What’s the point of such half-measures? Do the Tories think that voters would reject the idea of permanent tax relief? Why does the idea of strongly differentiating themselves from the Liberals seem to fill them with dread? In fact, why not openly call for the elimination of the industrial carbon tax and lower gas prices by taking that route?
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says the federal government should give Canadians at least another 10 months of relief at the pumps.

Poilievre is a Trump-hating wimp with a resume thinner than a razor blade.
In fairness, thick resumes can challenge the teeth unduly.
The Conservatives did call for that in the last election and lost. They’ve lost on platforms of logic and reason for so long I think they’re getting gun shy.
They lost because they were too stupid to capitalize on demonizing Trudeau, the most hated man in the country, instead of demonizing President Trump.
Coming along as a Johnny Come Lately and attacking President Trump as pathetic “Me-Too” is just so suck-up.
Point out it wasn’t Zoolander alone but the entire Liberal caucus plus the NDP needed to wreck the country and make it the underperforming G7 basket case that it was.
Yes, Pierre Poilievre shouted ‘Axe the Tax’ over and over ad nauseum in Question Period.
Guy sounded like a used car salesman.
What was missing? How about telling everyone that carbon capture is a make-believe solution to a make believe-problem and Gang Green + affiliates have been robbing us all into the poor house.
Pierre Poilievre had to challenge the basis on which the Lie the need to tax in the first place stood on.
Let’s Axe the Tax and spend like drunken sailors while the Planet burns, shall we?
Doesn’t sell so good when you put it like that, eh?
Not logic and reason by my reconing
I agree with all the comments here pointing out how weak the Conservatives are on the real issues issues. The basic problem with too many conservative politicians is cowardice. They haven’t the guts to say that most of the Liberal policies are utter bullshit designed to defraud voters.
But the underlying truly basic problem is deeply stupid Canadian voters who allow themselves to be defrauded. No only allow the fraud, but revel in it loudly shouting down opposition while lifting their elbows.
Trump got elected three times because the majority of Americans agree with him. The Liberals have ruled for the last fifteen years because the majority of Canadians agree with them.
Get out while you still can.
“The Liberals have ruled for the last fifteen years because the majority of Canadians agree with them.”
It’s been eleven, but is sure feels like fifteen.
Well, the in medium term of the Cons, resembles what they always have been, save for most of the Harper term.
Liberals in Blue Suits.
Throughout Covid, they voted in lockstep with their Liberal brethren.
Nuff said.
PP can’t think outside of the system he’s been inside of most of his adult life.
Ironically, it’s not much different than sending people “grocery” cheques in the mail – bribing the half-wits with their own money.
The Forever Government will do what is best for the Forever Government.
PP knows that and so do his Cons.
at times when lm pyssed at Conservatives theya re renamed CONservatists.
expresses my contempt for the likes of Brian Mulruin.
l like ‘nikcuf around with the spellings to send a message. its never complimentary.
isnt that right p.m. Stephen Harpooned?
Tax relief should be temporary — as temporary as the income tax.
As I’ve oft-noted/lamented, the idea having broad-based, Reagan-style tax relief has, to my knowledge, NEVER been suggested by ANY Canadian political party in ANY national – or save for perhaps Mike Harris, ANY provincial – election campaign…EVER. I am I the only one who finds this super weird?*
*especially since a recent Fraser Institute report noted that Canadian families now spend more on taxes than on basic necessities! Any real conservative politician or party should be able take this disturbing factoid and run with it – any takers???
https://www.fraserinstitute.org/commentary/canadian-families-spend-more-taxes-basic-necessities
it WILL work but along with tax cuts there MUST be belt tightening and savings e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e theya re found. heeyyyyyyoooo HoC STOP SQUANDERING our money. what you leave WITH us is going BACK into spending for . . . . . for . . . . . . . . . . . . . manufactured goods, services, groceries supporting local farmers, hiring doctors which means more of us stay ALIVE in spite of the ‘popularity’ of MAiD.
the rest is details that can be analyzed and the successful effective stuff implemented even more.
ah. but what DO we get? p.m. Carnage who dumps $1.X00,000,000 aka billion with a B’ into his condo developer buddie’s bank account because ah gee, didnt time it right . . . .
