A balanced budget at any level of government in Canada is wishful thinking on steroids these days. John Q. Voter’s capacity for critical thinking was numbed so effectively by the Covid spending spree that any political party would be wiped out at the polls if they implemented anything beyond token spending cuts.
The Parti Québécois is promising to balance the provincial budget by 2028-2029, a year earlier than the current Quebec government’s projections.
The PQ’s plan calls for a $6.6-billion reduction in government spending over five years.
The current trade kurfuffle with the US, and the US’s current fiscal problems, might serve as a wake up call to both Canadians and its governments. Canada needs to be fiscally solid to weather storms.
So far Carney has only discussed COVID era type reactions, programs like CEWS etc. In other words, pay people who lose jobs to stay home. Good luck with fiscal responsibility.

The origin of the “51st state” comment by Trump was Trudeau Jr. admitting in the initial trade negotiations that if Canada had to uphold its 2% of GDP defense commitment under NATO and did not have fully tariff-free access to the US market, the Canadian economy would collapse. Trump’s response was that Canada may as well become the 51st state then, since it was already effectively acting as one – outsourcing its national defense to the US federal government and expecting barrier-free trade to the several united states.
The fever dreams of the “elbows up” crowd aside, Canada cannot survive without access to the US market. Carney and Trudeau had their chance to negotiate the same 10% across-the-board tariff deal with the US that every other country got but decided to play politics instead. If Trudeau was correct, then they may have had no choice. But if they had no choice then, they have less of one now and a severe depression or sovereign default is the only future for this country.

Well of course when Quebec receives over 13 billion in equalization it should be a slam/dunk to have a balanced budget. Although I do like the idea of cutting the size of government…..at all levels, really.

Every province, most municipalities and the fcking feds are all a spending shitshow because women are mental and they vote like retards who want French fries for every meal.
Just think how much better off Alberta will be if they separate. Should the US of A rid themselves of providing military aid to the rest of the world and make the bloodsuckers pay their share, and should the US of A free themselves of providing disaster relief and food aid to the rest of the world, then that saving will result in a benefit to the American taxpayer. The same example in a nutshell with Alberta sending money to the ROC. We accept the numbers the government tells us without question but, big BUT here, has the governments ever lied to us before!
It’s very common for a political party to promise to balance the budget, but once they get into government, there is always some “unexpected one-time expense”, after which the budget will be balanced…really it will. OK not this year but next year for sure.

The PQ are leading in the polls at Canada338 by 5 points, enough to take minority status in their legislature though I don’t know who they’ll take as partners in that.
Hopefully the PQ win and take themselves seriously, both on deficits and on the separation referendum.
Ask any Canadian what the plan is to repay the $1.7 billion in borrowed money.
