they do stuff like this? create conditions that impede logical complex thought?
and what do we have? a dumbing down relying on technology that invariably is scalable and accelerates things.
voila. l figured it out. all part of a multi-generational PLAN.

  5. Well … the Duck Duck Go AI is telling the truth … for now.

AI is contributing to cognitive decline by promoting reliance on technology for tasks that require critical thinking, leading to reduced mental engagement and creativity. Studies suggest that overuse of AI tools can weaken our cognitive abilities and memory retention.

    1. Pretty much. It started a generation or two ago when they allowed calculators in elementary school math classes.

  6. I use AI to fix old photos. You can delete ex-wives! LOL It does a wonderful job, and I just had a long conversation with Meta AI about guitars and amps that I own. Quite knowledgeable “chap”.

    1. Call me when its meaningful.
But can you delete court-mandated alimony obligations?

  7. Depends on the person maybe.
I think government propaganda is doing well through AI.
But they’ve been using Billboards and TV for decades so its just another tool for the bastards.
And only idiots believe the government.

  8. AI is a great tool and resource. It will work wonders for smart and intentional people and it will help mitigate retards being retarded if we can condition them to “check first with Claude” as a part of their operating system.

  9. Every muscle in the human body, including the brain, is strengthened and made more powerful by disuse.
