  1. I hope California, New York and Illinois aren’t involved with pilot licensing in the same way they’ve been involved with CDLs.

  2. It’s always helpful to get some coherent analysis from someone who knows what they’re talking about vs the half-baked drivel coming from someone whose qualifications for journalism school started with: must have flunked calculus.

  3. One thing Steve did not mention is the relationship of angle of attack to airspeed. When an airplane is travelling slower, its nose needs to be higher so that the wing is at a high “angle of attack” and enough lift is created to counter gravity against the airplane’s weight. At higher speeds such as in cruise, the nose is much lower, so the AoA is lower and the high airspeed means that enough lift is still created. This is why the pilot raises the nose as he is landing, called “flaring,” to increase the AoA and stop the descent for soft touchdown. With the accident airplane, the speed was far too high and the pilot could not raise the nose or the thing would have just climbed as its AoA was increased. We call that “ballooning,” and it means that the airplane will run out of airspeed some distance above the ground and then come down real hard and probably break up.

Trying to land with too much speed is a common mistake among lower-time small-airplane pilots. For some, they never figure out why their landings are so bad. Running off the end of the runway is not uncommon.

  4. GYM was beside zimself as the oversized custom dildo he ordered from Amazon was lost in the crash.
