If the cost of hydroelectricity was the advantage that it is typically claimed to be, Manitoba would have become the manufacturing hub of Canada decades ago. The fact that this never happened has not dissuaded journalists from promoting green energy bromides by focusing on the cost of just one input among thousands.
Setting aside the hoopla, even the allegedly low cost of that input cannot offset a lot of other hurdles without a big infusion of tax dollars:
As both provinces look to woo automakers and battery makers with financial incentives and subsidies, the situation may raise a new quandary for Canada. In their zeal to grab a piece of the burgeoning EV supply chain, will Quebec and Ontario end up competing against one another in a race to the bottom, in which all the purported benefits of industry, from jobs to tax revenue, fly out the window as companies secure lucrative deals?
Quebec will win the lions share and the rest of the country will subsidize. Just off the top of my head.

The electricity part of manufacturing costs is very 1950s. Since then we’ve off-shored most of what we make because humans have always been the highest input cost – now being phased out by automation. There are definitely 3 phases to being rich – getting there, being there, and wishing for the good old days. Canada (and North America) is in transition from phase 2 to phase 3 so it really doesn’t matter what electricity prices are.
But if you want to argue that solar energy is competitive you haven’t bothered checking prices. About 10 years ago a 10 kW solar installation was about $30,000 – $40,000 depending on options (roof-top versus ground-mount etc). Solar energy costs “have dropped by up to 90%” according to the (so-called) experts. Today a 10 kW solar installation is about $35,000 – $42,000 without a battery back-up system (which you need if you want electricity at night). Also, in Ontario the electricity providers have separated electricity use and delivery fees so that no matter how little electricity you use, you still pay a substantial amount for the right to use electricity. This makes solar even less cost-effective. Now if you want to build a giant solar array and have the government pay for it, I’m sure it’s cost effective for the installers, and owners, less so for the tax-payers.

Trying to hook up a power line and pole for the last few miles to the stead can get mighty expensive.
My cottage friend found that out the hard way when he finished his place up in the boonies of Haliburton in the early 80’s.
For the last mile hookup Ontario Hydro wanted over $ 10, 000 plus the cost of the 2 poles and wire, that was when they weren’t busy during the recession.
Cost more than he paid for the land and that was in 1983 Canukiestan dollars.
Hate to see what it costs now in devalued dollars.
The wire alone must cost a fortune.
Solar power in Canada is pure stupidity. It is not cost effective in Arizona and Canada has almost no energy in it’s 7 hours of winter sun and a fraction of Arizona’s in the summer. For 6 months the solar panels need snow removal to produce at 2% of capacity for maybe 5 hours. The fake Alberta Conservatives massively subsidize wind and solar but have barely touched hydro electric which is much closer to economic viability. Even the communist government in BC and former communist government of Manitoba appreciate hydro.
Wind is generally equally retarded. I’ve read the solar makes no sense at all outside the equatorial region, and even then the economics aren’t great!
Solar is OK off the grid for non thermal devices (low amperage) such as lights, electronics, and fans that can draw on battery power and an inverter.
Solar is great,if you like having power when you least need it.Middle of Day.
Every single cabin dweller I know,has learnt the rules of Wind and solar,you adjust your plans to suit power availability.
No more start up the appliance and do the job,now its check the wind,observe the sky, check the inverter load and attempt the task,or fire up the genset so you can be sure of your power needs,until job complete.
Until you live with it,it seems most people just cannot understand this.
