While he was a dictator, his rule was nowhere near as brutal as the regime he replace. The Spanish Civil War, however, was particularly brutal on both sides.

          2. Franco certainly was brutal in consolidating power but he was no classical fascist. He provided 50,000 visas to allow Jews to travel from France to Portugal to escape the Nazis. He did provide volunteer troops to help the Germans to repay the German and Italian volunteers who had helped him gain power but he kept Spain out of the war. In the 1960s Spain was a quaint peaceful place where tourists could buy wine for something like 30 cents a liter. It was a dictatorship not unlike all the countries in Latin America at the time. At the time maybe 25% of the world population lived in a Democracy with most of those in India.

        2. I’ve often thought the best way to address the bloc is to use the tools available.
          Namely establish Bloc riding associations outside of Quebec, and then when the refuse to admit lodge a complaint with the human rights commission.
          Would they entertain such a case?
          Maybe maybe not, but it would make things very awkward for the Bloc and any of the other parties that have benefited from their existence.
          I’ll just leave that out there so as not to bog down this thread.

          But out of curiosity, would anyone else be interested in advocating for Quebec to leave?

  9. I’d say Trudeau is in trouble, probably pondering restarting the teaching career.

    The NDP are not folding, so he’s not going to get votes from there. The Bloc is holding steady so he won’t sweep Quebec. O’Toole won’t do any worse than Scheer did in 2019. So what new ridings will he have after election day?

    He was even speculating that he might need to put mama in a home.

    O’Toole did mention Trudeau’s admiration for China but I think it went over most casual viewers’ heads as it was right at a break point with the moderator jumping in to change the subject.

    Glad in a way that Max was banned because that would have changed the dynamic from let’s gang up on Justin to let’s gang up on Max, and in any case if a person doesn’t get the need for a different approach to all the media-driven issues by now, they are probably beyond hope (like Lytton).

    Look for Trudeau to have a “good” week, with a minority government win next Monday. Look for a Liberal-NDP coalition government.

    1. There was no check when the Dems used fraud to steal an election either. Any system is only as good as the people in it. Right now we have three parties in parliament who all agree with each other about every important issue. The situation in the US would be exactly the same as in Canada if both the Dems and Reps were in agreement on every issue.

          1. Yes, the Germans “allowed” the British to escape at Dunkirk, in the sense that they chose not to risk the substantial portion of their tank force that was in position to take them on. The French forces were resisting fiercely, and while much of the BEF was in disarray, they nonetheless had substantial forces fighting effectively. The Germans could not be confident of certain victory, and they knew they might need those tanks, and indeed used them much more productively elsewhere; and since the British posed no immediate threat, simply let them go.

            Not a bad decision. The British were out of the war and would not be back for years. There were cases in Russia later in the war when the Germans were not so careful with their forces, and always paid dearly for it. But it doesn’t look to me like either the French or the Germans “saving” Britain.

      She has dementia and she started to walk out of a shop without paying, when confronted she wanted to pay for the items but the shop wouldn’t let her but did let her leave then they called the cops.

      Then she was walking home (I gather she is still in the early stages of dementia and had been somewhat independent) and the cops jumped her like she was a hardened criminal, broke her arm, and then put her in a cell without medical treatment for many hours. Finally, a female jail attendant noticed how much pain she was in and called an ambulance.

      At least that is how it was reported in the Denver papers, people are horrified (and they should be); this lady was confused, was not resisting arrest beyond being confused and if I recall correctly weighs about 80 pounds.

      To think of officers watching the tape and laughing is despicable beyond belief, the officers involved should be tried for criminal assault of a disabled person and the city had better be ready to cough up the cash in a settlement before a jury costs them even more.

  23. In rural Alberta. I went to vote just after 9:00 AM today and there was a line way into the parking lot. I decided to go back later. I suspect the Maverick Party is bringing out the voters. I hear a rumbling in the proletariat masses. I don’t know if they will elect any members this time but it should wake up the Conservatives but, alas, they are too fckuing stupid.

      Not many workers. Only one worker per table. Lots of physical distancing.
