A Columbia University study has found that teens who use cannabis recreationally are two to four times as likely to develop psychiatric disorders, such as depression and suicidality, than teens who don’t use cannabis at all.
The research, published in JAMA Open Network May 3, also finds that casual cannabis use puts teens at risk for problem behaviors, including poor grades, truancy, and trouble with the law, which can have long-term negative consequences that may keep youth from developing their full potential in adulthood.
“Perceptions exist among youth, parents, and educators that casual cannabis use is benign,” said Ryan Sultan, MD, assistant professor of clinical psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia and lead study author. “We were surprised to see that cannabis use had such strong associations to adverse mental health and life outcomes for teens who did not meet the criteria for having a substance use condition.”

So then they will offer them MAID for being depressed.
They think of everything.
Yah, Butt the bullshitters in here think of nothing. Is MJ a driver or a resultant effect?
It’s like boob enhancement, those who get them are 3 times as likely to commit suicide as those who don’t. But it’s not the boob job that causes the problem, it’s the personality type that is more prone to committing suicide , is also more likely to get boob jobs.
Try context for just once in effing here!!!!!
You make a good point. People with mental health issues are more likely to use cannabis. So what do we do? We make it legal.
That’s not true. Kids use it for the same reason their friends do – group belonging, experimentation, etc. The disruption of brain chemistry is a consequence.
Legalize Pot!!! It is perfectly harmless!
Please! Won’t you think of all those tax revenues?!
Look at it this way?: Cannabis is no more dangerous than gender affirmation treatments.
Affirming a mental illness does not correlate with a plant that is known to have medical benefits for thousands of years. If you can show me how gender affirmation helps with chronic pain, colitis, chemo therapy, inflammation ect. I’d be happy to learn. Here however your ignorance about a plant is showing. And your point is asinine.
There are thousands of medical compounds in cannabis if grown properly. It’s not a cure for anything just a natural remedy. Can you say the same for gender ideology?
I love SDA but sometimes these comments are extremely low fidelity. Smoking some weed has never made anyone consider genital manipulation of themselves. You are comparing a mind virus with a plant to make a moot and ignorant point.

2-4 times is quite a range. Accurate study no doubt
The kids are sitting around playing video games and smoking a bong after school. They light up the bowl about 30 times in the afternoon. Is that ONE time because it’s one session? Or is it 30 times? How many hits = one “time” Does half a joint = half a “time”.
The results of the study are patently obvious … and truthful … but the methodology sloppy.
I’ve lived it. If I could go back and be a hard ass PRISON WARDEN for my one dope smoking child … I would. Too late now … he’s dead. Killed himself. Constant marijuana … from Jr. Hi to his death at 35. Bipolar and schizophrenia diagnosed at 18 yo
Heartbreaking. So sad. That leftist governments support this is a scandal.
All part of unlimited warfare. No aspect of our society left unassailed.
How was a prior link between psychiatric issues influencing likelihood of drug use addressed?
The drug legalization movement is another hangover from the hippie era. We see all the unintended consequences of feminism and the sexual revolution etc. but the drug lore really hasn’t been addressed yet.
We still have people like Joe Rogan pushing drug use as really beneficial in the wake of Ken Kesey types. Hopefully the same thing will happen as did with all the woke stuff and people will start to mature in their views and not just go along with the American bourgeoisie’s manufactured narratives. It’s such a mess and so much damage is being done, I really hope we can extricate ourselves from it soon.
I’m pretty hopeful though, I see a lot of young people now that aren’t interested in drugs or alcohol or the social drama of high school. They are much more in the mold of Jordan Peterson, although they probably don’t really know who he is. The ‘druggie’ kids aren’t the cool ones anymore either. From what I can see the other kids seem very dismissive of them, the reaction seems to be an eyeroll and an underlying assumption that they’re never going to get anywhere in life.
Even in normal life I meet a huge number of people who don’t even drink alcohol anymore, or if they do, drink very little. I’ve been to many BBQ’s and parties recently where the people getting intoxicated were in the very small minority. I think this is a really good sign that aside from all the fake media illusion world, a lot of normal people are getting their lives together and rejecting self destructiveness and getting on with enjoying their friendships and social networks and the positive side of life. I think that in the end this is what the cathedral and it’s acolytes abhor: healthy, happy people that have little use for the state, few problems that need solving, and no reason to take any notice of political ideologues.
What’s that old phrase, only dopes do dope.
vowg
You git it, the problem fools do drugs, drugs don’t cause fools.
GYM,
you’re the reason Adult Abortions should be legal.
Thanks for proving it yet again.

