We Don’t Need No Flaming Sparky Cars

We tried to warn them.

Here’s how much electricity prices have surged in parts of New England this winter: For some drivers of electric vehicles and hybrid cars, it’s now more expensive to charge up than to fill up.

Power rates across the region have jumped an average of 30% since last summer, while gasoline prices have receded well below their peak in June of 2022. Web engineer Matt Cain, who lives in Amherst, Massachusetts, said he ran a price comparison when his electricity bill shot up in January and found that his overall costs for utilities had climbed a whopping 50%.

“We have a Prius Prime that we normally drive around town, and we drive most of it on electricity. It’s now 50% more expensive than fueling it with gas,” he told CBS MoneyWatch.

  1. It is simple supply and demand, If the supply is constant and the demand increases, the cost for any good will rise because of increased competitive demand for the product. Economics 101 that even this engineering graduate passed.

    1. it was never about supply and demand, it was always about taking your car, and thus your freedom, away from you. It is painfully obvious that replacing gas with electric in the amounts needed is impossible.

      1. I agree, Matt, but a lot of people don’t understand the process and that economics, for all of its faults, gets this part correct. Just like you and I are the carbon that they are trying to reduce (to 500,000,000 or less).

  2. “It’s now 50% more expensive than fueling it with gas”

But he’s saving the planet. The whole point is to make energy from all sources prohibitively expansive so people quit using it and poor and old people freeze to death.

    1. Walking and biking will warm you up, so there is that, much like the other 3/4 of the Earths population do now, thats your future.
Next , ban all public transit cause 15 minute cities er something.

  3. And…..They blame natural gas/fossil fuel prices in the generating of the electricity…..

Better double down on wind/solar…….It has to work…….someday???

  4. I’m sure when we are all driving EVs the price of electricity will plummet. Right?

    1. Sadly none of the electric stuff can be made without massive inputs of “fossil” fuels. Not the cars, buses , trucks , wind turbines, solar panels, generators, I think that is enough for now. Without “fossil” fuels the world will come to abrupt stop and those so called elites will freeze and starve along with everyone else. They and all others that think EVs of any sort will be practical are delusional. Those fortunate enough to live around the equator will survive.

  5. Tough Titty Said The Shitty Kitty.
And Trudeau the Imbecile wants all EV, even through there is no grid big enough to power them all.
He Needs To Go He Is A Dangerous Fool and take his Bum Boy Singh

    1. Hmmm, we got the EV shite going on, climate change BS to limit food production, Digital ID, total survellence/tracking everywhere ( your phone ) , internet Wrong Think, racist whitey is bad , MAiD, abortion up to delivery and beyond, allowing criminals freedom to do whatever they want with very little punishment , brainwashing the general population from cradle to grave , destruction of the family , bringing in invaders to replace the local population, evil leaders/government , Wars, financial rape of our wallets/assets and alot more vile crap going on beyond the obvious Coof Plandemic/associated fallout (deaths).

When does the average person finally snap ?

  6. There are few things more satisfying in life than seeing a useless, virtue-signalling [spit] Prog soi-boi receive a hard slap of reality upside the head. Unfortunately, the bureaucrats pushing this bullshit still won’t get it, as their pay grade puts them above such lessons.

  7. I watched a tow comparison between a Ram Diesel and a Hummer EV. I think the $68K diesel’s range was roughly 300 mi compared to 120 mi for the $114K EV. The funniest part of the video was when they calculated Energy Efficiency. They said that the EV was something like 2.5x more efficient with KW’s of energy used. What didn’t occur to them IS that the SOURCE of the energy stored in the EV’s battery has a lot of inefficiencies NOT INCLUDED in their flawed analysis. Most coal fired power plants are 40 to 50% efficient (for example). And then there’s significant distribution system losses. So rough math there really isn’t much difference energy efficiency-wise. So what you end up when going with an EV is something that costs almost twice as much, goes less than half as far and has about the same or more energy cost. That’s forgetting about cold weather limitations and the hugely expensive battery that may last only 10 years if you’re lucky and bleeds performance slowly as it ages. Overall EV’s are but a shadow of fossil fuel powered vehicles..

    1. Not to mention your precious time waiting to charge such a contraption.
As a human with a limited useful lifespan to work, live, enjoy life, only so many hours and they are non-replacable.
Time is money, it has value, spent on other more important things in life.

    2. Imagine towing your fifth wheel across country? Drive 120 miles/ 2 hours, then recharge for how many hours? Repeat how many times? 30 or so if you are going NY-San Francisco. It would be faster than a Conestoga wagon across the prairie, but not by much.

  8. “One Massachusetts resident said their power company, National Grid, jacked up local electricity prices to 44 cents per kilowatt-hour — three times the national average.”

I think I see the problem there, Butch. Maybe they shouldn’t have shut down all those “high priced” nuclear plants like Vermont Yankee in favor of cheap natural gas plants a few years ago? Nuclear plants that produced power at 3-5 cents per kWh?

