An SDA regular from Ontario corresponds with me regularly. Here’s a little missive he sent from México and gave me permission to share:

We are spending a few weeks in the sun again. By my wife’s count, this our 7th trip to Mexico. Over that thirty-plus years there was always a pronounced Canadian presence at our Mexican vacation spots — and so it is this time as well. But apparently, according to virtually every Canadian we run into, things are very different this year.

We are told that there has been a huge increase in Canadians on the Mayan Riviera this year because, wait for it, “they’re not going to Florida anymore”. This news is invariably delivered with a smug happiness, as “we sure showed him, eh?”

We have heard this dozens of times, and we respond to it with a few quick follow-up questions. “Is this your first time here?” “Oh no, we’ve been coming here for five (or twenty) years”. “So, did you vacation in Florida last year?” “No.” The smarter ones see the contradiction between fact and their narrative and change the subject or, get sour and terminate the conversation. The others try a different tack: asserting that it’s the Quebec traffic that’s waaaay up — at which point I invite them to speculate how much of that might be due to the Quebecois abandonment of Cuba over the past year or so.

A week or so ago, my wife was explaining where our home town was to a poolside Karen who loudly exclaimed – Americans within earshot – that “Any place in Canada is a great place to be.” I told her we had friends in Brampton who would disagree. She has (mercifully) ignored us ever since.

  2. It’s both shocking and sad to realize that being anti-American is such a major part of so many Canadians’ identity.

  5. Indeed, there’s nothing worse than a smug, ill-informed, CBC Canadian.
    Narrow minded, smug, ignorant of the world around them, save for the tunnel vision of propaganda.
    Our last trip to Mexico was January, Cabo, and March, PV, of 2023. It was our first post-Covid trips, as unjabbed vermin. Still not allowed in Bidihn’s US at the time.
    Costs were rock bottom as they were still desperate for tourists. PV was $2100 all-inclusive for a week at an average resort. Worth trip, especially with being prisoners in BC, and Canada, for 3 years.
    Today? Haven’t been back since, though we have a time share trip for 2 wks in PV in June. Airfare there is horrendous, though that’s another story.
    1 week all-inclusive have gone sky high for anything half decent. Starts at $3500, easily going to $5000 a couple for a week. A week, of watered down drinks, questionable food and drunken sots, no thanks. Oh and if you take the risk of going into towns, the restaurant food is expensive and priced for gringos, as are the drinks. Days of a dollar beer and $10 steaks are GONE. Been there, done that. ElBowZ Up bitches. Sorry, but Mexico is not cheap anymore. Dramatically different than 2016.

    Rather be in Hawaii spending 1.40 dollars. Too many reasons to list.

      I am a small c conservative from Northern Ontario who has lived and worked in Ontario, Alberta, and BC for over 40 years. In retirement, I chose the Okanagan.
      I love this country, and all the varied places I’ve lived.
      I have never had the “travel” or “snowbird” thing. I don’t care if some of you do.
      Carry on.
      PS I too have disdain for ill informed CBC elbow people, but I don’t consort with that kind. In fact, me and the wife keep our counsel and abide by Voltaire, who liked his back yard.

          I read your “lengthy” posting, and leared that you are a typical snowbird type.
          You missed my disdain for CBC Elbow goofs. I am not ill informed, but you may lack reading comprehension skills.
          I am the opposite of being a dhimmy with lack of knowledge and ignorance, as you spuriously retorted.
          I would go you on comprehension aptitude, seeing as you missed my point.
          However, enjoy your next junket to some cabana, whilst I enjoy my Okanagan backyard, which was my point. Peace.

      1. Even back in the day. I was in high school in the 70’s in Mississauga. The biggest local developer building these new fangled buildings called “condos” was WIMPEY, or as us high school boys called it – We Import Millions of Pakis Every Year.

      2. More Caribbean type than Singhs, and I know bc I lived there till 2001. There is also a lot of Mooselimbs in Bramptonstan. Cheyeknees, Koreans, and Pohlacks. There used to be a lot of tulip chokers as well, but most of us moved away.

    CAN $1.00 = USD $0.73
    USD $1.00 = PESO 17.25
    CAN $1.00 = PESO 12.61

    Huh? Canadians get more for their limp loonies in MX than in FL. Imagine that?

    100 PESOS ($8.00 CAN) buys you a decent meal, guided tour … and lots more than you can get in Canada. And at least 50% less stuff that dollar could purchase in America. Makes one wonder why ANY Canadian would vacation in America … EVER. There must be far more intangibles than just $$$ that recommend the US as a destination

    PS … the MEX PESO has lost 100% of its value since 1960.

      1. I heartily agree. The last time I went to my wife’s timeshare resort in Cabo (inherited)… a fairly new, respectable place … it was surrounded by chain link fence 12ft tall with razor wire on top. I literally felt like I was staying in a prison. It was my LAST trip to Meh-e-ko.

        Yeah, any island in the Hawaiian chain is worth the premium over a cheap peso (that the natives will try to cheat you out of anyway). Hawaii’s safe … unless you stray into a ‘natives only’ neighborhood like I did once. The woman at the store counter refused to sell me a soft drink. Just stared at me and told me to leave. Nevertheless … Hawaii’s not a prison-resort.