I don’t want to play
I just want to bang on the drum all day

I recall when Harper was hoping the Canadian Medical Association would take a stand on this. They refused. Well, since then It’s become apparent that the corruption at the CMA runs deep. I believe even the Health Canada bureaucrats were refusing to acknowledge marijuana damage to young people. Sickening.
They could have just asked Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong about this.
I like how weed smokers can’t wait to bring it up with literally anybody they come in contact with, and use the excuse “I smoke weed like most people drink beer.” No, you smoke weed like most people smoke cigarettes and the effect it’s had on your brain is blindingly obvious. The number of people I know who can’t function without it is staggering. but it’s not addictive at all.
Another point about THC, it gets stored in your fat. And it’s released when the adrenal glands start pumping. So, you go into a dangerous situation, it’s released and you’re high again. Makes those already prone to thrill seeking especially susceptible. Also means you’re functionally impaired when you’re i n a dangerous situation.
Psychiatrists which from this point of view are akin to witch doctors or witchcraft practitioners had a lack of clients. Too many of those and not enough clients.
So the social scientologists made the politicians to make those things that make people do irrational things, to make those things as easily available as buying a loaf of bread. As if that was not satisfactory, the media cartel, that I think owns a lot of the weed business, have made and are currently making propaganda for consumption of the alternate universe consumables.
And suddenly there are thousand upon thousands of new clients and the witch doctors are laughing all the way to the bank.
The state of the society is of no concern, the witch doctors are going to save the day as long as there is tax cash available.
Reefer madness is alive and kicking.
To say nothing of the cost of said madness.
Half the Boomer raised generations couldn’t find their butt with both hands and a search party, let alone cope with reality.
Cause and effect confusion I’d say.
Looking at the study, this is yet another “guns cause crime” correlation. They tell you right in the beginning: “Question Is nondisordered cannabis use (NDCU) among US adolescents associated with adverse psychosocial events?”
Is cannabis -causing- adverse psychosocial events in teens? This study does not show that, for the same reason that gun studies never show that guns cause crime. Because they ask the questions in such a way that they determine the answer.
This is not a scientific study. It is a propaganda piece printed in the Journal of the American Medical Association, famous for printing propaganda about:
Covid-19
The Vaxx Jab
Hydroxychloroquine
Ivermectin
guns
and lots of other things that were fashionable at the time.
Should you let your teen smoke up all the time? Well, do you let them DRINK all the time? Because that’s the type of harm being discussed here. The kid who’s drunk all the time, not the kid who took a sip of Dad’s beer or went to a field party once.
So no, do not let your kid smoke up. Duh.
Yes, obviously a kid abusing cannabis is going to suffer harm, the same as the ones abusing alcohol, or any other drug. Will it be worse than an adult doing the same thing? We don’t know, because that research has never been done. They spent all the money on propaganda. Because lying liars lie.
Common sense, people. Don’t fall for the BS please, just because they stroked your fur in the right direction this time. They’re still lying.
jeez ,they (us) made alcohol illegal..
did it work??
robbing banks is illegal and dangerous..
does /did that work?
certain people are born adventurous.
and will do anything and shorten their lives.
some fly private ariplenes(very dangerous)
I never used pot and never had a desire to..
I did fly tho..
If anything, that is if this is not the propaganda I believe it to be, the potency of today’s cannabis strains might certainly be an issue. Imagine if all the alcohol being sold suddenly doubled or tripled in strength. However, I still know many full time weed users who have used it for decades and manage to live fulfilling, productive lives. Makes me wonder what other things are going on that may be screwing up the minds and lives of young people. Apparently, 20% of Antifa idiots identify as trans or non binary. Yep, must be the killer weed. That’s got to be it. Oh by the way, is Columbia University school of psychiatry and better than their law school these days? Hmmmm?
I’m trying to imagine all the alcoholic beverages instantly becoming two to three times stronger, and you know? I can imagine that! But now I’m trying to imagine everyone – hell, anyone – insisting on still drinking the same amount. And I just can’t imagine that. Don’t people smoke or drink until they’ve had enough?
