    1. Clearly, there are economic issues confronting the Russian government – this is after all a major military conflict and it is using a lot of human and economic resources. However, what struck me, during recent visits, was the amount of civilian infrastructure being built. A large superhighway is being built across the country and will eventually run all the way to the Far East. Major parts of this are toll roads, owned by the private sector. In the rural countryside of central Russia around Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod rural roads are being straightened and doubled. In Moscow, an enormous amount of new housing has been built recently to replace aging Soviet buildings. Across from the Kremlin a huge new commercial center is being built. And, after more than 850 years of existence, Moscow is getting at least two more bridges across the Moscow River. All this while the Russian government maintains debt levels that are a fraction of those in the West.

  27. BTW Robert … as a new 16yo … I was giddy with excitement to get my FIRST drivers license and beat up VW bug (I wanted a Triumph TR-7) in 1972. When the roads were only clogged for about an hour, and then just in a few spots during morning rush hour. Other than that, the only obstacle I looked out for were deer jumping out of the suburban bushes. And that’s in CALIFORNIA!