(is this an instance of liberal VOTERS shooting themselves in the nuts or tnuc whichever applies?)
“Do the Tories think that voters would reject the idea of permanent tax relief?”
The retards probably WOULD reject a permanent tax cut. Tax cuts are racist, didn’t you know?
Tax cuts threaten the free stuff, doncha know?
TAX ME
I’M CANADIAN
Should be on an Alberta Independence T-Shirt.
” Why does the idea of strongly differentiating themselves from the Liberals seem to fill them with dread?”
Because they ARE the Liberals. They just choose to use a different name for their party.
The Quebec dairy cartel artificially maintaining high prices? They support that.
Accusing all Canadians of genocide over residential schools? They support that.
Continuing mass immigration despite the severe housing crisis? They support that.
Legislative attacks on our free speech? They support that.
Enshrining loaded terms like ‘Islamophobia’ into Canadian law? They support that.
Vote the ‘Conservative’ Party of Canada into office again and you help the Liberals ensure that *nothing ever changes* in this country.
Yes sir!
Yep
Saved me some typing.
isnt it at some level, so curious how that mindset caputed the CONservatists as well?
like, the LIEberals tapped into the unspoken rule that Canaduhians *know* the ‘freebies’ hnge on CONTINUING to cast the ballot as they do, forgetting it’s. their. money. right. from. the. start. anyway.
soooooooooooo it has to for some whacko reason go into the hands of gubbamint who ‘know better’ BEFORE its given back (minus finder’s fee). allllll part of that freaky species Canaduhianus voterus.
I am going to lay out my understanding of the situation with regards to the question(s) raised. I like to model this as a spigot. Suspending the tax is closing the spigot–slowing the tax down to zero, but leaving it in the laws, regulations and all that jazz. Eliminating the spigot is ripping out the spigot and connecting pipe–it is completely gone from the laws, regulations and all that jazz. As long as the spigot is off, the results are the same–no flow. Furthermore, they can pretend that they got rid of a tax, they can pretend that they think your money is not their money.
However, what if they want to turn the spigot back on? That is where everything changes. As long as it is on the books, they are freer to adjust the flow or tax rate. If it was eliminated, then they have to go through all the rigmarole of adding a new tax and any associated backlash and bad press. That is much more costly.
Not only does every government want more money, the future ones (even if conservative) are likely going to “need” more. From the perspective of a hopeful future government, they do not want to lose the easier option of re-opening a spigot.
L – “That industrial carbon tax spigot is connected to my largest vein !”
Citizens of Alberta and Saskatchewan: Pull that spigot out of your vein, get up and walk out of the lunatic asylum(Animal Farm)and breathe free. While you still can.
Before Carney’s digital services, social credit rating and confiscatory exit tax leaves you standing in your underwear, on the Geordie Howe bridge trying to hitch a ride south.
(Also, note once you have a criminal conviction for a criminal offence of hurting someone’s feelings. You’re hooped, to live out your time here with Ottawa’s jackboot on your face.)
” While you still can.”
yep.
its like the ‘time portal’ in a STOS episode. or any other portal portrayal.
and failing so, they time travellers are STUCK forever in some hand-to-mouth wilderness.
aka ‘life imitating art’.
if AB is STUCK in the more ‘immediate’ difficulties and there will be you can be sure Carney’s bunch aka TROC will MAKE SURE AB ‘suffers’ the ‘consequence’ of their ‘betrayal’.
or focus on the medium to long term. prominent the TOTAL ABSENCE of transfer payments.
ahem.
your point is sadly correct.
and it is the *v-e-r-y m-e-c-h-a-n-i-s-m * by which hyperinflation will manifest.
the ‘detonator’ for that event will be crushing taxation. ‘spending power’ ie spending of bloody NECESSITIES FIRST will be limited more and more because the ‘bloodletting’ (very popular among those murderous ‘medical’ ‘experts’ of the day) KILLING the patient with their ‘treatment’.
its the same general phenomenon. the ‘cure’ is worse that the ‘disease’.
the ones in ‘power’ are stuck in ‘dont just sit there do something’ mode
its the same syndrome that gave us the almost-civilization-destroying arms race, because . . . .
ummmmm . . . . . . . . . because . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ummm, we dunnowhudelztoodoo.
