Perhaps one of the FIRST bands that started shaping my adult musical taste … way back in 1969 … wasn’t The Beatles, or Stones, or even any of my myriad SF Bay Area psychedelic bands. Nope. It was Chicago Transit Authority … who blew me away with their fusion of rock, jazz, blues, R&B, pop, and was truly Prog. Rock in their own way. They set the template for my ear that yearned for layers and layers of intricate instrumentation. Not so much a “wall of sound” as a “Jenga of sound” … pieces of sound all layered delicately and fit together perfectly to make an improbable Tower of sound.
Huh? It’s almost as if someone in Chicago saw CTA in 1969 … and said hey! We can put together a boy band with a lead guitarist wearing a silk scarf around his neck (so edgy) and a horn section and become as successful as CTA.
