There has been no mention of conscription in Canada, and the 300,000 number is comprised of perhaps some undertrained reservists and citizen reservists. And government run, which we know will be a disaster.

Well Mr Zinchuk, as one who joined cadets about 57 years ago or so, many thanks to you and the missus for stepping up and contributing to the character development of young people who sometimes have poor role models. My cadet experiences may have influenced my decision to join the CAF and rise to a rank far beyond my wildest dreams. Just know that you two have had a positive impact on some kids that you’ll never know about. Thank you.
Our grandson was thinking of joining the military as he had a friend who joined and was extolling the virtues of military service….from a Private’s point of view. I had chat with him and while not telling him not to join, I pointed out the pitfalls of military service. I also asked if he wanted to risk life and limb for people who are adamantly opposed to the Albertan way of life. Anyway, he’s now a 3rd year apprentice well on his way to a Red Seal in an in-demand occupation. He’ll be OK.
I too was in air cadets. My older brother was in the RCAF….I was absolutely going to join when I got old enough but something happened….and that something was many years of Liberal governments including the most damaging, that of Pierre Trudeau. I especially hated Paul Hellyer who was the Liberal defense minister who shut down the Golden Hawks aerobatic team. The die was cast that the Canadian military was being neutered.

None of what I have to say of the Canadian military is meant to reflect badly on those who signed up to serve, but what the Gov’t of Canada has done to them for generations is worth keeping in mind prior to signing, and perhaps to let those considering this know how poorly our federal gov’t has treated them.
I’m not against signing up to fight for one’s country, but there are none in my family who would sign up to fight for tier 2 Canada, and none accept that what the Gov’t of Canada has done to the military here is acceptable. Those (1989-2024?) years of 1.2%-1.4% of GDP for the military and 10% of that being spent on equipment while it was supposed to be a minimum of 2% of GDP and 20% for equipment are not going away.
There hasn’t been a single idea the federal government has espoused that I’ve agreed with in more than a decade, and previous to that when the Harper Conservatives were in power, what they did was simply move back or cancel “some” of the rules which should never have been in place anyways. Why would we fight to defend this? Those serving in other areas of gov’t are rewarded golden pensions for a few hours of actual work and all to enforce made up laws to limit our freedoms. What a garbage dump of people we are ruled by!
Ruled by kleptocrats who keep secrets, who never give direct answers in parliament, who slaughter 100’s of ostriches because they say this is the way it is, who mandate bogus vaccinations to travel and discuss not allowing citizens to buy groceries, who grow rich while driving up the country’s debt, debasing the currency and giving $billions to corrupt countries like Ukraine.
It is more that my country no longer means freedom to me, and it’s more of a repressive state than anything I knew while growing up. There’s a better chance of finding people who would sign up for freedoms we once thought sacred, but those freedoms no longer exist in Canada, and nothing in Canada’s governance indicates a return to us having those freedoms here again.
In the future if we have to fight for a separate Alberta, that chance of signing up increases exponentially, and the greatest enemy of Alberta and our western ideals has been our garbage federal government.

My objection remains notwithstanding your unique circumstance. Although it does seem wise that people capable of contributing despite certain health reasons can find a place in the armed forces, it should and likely would be the exception.
If it comes to actual war, I doubt that conscription would make much of a difference. You need modern weapons and the production infrastructure that goes along with that to give yourself any hope of victory. Canada hasn’t had that since Trudeau The Elder gutted the military in the 1970s. A few governments since then have tried to fill in the holes, but it’s never been enough and most voters don’t care. They just want the state to fix their teeth.
Short answer, I would take a bullet for Alberta, but not for Chinese run Canada.

