I spun this vinyl today … and was sent into a nostalgic spin remembering how San Francisco USED to be. So beautiful, with truly FREE people who loved one-another … “including Indians too” … “San Fran-cis-co” … (cool psychedelic lead guitar melody)
I was in Junior High and walked Haight and Ashbury … buying some BITCHEN black light posters! The streets were clean, the city was BRIGHT and LIGHT colored unlike any other city in America. In fact, when the dark granite skinned Bank of America building went up … it was HATED for being so out of character with the city. Now … the whole city is blacked. The gays took over … the leftists took over … and the shit-covered … homeless-tent covered streets no longer inspire love songs to a city. Derision and mockery are inspired by today’s San Francisco.
It was the San Francisco conservatives who were tolerant, and welcomed kids expressing their search for love and meaning in the world. Welcomed the FREE LOVE hippies. The conservatives could differentiate between youthful indiscretions and exploration from total self destruction. There were guardrails placed on destructive behaviors. Now … the totally intolerant … “tolerant” (of everything anti-civilization) leftists have turned the JEWEL of San Francisco into a pigs snout … no … into a pigs anus.
The leftists who have taken charge of our culture, politics and society are either INSANE, INCOMPETENT, DUMB … or all of the above. Yes, many of these people were actually participant-hippies of The Summer of Love … but most were simply hippie-adjacent wannabes. They have NO BUSINESS being in-charge of more than a leather sandal street booth on Haight Street. No … they couldn’t handle that either.
Yeah, I’m rambling as I’m want to do … but the historic perspective Eric Burden provides is startling. The degeneration of San Francisco … the entire State of CA … and MOST every other formerly GOOD THING in America is quite shocking to this 66yo. People under the age of 50 have NO IDEA what they’ve lost … and what THEY are destroying ever more thoroughly at a frightening clip. It was CONSERVATIVES who welcomed the Flower Children … it is the wokesters who are welcoming the Poison children. The EXTREME whack jobs who are AGAINST everything beautiful. The City is covering a hillside with an illuminated PINK triangle to “celebrate” Vulvar PRIDE or something. I guess that’s what passes for “Love” in San Francisco today … vulgarity on display to all those “straight breeders” driving-by. How sad. Thank you, Eric … for memorializing a moment in time when San Francisco truly was beautiful.
Fentanyl will clean that right up. There will be no one left alive to remember.
“…cops face is filled with hate…” 1968 – 2022

Still the greatest western movie theme ever. That said, I’ll throw this out there: I maintain that the violin/cello accompaniment on this- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1Y-rfbzmgY
is a direct homage to this- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQTH3a0mjR8
I could be convinced that the entire song is an homage to The Big Country theme. Change my mind. 🙂
Elmer Bernstein was one of the most prolific composers of film music in the last 70 years. He also composed the music for another well-known Sturges movie: The Great Escape.
Indeed Jerome Moross’s theme for The Big Country was iconic and was borrowed for other settings. If I’m not mistaken, it was at one time the theme for the Marlboro Man.
BTW, The Big Country is a terrific movie. Charlton Heston took a lesser role in it because he wanted to work with director William Wyler. That gamble paid off as Wyler than cast Heston in Ben-Hur, who won an Oscar as Best Actor.
Elmer Bernstein’s 80’s stuff is what I remember best.
Bruce- That’s the first time I ever listened to that version. Thanks for that.
That is very cool. I did NOT know about “Move” as a precursor to ELO. However, the YouTube video is misleading as “Do Ya” does NOT appear on the “Message From The Country” lp. It only appears on a reissue of that lp in 2005 by Capital Records. It took me a minute to figure that out on Discogs. I was gonna find a copy to buy … but only two cd’s listed for sale on Discogs.
The story is that Jeff Lynne released ELO’s version of the tune … because of the popularity of Todd Rundgren’s version … he wanted the world to know HE wrote the tune … not Rundgren. 1971 wasn’t quite ready for the thein-your-face, loud, and up-tempo “Do Ya”. And 1971 was arguably the single greatest year of music releases in the history of the planet … so this SUPERB song was lost in the huge crop of 1971 music
well kenji cops faces were in fact filled with a lot of hate in 68.

Do Ya is a great road tune, too. On the right interstate, you can make some miles with ELO ridin’ shotgun. If you REALLY want to feel the tunes on an open road, play The Magnificent Seven score back to back with The Big Country score somewhere along the north-middle segment of Nevada hwy 318. And, for a real bonus, ya gotta hear the Rolling Stones version of Like A Rolling Stone while southbound on I-90 somewhere south of Crow Agency MT and north of Sheridan Wyo.
Rampant nihilism. It’s the obvious result of that hopey changey thing that Obama peddled for 8 years.
It’s not nothing – during the 90s the OPP in eastern Ontario investigated the murder of a small time drug dealer and his very pregnant wife in Cumberland – two suspects immediately came to the fore – Merlin McNeil and David Dunbar, both members of the Outlaws MC – the OPP investigation was fraught with ineptitude and mountains of missing evidence – OPP turned to four coke dealers and convicted them – they spent 10 years in prison before being released and declared innocent – OPP promoted everyone involved. To date, that investigation has gone nowhere – McNeil (Wizard) and Dunbar were never prosecuted – that was pretty much the end of the road for Ontario Outlaws.
Now it seems – they’re back with a vengeance – and the OPP is somehow going to clean it all up?
The article doesn’t talk about why it’s happening, only that it is happening. I’d be curious as to what others think about this.
