Indigenous wisdom was on display after the 2004 9.3 earthquake and resulting tsunami off the coast of Indonesia. More then 228 thousand people were reported swept away in tsunami waves. The US and the USGS came in for considerable criticism for failing to warn the 14 effected Pacific nations in time to prevent the trenendous death toll. Meantime, the indigenous population who have inhabited the 14 nations (many in the Ring of Fire) for millennia, apparently stood on the beach watching the retreat of the ocean and failed to recognize the danger and/or recollect the song or epic poem that told of previous like events and how the ancestors survived. In short, an indigenous wisdom failure.
