A thread documenting some of the damage.

15 min. cities? You have 15 min. to live. If you’re lucky.
President Trump was asked about the earthquake today at his news conference and responded by saying he’d already spoken to authorities in Myanmar and extended aid to them. I think there’s an aircraft carrier in the area already…
Tofu anyone?
Lets hire those freaking awesome engineers !
No neef to transfer certificates
Clearly the earthquake was an inside job. We have been told for decades that buildings fall to the side not on top themselves. I bet there was no Ioooos in the building.
Climate Change®. Obviously, it was due to Climate Change®. And it’s all Musk’s fault. He must shut down DOGE now or entire cities will begin collapsing from Climate Change®. Now, if we just key one more Tesla…**
It’s not clear to me from the links how many were injured or killed. I hope the number is very low. That was a pretty serious shaking.

**If that made absolutely no sense to you then you clearly are not a Lieberal or a Dimocrat.
Burmese military said 1,003 but likely to rise as rescue efforts continue.
Yeah, MikeT. My hopes for a light body count are out the window.
The most recent number I’ve seen is 1,644 and rising. That’s pretty rough on the survivors who lost loved ones.
Globull Warmening…
Gotta ask the question.
How is it that that building came down seemingly so easily, when other skyscrapers withstood the shock and stayed up?
Tofu dreg construction. They call it “rebar” but it is actually fiberglass.
If they have an earthquake like that in China literally thousands and thousands of new building will come down. But no one will die, because everybody knows not to live in them.
I figured it was something like that. Obviously, either the building codes aren’t very stringent in Thailand, or the developer was trying to implement short-cuts outside the law.
Might be a share of both #1 and #2.
I have watched these videos and pray for the people living in the apartments (they cannot ALL be at work when this happened). Very scary stuff. But I do wonder about the building codes. I know that Japan has some of the most stringent building codes with respect to being earthquake resistant because of their location (and this is going back to the 1930’s!). I understand (and correct me if I am wrong) that even California has adopted the building codes of Japan with respect to construction being earthquake resistant.
Building codes and their accompanying inspections may well be a factor in the collapse of some of these office and apartment towers. Building codes are at best the minimum requirements instituted and advised by engineers the same engineers that design these edifices are all human as are the construction workers that assemble them. After a seismic shock of this magnitude the question will be how/why will these buildings be dealt with?
Our building codes are constantly evolving (read: getting more cumbersome and strict) and update every 3-years. Here in CA we are still operating on the 2022 codes, however we will adopt the 2025 codes by mid year.
The seismic design requirements are extensive. And yeah … the “ring of fire” is the bright RED zone where seismic design features are most stringent. We’ve had BIG earthquakes recently enough to test all our high rise buildings which have all survived quite well. It’s primarily the older buildings which are most susceptible … and they’ve mostly all been retrofitted over the past 50 years.
