Circling The Drain

Voters want lots of free stuff, so maybe those things will just pay for themselves, right? Unfortunately, I don’t know of a political party with currently elected members which would make a serious dent in any of that spending.

For the 2025-2026 fiscal year, Desjardins is projecting a $70-billion deficit, although the report acknowledges some estimates from other sources have been as high as $100 billion.

“There is a lot to unpack in the run-up to what will be a truly unprecedented federal budget,” said the report. “Deficits could rise to levels not seen in decades outside of a recession or pandemic, and the debt-to-GDP ratio is likely to be headed in the wrong direction.”

  1. The Liberals, along with the NDP, will do what always do.

They will borrow the money to wipe out the debt.

  2. “I don’t know of a political party with currently elected members which would make a serious dent in any of that spending.”

    Me either.

  3. So tell me who is getting all these freebies? I certainly am not seeing them. I stopped getting the child tax benefit when that got reformed. I paid a lot more into CPP than I will ever get out of it. I’m too rich to qualify for the vaunted dental program. My own kids went to private not public school. I even made them their lunches at home. I am still paying taxes on everything, GST, PST, gas tax, my CPP and OAS are taxable and so is my pension. So who exactly is it getting all these freebies I have been paying for all my life?

    1. I think it’s the illiterate refugees who show up with 8 kids and immediately start collecting $5,000 per month Child Tax Benefit with no intention of ever working. When they run out of kids they will go home.

      1. You are assuming that they stick around, once they are on it, do they have to remain here, or just go home and send the money there?

    2. “So who exactly is it getting all these freebies I have been paying for all my life?”

I know someone who is about the same age as me who hasn’t worked in 30 years and brings home $125 more per month than I do with my OAS and CPP.

The secret? Get yourself on a disability pension as early as you can and when you reach retirement age, you’re eligible for the guaranteed income supplement.

      I’m getting a T-shirt printed:

      F’kn Idiot
      Worked all my life.

  4. Some chatter on X/Twitter that the Bloc in Quebec hasn’t yet seen the federal budget, yet will vote against it.
The Conservatives will vote against this, but I don’t know how the NDP are actually polling so I can’t guess how they’re going to vote, nor do I expect they’ve learned anything from the previous election so the chance of them voting for what would be the greatest deficit ever if not for the non budget covid years when they all just spent like idiots without a care in the world or to the future…

338 dot calm is saying there hasn’t been a major change since the election, but the NDP may follow internal polls more than publicly available polls, as well, I doubt they’ve made a dent in their general funding problem this year.

If the federal #Libranos say the deficit will be $70 Billion, I expect it’ll end up at $100 Billion, if they say the deficit will be $100 Billion, I expect it’ll end up at +$130 Billion, because I’ve seen their counting skills before. Also, $ X Billions for EV and battery factories, and nada to show for it, some folks saying most of tier 2 Canada’s auto industry will have moved south within a year.

Separation is the way forward for the west, I can’t be convinced of a case for this country’s future. Sure it could change in a couple of years, but seeing the legislation the #Libranos have tabled this year convinces me of their malfeasance being compounded.

    1. Talk too of the #Libranos reducing federal OAS …. as a part time accelerationist I actually hope they do, the seniors out east who voted for these imbeciles seem impervious to thought and funding their existence seems like a waste.

      1. Doubtful they would remove OAS, rather, have a means test, or lower the threshold of means testing.
Its a possible hand grenade issue, though knowing Liberals, they would deny any knowledge, but would introduce it shortly after an election of course.
The NDP stands a chance, a small chance, of getting voters back from the Libs, if they tarnish Carney as a right winger, since he’s threatened cuts at the PO and the Civil service. The DIps cant do worse than they did with Meethead, can they?

        1. Oh I think it’s lunacy to reduce the pension amount or introduce a means test. It was mentioned they may reduce the threshold at which it gets taxed back, whereas I think it shouldn’t be taxed at all (nor server tips as well)

I don’t know how bad of decisions the NDP needs make to not gain votes back from the #Libranos, perhaps by talking about how well Brookfield is doing, and their oil pipeline investments in the USA?
There “should be” a chance to win back voters to the NDP, as recent as the Meathead is in memory, though The Turd™️ should be a recent memory too. Those autoworker jobs disappearing don’t seem to have impacted either of the left of centre parties yet…

Grumps below this comment, and me in my initial comment here, mention how broke the NDP is, and Grumps mentions policy, something the NDP used to pride themselves with.
Not very much of Canadian federal politics is making sense to me in this past year. Canada is on the ropes, and the party which led to this is still polling in first place.

“Circling the drain” as Dennis said in the heading…

    2. NDP is in no position, policy or financially, to get into an election. They will cut a deal with Lib to get party status or equivalent benefits.

Maybe Side-Show Carney will see this as an opportunity to wipe them out, but I don’t think he’s looking that far ahead.

  5. It’s tough to get simple historic deficit numbers for Canada. Many of the numbers end in 2015 (the end of the Harper era). It was Trudeau who generated the largest deficit ever (but it’s attributed to covid and not Justin). The send largest deficit would be from Pierre’s administration (but those numbers are often expressed in percent of GDP). And now Carney. Part of the problem is Canadians do not understand the harm of deficit spending – borrowing money. It’s too late to explain it to them. Now, Carney is set to split the budget into operating and capital investment. This will make it impossible to figure out what the real deficit is. But we’re still in the top 30 best countries to live in (27th), down a little from number 2.

  6. $70 billion?
Is that in $US or the Snow Peso.?
Whatever number our Parasitic Overload comes up with, know this.
    They are lying.

If we ever get some patriots into control of government, then we might finally get the real numbers.
Which will be so much worse than the most pessimistic of us ever suspected.

However as that will never happen in this collapsing kleptocracy,we must separate our affairs from these spendthrifts and fools.
And invert our taxation system,so that this despicable treasonous means of stealing cannot be used on us ever again.

Tax locally and limit tax to less than 10%.Let local government remit 10% or less to the Province..
And The province can pay the Federal clown only for the services provided, which would be a negative number today.

If it exceeds 10%,then every politician must resign.
    Or hang.
This will limit the greed and stupidity that has brought down country, empire and civilizations.
    Over and over again.

    Dear Leaders are evil.
Government is useful but prone to consume all wealth.
Fire is good, until you burn yourself .
WEXIT,but do not repeat the idiocy that brought Canada down.