Funny. My brother was the CO of a recruiting center in Canada years ago. The language requirements are a joke….to be considered fluent in both is out of balance. If a Franco can say “yes” in English, they are fluent in English…..if an Anglo can’t recite long prose in French, they aren’t.
My brother and his compatriots were ordered to Ottawa for a meeting of all recruiting center CO’s. During that meeting, they were told that the entrance tests for Francos into trades in the military were the same as for the Anglos, but the pass mark for the Francos was lower. When asked why, the answer simply was “cultural differences….that’s all you need to know”.
He was stationed in many places including NATO bases, Newfoundland, Moose Jaw, and DND HQ in Ottawa. He said the number of Franco officers that appeared there in a very short period of time was amazing and it resulted in a huge oversupply of commissioned officers.
After basic, Francos were sent on language training in St-Jean if they didn’t meet minimum profiles in English. No such requirement for anglos. Probably because most of the trades training was English-only, with “french assist” (meaning they would find a franco person to translate if in dire need.) The situation somewhat better now, you can get basic trades training in French now, but after that, it’s still “french assist” only. Go on, check if Barker College (advanced courses for Air Force Officers) offer a French serial. Or Staff College. Or pilot training. An anglo officer need not worry about his French profile until he’s lined up to be a Major or LCol. Then they go on language training (often part time during work hours), get a minimum french profile, pass the test and never have to utter an french word again in their career, unless they want to make Colonel. For that rank level and above, they have to maintain proficiency. “.. if an Anglo can’t recite long prose in French, they aren’t” and I call B.S. on that one. You also want to check the ratio of Franco/Anglo officer, which is pretty much the same as the intake at recruit level. You might want to check how many Franco units there are in the CF versus Anglo too.

The military had to ramp up the inclusion of francophones in the military (Canada’s early version of DEI) and the standards were much lower form francophones. When I asked my brother what Majors do in the DNDHQ in Ottawa, he said they made coffee and walked around briskly carrying their look busy kits.

Even if they do, the government has neglected arming the military so badly that they haven’t got the equipment to supply or train them and what they do is in need of an upgrade or they decided to donate it to Ukraine.

War is the health of the state. We are in WW3 now. The war with China hasn’t turned kinetic yet and hopefully won’t as it could turn nuclear. Conscription….that’s amusing. History has shown that the coddled francophone portion of Canada did not agree with conscription but then when the heat was off there was a huge push to get francophones into the military at the expense of the English speaking. Francophones were given the same trade entry tests that the English applicants were given, but their “pass marks” were deliberately lowered so more of them could get in over their more qualified English counterparts…..for “cultural difference”, doncha know?
What are the odds that if conscription was put in effect would Quebec suddenly find enough support for separation?
They would have to decide between the equalization payments or not being conscripted.
Brian, I’m glad you posted this. My brother-in-law was in the military for 22 years. His father was in the military. His brother was in the military. His sister is still in the military. His son is in the military (just made officer). And now his grand-son just joined last week.

I was a Sigs officer, then an infantry officer. I did my time and went into engineering on the civie side.

Seeing the changes in the military I once loved, I’ve told my 2 sons to sit this one out.
I have no trust whatsoever in this government to do anything right.

The Miracle at Dunkirk preserved the lives of thousands to ensure that there would be some resistance to the worst scum to walk the earth. They fought on, against terrible odds while America slumbered.

For some different takes on what may be happening, try, Matt Ehret (Canadian Patriot), Burning Bright at Badlands, or Tom Luongo for a start. It surprises me that after all of these years, so many of the great contributors here at SDA, still use Fox, CNN or CTV as an actual source of news, rather than a decimator of carefully crafted narratives on what they want us to believe.
The other posters have got my sentiments covered. I do worry about marxist blarney trying to draft my son as part of some ridiculous scheme to fight against Russia. I also worry that the canuckistanian military along with some mercenaries being brought in to quell Alberta independence. The convoy put down was just a taste.

Chill. The 300,000 they keep talking about are Supplemental Reservist. i.e. a name on a list with no real training.
To give you an understanding the Reserves in the CAF are two groups;
Primary Reservist – the ones that get paid and can work in class A (part time), class B (full time) or class C (full time with all regular force benefits and pay)
Supplemental Reservist – member of the reserves who are unable to meet class A PRes employment but don’t want to release. Unable to show up once every 28 day. Members on Supplement lists do not have uniforms (must return it before going supplemental), get paid, or have time in Supplement status count as pension time. Normally granted to a member of the reserves who is employed or going to school far from any reserve unit.
This is a paper tiger the government is creating to make it look like we have a larger CAF
If brought up to PRes standing, members would still need to do basic training and trade training and meet fitness and medical standards

Of all the critics, which is pretty much everyone who commented, how many of them have a commissioning scroll on their wall? Who signed on the dotted line? A few did, most did not. Keyboard warriors aplenty, but few who actually wore the uniform. Say what one might about the limited service I was able to provide, I did indeed serve in (then) Her Majesty’s Royal Canadian Air Force.
That’s not nothing.
