    1. I think people should read “1984” in which there are 3 world powers (I am thinking the United States, Russia and China). There is always a war going on between 2 of them at any time AND the protagonists can change at any time. A memorable line when the switch happens is “We have always been at war with EurAsia.” Then the switch happens and it becomes “We have always been at war with Asia”. It was very prescient of George Orwell when he wrote the book in 1948.

  2. According to an email from the PP campaign, there is a leaked document (from some org that employs Mrs Carney and G Butts) that says:
    “Everyone understands they’ll have to accept Trump’s terms eventually, the only question is whether capitulation comes before or after a costly fight”
    “However, I expect Ottawa will quietly fold shortly after the vote to ensure that ongoing relations with the US remain functional”

    This explains quite well why Trump seems positive to have Carney as PM.

      That’s the reality of the situation, like it or not.

      My guess would be the same as above: after the election but before any serious, irreparable damage can be done. They will exploit this to win votes from gullible people, sure…but they’re not insane enough to think they could actually win in a trade war with the USA.

      1. I would argue there are 2 answers. It will be tough to fight Trump and America, I agree. But Canada needs to diversify its economy and trade more heavily with Japan, Germany and other strong economies.

          Trudeau senior tried to pull that off 50 years ago or so (being a hardcore America-hater). Didn’t work out well.

          Yes, diversity in trade is a good thing…Canada and the USA are indeed each other’s largest trading partners, but the difference is that we do 75% of our trade with them and they do 17% of their trade with us. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out which country would win any trade war even without considering the relative sizes and economic clout of our respective nations (our economy being roughly that of California).

          The biggest problem with diversification is the inescapable fact of proximity. We share a 5500 mile long border with the Americans and not with the Europeans or the Japanese, who are on the other side of vast oceans.

    Barney Fife is truly running this campaign’s messaging. Poilievre is actually doubling down on his proposal for idiotic life sentencing for drug merchants. Glad this guy will lose just hope the Liberals don’t get a majority.

    One of the things I am most grateful for is that I am not a conservative because conservatives are too stupid and incompetent to do anything but blame their failures on the scapegoat d’jour. The good news is that between the disintegration of the BC Conservatives and Nenshi probably beating Smith and this disaster, conservatism is coming to a relatively clean terminus in Canada in contrast to America, where it’s final act is to end America’s status as a superpower.

    The word ‘conservative’ denotes someone who thinks bad social media moderation is ‘repression’ but plains clothes government agents nabbing people off the street isn’t. Again, grateful not to be one of those dumb scumbags.

  17. So…the liberals put through legislation to postpone a fixed date election because Election Day would conflict with a cultural holiday that is not an official holiday in Canada.

    Now, they have called an election and the advance polling is occurring on Good Friday through Easter Monday. One day which is an actual official federal holiday in Canada.

    Why are the NDP and Liberals not upset that all advance polling days are occurring at the same time as a major Christian religious celebration?

      It’s beginning to look like Trump DID BLINK! If this story is true, then Trump may be compromised.
      That would explain a lot, and why Trump would want Carney to win the election. At first, I thought it was because Trump preferred to negotiate with Carney rather than PP, but in light of reading this article, it’s MUCH WORSE than that.
      Recall that Trish Wood was once a Trump ally. There seems to be many former allies flipping on Trump. I’m going to try hard not to become one of them, but that will be very difficult in light of this new information.

      1. That’s a hell of a good story, all right, and the whiff of bullshit that surrounds it makes it the more tantalising. It seems absurd and yet it could be true.

        Now, if it’s true, the conclusion I would draw is that Mark Carney’s days are numbered. I don’t see how he tries to shake down Trump and walks away. If something awful happens to Carney in the next week, I’ll conclude that this story is legit. The longer he walks around breathing, the less likely the story gets.
