      Nobody does. Wherever in the world past high-speed trains have been built, they are all BIG money losers.
      Only the Tokyo-Osaka leg of the Japanese high-speed rail is in the black, and they pack people in like sardines.
      The rest lose over $17Billion a year every year and that’s in Japan, the most successful of the commuter trains.

      Remind me how long they’ve been building one in California? Seems Carney has found a new grift.

      1. But Japan does not have the population density of Eastern Canada, so surely high-speed rail in Maple Leaf Country is more likely to pack ’em in by the thousands!

        BTW, nowhere in North America is public transit profitable.

        1. I suspect public transit is unprofitable for a number of reasons:

          No cost benefit analysis done at inception.
          Overpaying the transit workers.
          Undercharging the users.
          Over regulaton.

    ie, that analytical, ‘common sense’ portion of their brain tasked with ‘figuring things out’, is damaged. doesnt work properly. you explain stuff in a way that has worked for years with everyone else, and you’re ‘talking to a brick wall’. then l hit upon the 5 rules of stupidity, which *explained* why the broad existence of broken brain syndrome.
    emphasis, these idjits are so profoundly dumb, they cant perceive the consequences of their stupidity and just barge thru life like the proverbial bull in a chinashop.
    a still totally unawares. and now we have so many of them ‘in charge’ burning 1,000,000s of acres over the world, killing hundreds, rendering thousands bankrupt and homeless, and STILL they implement their idiocy.
    go figure.

  7. I still do not recall any popular demand for this boondoggie, nor any election about it; in fact it has not been mentioned in any election as far as I can recall.

    1. This is from a conversation I had with an arrogant Ottawa a$$hole who was angry I was against having to pay for this train.

      This boondogle that you so admire will never pay for itself, that is if it ever gets built at 5 times the original estimate. It will always need subsidisation, which means more taxpayer money to run it. It won’t speed up travel because the time to get to the station is not taken into consideration. It won’t be like the old days of just arriving and jumping on. There will be security checks required so one will need to arrive an hour early. By that time a person could have driven from one end to the other before a “highspeed” rail commuter would be halfway to the destination. Then local transportation is required to get to the final destination.

        when ‘rapid transit’ was proposed in my town, l posed the Q, were simulations run 100s of times factoring in:
        -the extra distance, on average, between the rapid transit stops (the whole notion those vehicles whatever form they take have fewer stops) thus
        -the extra time needed for fare paying passengers to *get* ie mostly WALK, to the now, on average, further stops?
        plus transfer times onto the ‘normal’ buses to their final destination that, however ‘on average’ were not on the rapid transit route.
        aaaaaand finally the overall, grand sum total, on average, time ‘saved’ projected over years into the future, vs the cost to build and maintain?
        again, merely a simulation to consider trying to root out viability of the project before dumping 60 million into it.

    2. It’s been studied since the 1970s when the Turbine Train, with a top speed of 270kph, but usually ran at 150kph, was running between Toronto and Montreal.

      Every couple of years, the bad idea returns, usually when SNC Lavellin needs an injection of money.

      ( the biggest reason it never reached it’s top speed: ~240 Grade crossings on those tracks)
