I cannot remember the name of this plant and it’s driving me nuts. In that, I’ve wondered about it for years after having a terrible asthma-like reaction to it when I was a kid. Google was no help at all, so I grabbed a sprig this evening when I was out on my mountain flatlander bike. It grows wild in pastures and ditches, and has a pungent scent. Given I have access to the blogosphere’s top resource for expertise on prairie weeds, it just makes sense to ask here.

update: asked and answered, thanks all.

I’m from the SW of Sask. Never seen that one here.
There is an app for that. I don’t know either.
Yarrow?
If it’s the same roadside weed found in Northern Ontario it is known as “Pearly Everlasting” and it stinks when dried.
I checked it out on the net. Try Hoary Cress.
It’s Common Yarrow. Edible and medicinal.
Yes, it seems to be Yarrow.
I uploaded your image here:

Yup, that’s it. The name is now familiar as well. Thanks all!
Good one, Kate- flatland bike!!!! Brought a smile!
Might be yarrow,
Weren’t you supposed to use Yarrow sticks when doing the I-Ching? Back in my stupid youth, I used dry spaghetti. I know better now to eat the spaghetti 🙂
Yarrow, helped clot blood in ancient battlefield wounds around the world.
So you almost died from an allergic anaphylactic reaction from it when you were younger, yet you grabbed some and took it with while out away from civilization? Are you out of your mind? Didn’t you have your phone with to take a picture?
Allergies can change as we age. 28 years ago I had a list of 65 foods and environmental things like pollen and mold that I had terrible reactions to. Had to carry an Epi syringe at all times. Then, in the space of about a year, they disappeared. I haven’t had any problems since. That was also the year I took up skydiving…….Hmm, I wonder……
Asthma like, not anaphylactic. I had made a bouquet of the stuff and inhaled it all afternoon. Figured it was safe enough in my pocket.
If there was an anaphylactic reaction, I would be leaning towards Giant Hogweed. It has spines along the stem that inject a poison into the dermis that produces a tingling and burning sensation almost immediately (have personal experience with this one in my garden).

I used to live near Yarrow (BC) so I knew that one. “Named after the bitterest herb in the region”.
You early risers out east are quick; it must grow around there too.
I don’t know about that Auji, I have been allergic to lieing stupid crooked liberals since I was a little boy, at 11, I watched the retards father bribe the room with free cokes for everyone back when that first Peeair commie creep won the liberal leadership, and went on to decimate Canada. I asked my dad why a free coke would make anyone vote for him, he said “they are liberals, too stupid to know they’ve been bribed”. So Iv’e had a deep allergy for those perverted creeps, that has never changed, and never will all my life.
I’m pretty sure is a banana.
The return of the giant Yarrow Weed.
back about 1987 , we got overly baby busy and the cabin didnt get a visit from spring till early fall. these had grown to almost 4 ft over a few thousand square ft . a frightening scene as i had never seen one before . they do distribute alot of seeds. thanks monsanto for roundup broad leaf herbicide for two years following
Here’s another Yarrow plant that drives me nuts, gives me an asthmatic reaction, and is the origin of statue toppling, looting, burning, and a takedown of the US Constitution…

Sure. It’s a sacred plant for us dijinuss peoples. But then again, they’re all sacred. Along with every place where they grow … and don’t grow. 🙂
The App is called Picture This. Free on iPhones. Works great.
I think it is a noose. It probably means that you’re a white supremacist neonazi.
Hi Kate, I’m pretty sure it’s the Yarrow weed! I didn’t do any research, but there’s a blog I go to as much as I can, cuz there is a whole bunch of earnest sensible people, with a great deal of pent up knowledge they’re just bustin’ to share, they tend to lean conservative, but that’s not really a flaw. They also have a great sense of humor too. You might want to try it out sometime, just punch in smalldeadanimals.com, and you’ll get a great deal of pleasure, knowledge, and friendly banter from it! I’m actually trying to figger out how to donate to it, but these computer thingies are tough for me to use.
(if you could give me a tip on how to, I’d really appreciate it!)
Hey Gerry. Go to the top of this thread. Look in the top right corner where it says, “why this blog?” Scroll down just a little, you will see the Yellow donate button right underneath Katewerk Art. You might want to click that one too. I find her Art as much to my taste as her sarcasm.
I have trouble with computers too but brandy doesn’t help.
Many years ago a friend who I was helping with repairs to his house accidentally dropped an 8” clamp on my head opening a three inch gash in my scalp. It proceeded to leak as scalp wounds often do and thought I would have to go to hospital for stitches. Hugh poured a vial of dried yarrow on it. It stopped bleeding in two seconds, was healed in four days with none of the usual, drive you crazy, itching and left no scar. Amazing herb.
The gold yarrow that grows wild here messes up my allergies/asthma but the domesticated white and red yarrows don’t bother me unless I stick my face next to them. Gold yarrow looks lovely with roses, and are seen together in a lot of herb and flower arrangement books
After buying a second home and struggling to get a handle on the landscape, discovered a phone app called “picture this”. You take a picture of the plant, better if there are flowers, and then it tells you what it is. It’s amazing. It nailed all the palms, grasses and flowering shrubs scattered around the planting beds in the front and back. Very cool.
I took a picture of Kate’s picture, and the “picture this” app says it’s common yarrow, a species of daisy, and a poisonous, noxious weed. Also known as Bloodwort, Milfoil, Gordaido, Nosebleed plant, Old man’s pepper, Devil’s nettle, Sanguinary, Soldier’s woundwort. It also says that certain western countries in Europe and the United States consider it noxious. It’s very common and very likely to be touched. It says, “Please note that exposure to it may cause allergies.”
Yarrow hasn’t received this much attention since Peter, Paul and Mary were together.
