5. The voters who elect politicians who rationalize shoplifting will be the same voters and politicians that will be enraged when businesses close down in their cities and move elsewhere.    If shoplifting continues to grow without legal consequences, small retailers will close and large department store retailers will move to members only stores for in person shopping or free delivery. The Costco and Amazon prime model. You’ll have to pay an annual fee for the privilege of shopping for food, clothing and other home products.

   1. Essentially, yes. A shoplifting trip with a cart filled with less than $999.00 or similar random value is deemed a misdemeanor. No DA (in a large BLUE city) has time to prosecute misdemeanor crimes (see: every protestor blocking the streets) … so the crimes are never charged or prosecuted.

      Let’s all remember the origin of this public sanctioning of theft. George Floyd.

   Criminal correction/incarceration has a cost to society,so much cheaper if the retailer and customers have to bear it.