  9. You cannot cure stupid.
Ontario’s experience with “Free wind and solar” as their electrical cost/kW quadrupled,is a recent example..
And the suckers kept right on voting Uni-party.
Prentice being elected after “Redmont”in Alberta ,yup.
Makes me extremely sceptical of that plane crash, what did Jimmy know?
Of course electric cars are going to cost more to “fuel”.
    Basic engineering .
The accumulated losses exceed the benefit..Well except for the graft by the bandits.

Observe the rise of “Wood Pellets”.
A classic tale of theft, scam and gullibility.
Wood pellets came to be,as a way to dispose of the sawdust, waste product of making lumber.
Deemed to be “Carbon Neutral” because they were using a waste product.
    Now?
Logging operations ,go forth harvest standing timber..with all the diesel powered toys you can imagine..
Those trees are ground up,no board feet of lumber harvested, thus no profit to make the waste , waste, ground up using far more energy than sawing..
Then the “product” is compressed, bagged and shipped..
    Again “More diesel”.
Then delivered by specialized truck or by bags using a forklift..
And burning fire wood is being restricted,in some cities..
    So which uses less energy?

    Rhetorical question.
Gang Green Feelz and so the tax payer must subsidize this fad.

Gang Green needs to be banished to special enclaves for these special people.
Where they can demonstrate the worth of their hysterically stupid ideas..using their own monies, their own effort and their own skills..

    A disaster in the making.

However,we now have the empirical data.
If you protect and coddle the useless and clueless?
    You get more..
More useless clueless nitwits trying to live your life for you.

    Look up Coats Island.
    It is perfect.
    Isolated.
    Free of “Fossil fuels” mostly.
“Warming like never before” or so these same persons claim.
Surrounded by water, well ice in winter, and travelled by apex predators .
Banishment to such an paradise to live their demands (for us) is perfect justice for the eco-warrior of Gang Green.

For as often been said;”The modern environment activist will do anything to “save mother earth” Absolutely anything, no matter how evil, illegal or vicious..
    Anything at all.
Except go to school and get an education in those very sciences they “Believe in”.”
    (found on WUWT years ago.)

It takes real skill and mental gymnastics to be so ignorant.
CAGW,now referred to as CC,is an intelligence test.
Or proof that your indoctrination has taken hold.

Consider “The Science” of CAGW..100% wrong for 35 years..Now that takes real skill.
That is not a trivial accomplishment.
    Think about it..
    What are those odds?

    Electric Cars..
I will get one, when the subsidy exceeds my costs..
For every one should have a semi mobile electric chair.
Although some car batteries, jumper cables and water seem to work just as well..
    But.
    Plausible deniability..
Goes with the hogs, backhoe and “I didn’t see nothing”.
How deep do you have to bury a Government issue electric car, before the tracking devises stop working?
And which Progressive Comrades back yard should one bury it in?
With or without that Progressive Comrade?

    Just asking for a friend.

  10. Don’t forget the EV lobby want “free” (to them) public charging stations for EV vehicles. The higher electricity prices go, the louder will be their cry for “free” charging because, of course, they are saving the planet.

  11. Financial and environmental reasons are not in the same hemisphere as to why these guys bought such cars in the first place.

They are paying for their eco-piety.

  12. Wahhhhh … my electric rates went up … wahhhhh …

Dude: try living in PG&E territory … we’re getting BUTT RAPED to pay for all the “green” bullshit, and 50 years of substandard maintenance that sparked deadly wildfires

    https://www.pge.com/en_US/residential/rate-plans/rate-plan-options/electric-vehicle-base-plan/electric-vehicle-base-plan.page

Wanna charge your ecar? a) you better do it between the hours of 12am to 3pm when you pay the “cheap” rate of $0.24/kWh … and you can add a +23% rate increase in early 2023 to that for a cost of $0.30/kWh … and that’s for the hours of 12am – 3pm … recharge your car any other time and you’ll be paying up to $0.55 +23%=$0.68/kWh.

Yes … gasoline cars are cheaper to operate in N.CA … even considering our outrageously high gasoline prices.

  13. Phase 2 is when people start crying for price controls on electricity. The surest way to choke off supply of electricity. Won’t be long before wood burning fireplaces are banned everywhere either.

  14. I am a full supporter of climate change.
A thing you can believe in.
For soon enough the climate will change.
As the bullying, hysteria and naked lust for power of Gang Green become too annoying to ignore, the political climate will change.
These idiots have abused our hospitality and intelligence for far too long.
Now they abuse our patience and tolerance..
They loudly demand , change and that monies must be spent, yet never do they change nor is it ever their monies being spent..
    Parasites and extortionists,one and all.
And that “climate” has already changed..
Gang Green is a toxic disease, the public is heartily sick of them, all that protects them?
Our police, politicians and Courts..The Kleptocracy supports Gang Green.
    Because they are gangrene.

  15. The other day I asked one of the supervisors at ATCO, a guy who trains linemen, how much more infrastructure (high tension power lines, transformers, etc) they’d need to keep the grid running if all vehicles in Alberta switch to electric. He just chuckled and said “I think you know”. So, I pressed a bit: double, triple, ten times as much?

He said “zero”. They’re not putting in any new electrical infrastructure to deal with the expected increased load. They’re being expected to do it with existing infrastructure.

    Madness.
