When I first saw the headline, I thought maybe my provincial government was finally seeing the bigger picture. But again I was disappointed. We’re still at the “definition” stage of micromanagement.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew says his government is working on the definition of a grocery store as it considers where to apply a tax cut on food.

“It depends on what your definition of “is” is.”
Slick Willy Clinton
Tax the shit out of everybody (especially farmers) then subsidize selected items to allow people to survive – with taxpayer money.
Manitoba: old Saulteaux word meaning Where Manitou dicks around.
It derives from “Manitou”, God or great spirit, and “ba”, a dismissive grunt. “God scoffs” is my translation.
I was actually taught that it was “voice of God”, so “God speaks” is a justifiable translation, “God scoffs” is taking liberties. The local tradition was that young people at puberty would go to the Narrows of Lake Manitoba and camp out, and after they’d starved appropriately God would speak to them and tell them their true name, the purpose of their life, what lottery numbers to buy, time, weather and traffic reports, things like that. It was a transcendently and inspiringly beautiful place, quite suited to God. It’s nice enough now, but it’s been extensively developed and much of the magic is lost. In its time it was one of those unusual locations where land, water and sky seem to be telling you things about themselves, and it was certainly fit for purpose if you wanted to listen to God.
Drunk Canoe should stick to Beating Women and Taxi Drivers.
Googling “what is a grocery store” would speed things along somewhat.
Probably unable to define what a “woman” is.
Here you go, Wab….
The word “grocer” originates from the Old French “grossier,” meaning “wholesaler,” which itself comes from the Latin “grossus,” meaning “large” or “coarse.”
The term “grocer” first appeared in Middle English around the early 15th century, initially referring to a wholesale dealer who bought and sold goods in bulk. The Old French word grossier literally meant “wholesaler,” derived from Medieval Latin grossarius, which also meant “dealer in quantity”. The Latin root grossus conveyed the sense of “large, coarse, or thick,” reflecting the idea of trading in large quantities rather than individual items.
In medieval England, grocers were often wholesalers of spices, sugar, and other imported goods, and they formed guilds such as the Company of Grocers of London, which still exists today as a ceremonial organization. Over time, the meaning of “grocer” shifted from wholesale trade to include retail merchants selling food and household items in smaller quantities.
The related term “grocery” originally referred to the goods sold by a grocer, such as tea, sugar, and spices, and by the 17th century in American English, it came to denote the shops themselves. By the 19th century, “grocery” also extended to include stores selling a wider range of food and household products, reflecting the evolution of the profession from bulk trading to neighborhood retail.
Thus, the word “grocer” encapsulates a historical journey from bulk wholesaling in the Middle Ages to the modern concept of retail food and household goods sellers, with its linguistic roots emphasizing size and quantity.
Napolean loathed the English as a nation of shopkeepers.
Not a one of them can cut spending.
Because politicians at every level everywhere – although there are exceptions – are cowards.
I’d say Bob Canoe and his ndp government shitpumps are somewhat daft.
The committee to determine the proper wording of the land use acknowledgement hasn’t finished deliberating, so no more committee meetings will be held until they get that right. Government types consider that “work.”
Grocery stores and customers love when every single item has a different tax category.
in the Dominican Republic, there are potentially three tax rates on a shop receipt. It makes for a long bill because after each item, the applicable tax is added, which may, but rarely, be 0.
Several questions here:
1. Why the fck is there a tax on food?
2. A food store is where uncooked food is sold.
3. The Manitoba government employs way too many people.
4.This illustrates why minimalist government if the only sane option.
Looks like the Poor People of Peopletoba are up Schmitt’s Creek with Wab Kinew and no paddle.
No definition of grocery store can be defended when the store is under a tax!