          But there are more beaches, jungles to hike, and rivers to kayak than I can get done on one trip to Kauai

Funny this was posted today, because I was just thinking this morning that in my mind, the “Ugly American” tourist of the 70’s and 80’s, has been replaced by the “Ugly Canadian” tourist with level 11 TDS that wants the world to know what he/she thinks of Trump. We got back from a trip to New Zealand last Friday and though it was a great trip, I cringed and had to brace myself every time I met a fellow Canadian.

      I’ve seen several stupid American tourists in my time on this planet. But they’re more ignorant than “ugly” (nasty). However, some of the Canadians I’ve met, traveling around America & Europe, truly do fit the “ugly” category. They’re consistently Nasty P.O.S.’s who seem to have zero self-awareness and think it’s perfectly fine to sh*t upon the people in the country they’re in. Such insane commentary often comes out of their pieholes long before I reveal that I’m Canadian.

  9. So, in Florida, there has been a trend of less Canadians among the populace as of late. Sadly, the number one driver of that drop off has been exchange rates, more so than politics. The general attitude amongst Floridians has actually been rather positive though, as it has relieved a bit of the housing pressure. Floridians certainly do not morn the loss of those obnoxious, tightfisted fair-weather friends of the elbows up cult, but appreciate renting properties that the generally more America friendly Canadian landlords can’t afford to inhabit this season. It is mutually beneficial, as Floridians enjoy affordable rent which pays the Canadian’s mortgage, and provides hard U.S. currency to Canadians who both need and deserve it. Of course, picking up discount property off of petty, vindictive ‘elbows up’ assholes, desperate to dump those properties in a defiant ‘f*ck you!’ to Americans is the icing on the cake, but sadly it isn’t as prolific as the loudest idiots in the room would have you believe. These are simple truths that get buried under competing political narratives and bluster..

    There is a certain strain of fools running through Canadian society, know-nothings who simply can’t shut up. On and on they go, raging away.

    I don’t know what to do with them, honestly. For the most part I simply tell them that Donald Trump’s second term is the best thing that ever happened to Canada, and then walk away. No point talking to them, it’s like talking to a pig. All squealing and trying to bite.

    1. Drunk, bellowing loudly at the pool of the resort they’re at. The one that started yelling at me in the Dominican Republic (he saw me smirk after some particularly brainless TDS) had no trouble yelling questions at me but was remarkably reluctant to let me get a word in edgewise. I eventually just started making the “yap-yap-yap” hand signals at him, he glared at me and then turned and walked away.

      One guy from 3 chairs down noted “oh, so that’s how to shut him up” and made a toasting motion with his beer.

My usual response to these useful idiots who want to argue their woke positions in public so they can run their mouths: Yeah…I don’t have a horse in that race, so I don’t give a f*ck…then switch the topic. Once in a while it’ll get a chuckle from someone else in the group which identifies those who might be worth time and energy.

  13. the post war generation of ‘mercuns were the smug ‘we saved yer asses so you gotta cater to us yank tourists’ fogetting the fact they the tourists werent the ones that made the sacrifice, AND it was kinda *required* to sign up and go over there.
    soooo now the job of being smug is the Canaduhians? on what grounds? what did THEY (l dont count myself in that lot) DO to ‘deserve’ the smugness?

They say stuff they wouldn’t dare say about a Chinese person about Americans all the while claiming to be so enlightened. It’s so pathetic to witness. Only a few more decades to go!

  14. Fewer Quebecers, in the Rio Grande Valley, and traveling to Florida is welcome news to the locals, and the rest of the Winter Texans and Snowbirds. I can tell you that from wintering in the South for the past 15 years. The best thing about the Trudeau and Carney regime, is seeing Canada in the rear view, when the US Border Patrol Officer, says welcome to the US, enjoy your stay. Sorry Elbow-zoes, but that is the way it, in my experience.

  15. Where to start to comment here or should I even bother since I’d be preaching to the choir! Canadian living standards have dropped off the bottom of the chart since Trudeau II took over this post-national state, remember that line. So if you continued to vote for the Liberals after Carney got in, you are in for a whole lot of pain and you’re taking the rest of us with you. This “Elbows Up!” mantra is just starting to kick in and the clods that back it are going to wish they’d never thought it up. Where are the fruits and vegetables going to come from if we keep this sham going, from China or maybe Europe, how about trans-shipping from Mexico through America, ever think of that? Do you think America is going to supply our gas and diesel needs, almost 1/2 a million barrels a day, when we keep poking them in the eye. I’ve said it before Canada has been a vassal state since before its inception, we cannot defend ourselves, we cannot provide for ourselves and anyone who tells you otherwise is deluded.

It’s so tiresome to listen to. Every single boomer I’ve encountered immediately goes into a fit of rage about how stupid blumpf is meanwhile they have no clue.

    2. I agree with everything you said except being a vasal state from the begining. Maybe I was blessed and had a great history teacher in high school. But I do recall thinking a melting pot beats a tossed salad any day when it comes to a society ,and that was only forty some years ago. Sadly we just pissed it away.

  16. I was happy to see the US women collect the first bucket of Canadian tears on the ice this afternoon, may the men’s team complete the sweep. The more Canada fails, the better I like it.

      But then again, I’ve never been one to follow a pro sports team in anything.

      Don’t understand the whole “we’re the best” while sitting in the stands drinking overpriced weak beer and snarfing expensive hot dogs. What the he!! are you high-fiving and chest-bumping for over someone else’s accomplishments?

      Note: worked off and on in major TV sports production over 14 yrs. Tech directors and producers liked my work because I didn’t care about the action, just the product.