Appears as though a vicious circle has formed.
Here’s where I remind you that the AVERAGE price of gasoline in TN is $3.65/gal.
https://gasprices.aaa.com/?state=TN
Meanwhile … here is Trump-hating, Trump-blaming CA … the AVERAGE price of gasoline is almost +$2.00 MORE per gal. at $5.57/gal.
https://gasprices.aaa.com/?state=CA
It seems that Trump-hating, Trump-blaming Canada … is just like CA. The PEOPLE will be made to feel the PAIN of Trump at the pumps! The price of oil is $84/bbl today. Meh.
Elbows out! Right into each others necks.
Call it $1.70 for gas here in Parasite City thats about $4.50 USD for an American gallon.
https://gasprices.aaa.com/?state=LA
https://gasprices.aaa.com/?state=TX
$1.70/L CDN is $6.439/Gal CDN. And that is with the 10% Excise Tax suspended for now.
Making it worse than California by almost a buck. Switching to USD makes it look better, but it isn’t better because we get paid in CDN. When the Excise Tax comes back, gas instantly costs $6.50+.
And people wonder why RVs are not selling these days…
What better way to de-industrialize to Net Zero than to make energy unaffordable. Oops, I meant “clean, green, and cheap” [sic]
Haven’t you heard your governor running around claiming that California has lower taxes than Texas?
He’s running around claiming all manner of fabulist shit. I actually expect he’ll off himself like that fake Professor from Cambridge any day now …
Key & Peele’s sketch, “Let’s Play Fronthand Backhand” may be instructional here.
https://youtu.be/AKebtRtu6YU?si=6ZXRuLdoQP3NcQYz
One can argue which hand represents which party, though hopefully the overall point isn’t lost.
Should PP recommend abolishing the carbon tax at this time, the MSM would be all over him “climate denier” “during worst wildfire season ever, PP wants to abandon carbon strategy”, and etc.
However, the Libranos have already paused the tax once, and the MSM did not excoriate them for that, so he’s safe to ask for the extension.
Art of the possible.
L – Art of the timid Conservatives, still running for second place, failing to risk extolling a vision out of the economic, cultural and political wilderness.
1/2 measures?
Cause they are 1/2 assed frauds.
The Kleptocracy never campaigns for political power on “Stop the stealing” but always on “Managing public wealth better”..
Independence is the least bloody escape route..
But know this, they are all parasites.
Parasites never voluntarily release their grip on their host.
Just ask/observe any Tick.
the very sad truth, hypothetically, if PP were pm and say won a 2nd majority. = 9 0r 10 yrs of
CPC = government of the day, wd we see corruption and graft stories in the news?
youre denmaddog right we wd. you can be sure the liberal press w be ALL OVER IT ‘in a heartbeat’.
l betcha the firt big one wd show up no later than half way mark,
all this based on 100 yrs of Cdn lib-con-lib-con-lib-con wiper blades.
what does this tell us abt the nature of Cdn politics? ‘uniparty central’ mebbe???
I’m pretty much done voting in federal elections. As has been pointed out quite well here, there really is no significant difference between the parties. It’s like having to choose between Bozo1, Bozo2 and Bozo3.
I’m done until something amazing happens. If it ever happens.
Can you see PP as “Mike the Knife” running a campaign reforming the tax system, and making parts of the government smaller?
No one can, and it’s not like the CPC braintrust would ever be willing to do the hard work to run that campaign.
He’s got nothing.
Nothing different than bobblehead; nothing new; nothing clever: and certainly nothing brave.
we need a John A level.
a Winston Churchill level.
at least a Dief the Chief Conservative level.
we’ve got barely better than a Joe Clark (aka ‘Joke Lark’) level if truth be told.
Clark fought for the inclusion of property rights in the Charter.
Clark understood the importance of good relations with the US.
Clark was putzy, but looking back, he seems like Rambo when compared to Pee-pee.
