Kubrick’s takes: you don’t necessarily want to use take one. It can be startling to hear what kind of goofy shit the Beatles would be doing before they pulled themselves together.
There have nonetheless been great take-one records. And I was in a band once. And I treasure a clip of our version of “El Paso (Take 1)”, which consists of me bellowing drunkenly, “Out in the west Texas town of El Paso, I fell in love with a Mexican babe!”, followed by our producer/leader, softly but urgently, saying, “CUT!”
