What Would We Do Without Researchers?

“Explain it to me like I’m 5”.

Two new Studies are underway at the University of Saskatchewan looking at a variety of factors that impact long-haul truck drivers in the province. One study is evaluating what benefits driving simulator training can offer truck drivers in Saskatchewan, and the second is looking to evaluate the amenities available at truck stops. PhD candidate Mackenzie McKeown is leading the studies. She joins Gormley to discuss the safety concerns she has about the current state of the trucking industry and how she hopes her studies will help create a better work environment for Saskatchewan Truckers.

If you can make it to the end, you’re a better person than I.

  1. I earned my PhD studying the effect of discarded cigarette butts on beach sand. Since that six year period of intensive research I have been able to secure a post-doctoral position at a leading university continuing my research and its effect on climate change. It seems relevant to this study for some reason but I’m not quick to draw conclusions.

You should apply to the Turd for a grant to study the effects of cigarette butts on climate change.

  2. Amenities at truck stops? Seriously, like no truck stop operator has ever thought of doing something that brings in customers!

  3. Ummmmm, how about we hire truckers who don’t cook on a campfire in the cab and don’t crap out of a hole in the sleeper…..just saying. Maybe that’s a good place to start??

Somehow, just somehow, I suspect that if we address those two points the safety record will improve, almost as if by magic.

    1. crapping out a hole in the sleeper may or may not be an improvement over the kitty litter box that some trucks have….

  4. There must be real problems in these facilities regarding gender and directional regulations governing glory holes.
There are no rules regarding equity for gender transitioning drivers as they pass from the 14hr. driving window to the 10hr. sex work / rest window. The current available training program is clearly dated and misogynistic

Perhaps Ms. Makenzie who just puts her # and email right out there… restroom stalls etc. can use hard earned tax dollars to “rectify” these issues.

I’m noticing our resident gear shifter has yet to comment on what is clearly “xyr” (?) only area of expertise.

  5. Truckers ain’t got it tough.
Try motorcycles, sleeping outside under the stars, taking a crap in the tall grasses.
You know, like a happy dog in the breeze, living la vida loca.
    PhD’s wasted the best years…

  6. Want me back in a truck?
    – Home every 2nd night.
    – The night that I am not home, nice hotel room paid for by the company.
    – Meals paid for in restaurants by the company.
    – Good pay and full benefits.
    – Modern well maintained equipment.
A lot of this was common, until deregulation in 1980.

  7. Why bother? All trucks after 2035 will be Autonomous, self driving, electric vehicles with solar panel trailers!

  8. The output of this research will self identify with the pronoun Road Kill. Someone should write a diary.
