      BTW, I quit watching ALL Canadian news but I understand this was a big story yesterday and this morning so I’m wondering if they’re giving it a good leaving alone now that it’s been proven a hoax?
      You’d think they’d learn the 48 hr rule or at least wait till the investigation is over but why would you when there’s no consequences.

      My Ph. D. supervisor whined that I was using reference material from the early 1970s in my thesis and it should be more “current”. So, say, Ohm’s Law described in a textbook from 50 years ago is considered out of date and invalid but Ohm’s Law mentioned in one published within the last 5 years is?

      2. B A, I am a retired academic (in economics), and it is true academic articles should, however briefly, survey recent academic work. But in my field, it is considered cool, or trendy, to include work going back decades, or even a century. It makes the writer seem broad minded, and that is considered cool.

        1. In my case, I just happened to have the older references in my personal library at home. The alternative would have been to go on campus and borrow a stack of books.

          Then again, my supervisor didn’t particularly like me, largely, I think, because I was independent in my ways and didn’t play the academic game. He was always looking for something about my work to whine about.

        Much of the Scientific data contained in say: ASM Metals Handbook Series (23+ books), is information gained over the past 2 centuries…and not last week.

          I inherited a fine set of measuring instruments from my father, but many of them used vernier scales. One machinist who knew him told me that I might have difficulty in selling them because apprentices only want the digital devices. (Fortunately, I sold them to a friend of his who worked with precision instruments. He liked the mechanical ones because they tend to stay calibrated.)

          Recently, I made inquiries about possibly donating some of my father’s books to a certain post-secondary institution. I was told in no uncertain terms that anything older than 5 years won’t be accepted. I replied that some trade texts haven’t been updated after being published decades ago because there’s no need to. They’ve become standard references in industry.

          No response.

          During my years of teaching at Armpit College, I’ve seen the kind of crap that academic publishers put out. For example, a worked example in, say, physics has to have brightly coloured pictures. A simple black and white diagram won’t do any more, you see.

          Worse is when it comes time to actually doing the calculations. Not only are the numbers written down, but–get this!–pictures of the actual numerals, the actual keys one presses on the calculator, are shown as well. It isn’t enough to show 3 + 2 = 5. Nope! They have to include (3 key) (+ key) (2 key) (= key) (5 displayed on calculator)

          And you wonder why some of the apprentices you deal with are a few beers short of a sixpack?

    2. The barbarians in Minneapolis Minnesota burnt down Uncle Hugo’s Science Fiction Bookstore and Uncle Edgar’s Mystery Bookstore. Uncle Hugos was the oldest S/F bookstore in the nation. They both were filled with rare and collectible books including signed copies and first editions.

  13. Great news that Jay Hill is now leading the Wexit movement. I will not be voting for the new CPC leader as that party is now not even pretending to be a national force. MacKay has promised Quebec a veto over any pipeline crossing that province. Over $500 billion of equalization has gone into Quebec and this is the attitude.

    The CPC, even under Harper, have maintained the West as 2nd rate citizens. As an original Reformer, one who voted against moving east, I will vote Wexit.

  14. FOX news is reporting, as its lead web page story, that a Wisconsin Democrat state senator was mugged by radicals in Madison, after talking video of rioting outside the state capitol building. This article also mentions that the radical rioters tore down the statue of Col. Hans Christian Heg, an ardent abolitionist who was killed in the Civil War.

    I am descended of Southerners who fought in that war, but here is the Wiki entry on Col. Heg. Reading it one can see he was a brave, wonderful man:

This is because almost all Canadian produced aluminum is exported to the USA while almost all aluminum used in Canada is imported from China? How stupid is Turdboy if he thinks this can continue?   18. Anybody notice that Tonic water is not available? I spoke to a small town grocery store manager this week and he said it isn’t available.

    Yesterday I spoke with the driver of the Coke truck. He said they haven’t had it for sometime. Said they have 15 products that they can’t supply. The trap shack has a well stocked bar. When the boys stop by they might want a G&T.

    Ya gotta have tonic for the classic summer drink. Hell the old Queen Mom drank gin everyday into her 100’s.

    1. We’ve also been noticing a real drop in low cal soda variety and availability. Must be issues in the chemistry supply chains.

      Maybe tonic is a symbol of systemic racism.

      I checked the pop isle at the Superstore when this pandemic began. There was none. I haven’t checked recently.

      Since Canada Dry Tonic water contains: Carbonated Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate (Preservative), Quinine, Natural Flavors. Why not try making your own?

      If I may, here’s a suggestion: Invest in a ‘SodaStream’ machine and ‘zap’ some plain old water. Then either add lime juice, lemon juice or grapefruit juice.

      I invested in a SodaStream machine about 3 years ago. Unfortunately the electric ones aren’t available any longer but the regular pump ones work just as well. I purchase the CO2 refills at Canadian Tire. They credit your used canister. Best to keep at least 2 of them on hand.

      It’s so nice to have a plain glass of cold fizzy water. Club Soda is a waste of money.

        You can purchase designer tonic at a designer price and bad taste like all these artisnal products. I like gin that tastes like gin. Beefeater’s – a bar gin – you can taste the juniper. The market is full of weasel piss botanicals called gin. They are not. So there!

  28. Breaking news from Blackie’s CBC. A letter signed by a wide cross section of the Laurentian elites have been sent to Great Leader asking for Meng to be released. Signatures are from politicians of all major parties, the media, and other China junkies. I’m sure this is not part of the plan by the Liberal Party to prepare Canadians for the release.

    1. I don’t know about the rest of the readership here on Small Dead Animals, but if the 19 signatories of that letter were to accompany Meng back to China in exchange for the Two Michaels and the Chinese agreed to keep them permanently detained, I could live with that.
