In 2011, the United States experienced more than 500 deaths and over $30 billion in losses from tornadoes. As is now common, climate activists were quick to claim that the destructive tornadoes that year were due to climate change. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) rejected such claims, advising: [A]pplying a scientific process is essential if one is to overcome the lack of rigor inherent in attribution claims that are all too often based on mere coincidental associations.
The 2011 tornado season motivated us — Kevin Simmons, Daniel Sutter and I — to take a close look at trends in tornadoes and their impacts across the United States. The result was a peer-reviewed paper with the first comprehensive normalization of U.S. tornado losses, for 1950 to 2011.
Our results surprised even us — U.S. tornado damage and tornado incidence appeared to have decreased dramatically, contrary to conventional wisdom…

That’s a keeper! Out of curiosity was the value of damage corrected for inflation, for each year? In other words, is the damage stated for 2011 actually in 2023 dollars?
Similar findings for hurricanes – with a solid theory of why hurricanes intensify so quickly. Spoiler alert, it’s not increasing intensity of CO2.

Good analysis by Pielke. However the global warming cult is immune to anything contradicting their narrative.
They are the Borg.
Agreed. It’s remarkable how some can supposedly claim to be well educated and so utterly blind to the obvious. And all this in a field in which they claim to be experts.
Hmmm … Borg, Borgs, yeah, sounds appropriate.
Got to remember that and use it over and over again.
Very good characterization of the “global warming” scammers
Global Warming … caused by humans burning fossil fuels is the greatest (read: worst) HOAX ever perpetrated on the human race.
Banish the Sun! Problem solved!
steve h: “Banish the Sun!”
And while they are at it, they can pass a law that pi equals 3. Nobody knows what to do with those numbers after the decimal anyway.
That’s exactly 90% of our problem. We can now measure things to 23 decimal places … and pretend we can do the same for historic temperatures … so we play statistics ju jitsu and come up with the conclusion that fossil fuels are killing the planet. Utter decimal point rubbish.
‘Fossil fuels’ are actually the greatest hoax. Can we just call it petroleum (rock oil)?
I still can’t understand why any Canadian would be against ‘Global Warming®’. That’s just plain nuckin’ futz given Canada’s climate.
Oh, wait… There are the die-hard snowmobilers and ice fishermen. They would probably grumble about it.
Here. Allow me to show you how this works:
From the period of 1950 to 2011, the frequency of tornado activity has dropped significantly. THIS is a direct result of climate change. As the global temperatures rise, so too does the possibility of drought. As there is less moisture available to form supercell storms, so too does the frequency of tornado activity lower.
Or:
From the period of 1950 to 2011, the frequency of tornado activity has increased sharply. THIS is a direct result of climate change. As the global temperatures rise, so too does the possibility of storms. As there is increased moisture due to frequent storms, supercell storms also increase in frequency, thus increasing the potential for tornadoes.
Rinse Lather Repeat depending upon what you require.
Or
Tornadoes and Severe Storms are formed when Warm Air Masses meet cold air masses. Thanks to Global Warming, there are fewer cold air masses to trigger storms.
Conventional “wisdom”…..leftist lexicon for propaganda. See also, “consensus”.
A few weeks back we had a heat wave.. Hurricanes pushing warm air up into Canada.. Standing in a full sun parking lot next to a brick wall.. Dude this is global warming?.. It is real 🙂
A few days later the temp returns to normal but his politics never will.. Like finding Mother Mary at the bottom of your soup bowl.. People see, people find what they are looking for..
‘And don’t forget actor Leonardo DiCaprio’s comments upon experiencing a Chinook: “I’ve never experienced something so first-hand that was so dramatic. You see the fragility of nature and how easily things can be completely transformed with just a few degrees difference. It’s terrifying, and it’s what people are talking about all over the world. And it’s simply just going to get worse,” said DiCaprio.
“We were in Calgary and the locals were saying, ‘This has never happened in our province ever.’ We would come and there would be eight feet of snow, and then all of a sudden a warm gust of wind would come.”‘
I can guarantee he was not speaking to any locals, but to his crew who hailed from Vancouver and had no idea what a Chinook was, let alone having ever experienced one. Needless to say, Mr DiCaprio was mercilessly mocked for his over-the-top climate hysteria.
Local indigenous people told him that as a prank, tongue in cheek.
One of the most egregious practices concerning climate is to take a temporary anomaly and declare it part of some giant trend. This is not only done by the average Joe, but meterologists and the media who are supposed to hold themselves to a higher standard.
Agreed, KM. It’s actually a standard technique of any collection of cultists and conspiracy theorists.
We have basically had a Tornado drought over most of the last decade. The storm chasers know and will tell you this. Facts don’t matter , the alarmists tell a story and it is taken as fact.
Global BC’s Weather guru, Christie Gordon…MMMM mmmm! I could mute the TV and watch her for hours…
😉
Didn’t we also have a Hurricane drought a few years after Katrina?
Yes Florida did: “With all eyes on Erika in the Atlantic, the natural question is whether it will end Florida’s nearly 10-year-long streak with no hurricane landfalls.” – October 2015

I had a sunburn this summer. It hurt. It’s not my fault, its yours.
Its the whole victim schtick, writ large.
