I’m old enough to remember the REAL Columbus debate was whether he was Italian or Portuguese? If they are really committed, they need to also tax the cow farts, not just the burps.
The food market is a global one.
Putting a domestic tax on foods does two things.
1. It impoverishes your farmers because they have to pay the tax while competing internationally with farmers who aren’t taxed.
2. It has its most severe effect on the poor, because the poor have to spend a greater proportion of their income on food.
