More – Grocery inflation due to pandemic: In the past week, prices have risen for fresh meat by 8%, eggs by 31% cheese by 11% and cows milk by 10% versus this time last year via new numbers from @nielsen

He glosses over a very important detail. He didn’t address the specifics of why these plants are shutting down. Chinese owned Smithfield Foods closed down all their US plants ( a large % of the pork processing) due to “exposed” employees where the infected rate of employees vastly exceeded the exposure figures for the surrounding neighborhoods. It’s almost like it was purposefully done…somehow.
To be honest I find the supply chain issues the more fascinating and terrifying of this whole event. I was just waiting for him to talk about not enough deer in the forrest if everyone had to go out and hunt. Meanwhile the folks with food in a bucket and MREs are thinking I told ya so. That said, why not send in the reserve or the army?
I’m a bit concerned about something else altogether, but somewhat related. So far, this disease has jumped to a handful of cats and one dog. What if it jumps to livestock?
Oh, and keep in mind that China had to destroy millions upon millions of their livestock over the last few years claiming it was a form of Swine Flu. Forgive me if I don’t take them at their word.
Shutting down meat plants is directly related to housing foreign workers in crowded dormitory style housing and not bothering with the equipment required to keep workers safe. There are plenty of plants out there that are doing just fine. Look at Hy Line in Manitoba which is owned by Thailand and runs mostly on Philipino new immigrants to Canada. No dormitories, no common bussing to work but rather new immigrants with their families living like Canadians. Company has put a fortune into PPE for each worker which they were already using before the epidemic but stocked up on as soon as a whisper of the pandemic was heard (and did not ship it off to China for free or give it to the government.) Every worker gets questioned on arrival for symptoms. Everyone is wearing masks. Company gives very liberal time off if you have symptoms to prevent workers from feeling they have to go in. If anyone in your family is sick you’re supposed to stay home. They have a vigorous employee education program about the COVID-19. They have as many people as possible working from home and supports to let them do it. Those who are at work are spaced a minimum of 6 feet with plexiglass screens and the company even created a second cafeteria and workers eat lunch in shifts to keep people safe. Yes, it costs more but they are still running. Further the town they are the major employer in has not had a single case. Letting your employees get and spread COVID-19 is just bad business practice.
You know what’s weird?
My local grocery store is flat out of popcorn and has been for a while.
Lots of fries and hashies, can’t get yeast for anything short of gold. A neighbour gave me some h wasn’t using. I should sell it on the black market…
Yeast is in short supply here in Nanaimo but my wife mentioned it to her mom in Saskatchewan and she mailed a bunch out. Arrived today.
Hmmm…just got back from grocery shopping. Nothing seemed low in stock. Plenty of meats, veggies, fruit, snacks, milk etc etc etc. The only thing running low in the entire store (in this case Giant Superstore) was the Campbell’s soup section. But, plenty, and I mean plenty of Progresso and other brands. Whole row of paper towels and toilet paper. Pet food was fine.
It looked like it always looks. Keep in mind this is the end of the week. I think their major restock comes Sunday evenings.
Hopefully the breadbasket and energy area of Canada is able to keep the supply chains open to the more progressive areas of Canada. I would hate to see liberals without food or energy.
Likewise, I’m sure Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba would be in big trouble if we didn’t have access to maple syrup and whatever else we get from the important parts of Canada.
Its not the covid that is causing that
it is the over reaction to something no worse than the flu
just like the toilet paper thing
the covid did not cause a higher demand for toilet paper
the unjustified fear did to the point people were buying enough toilet paper for the next 20 years and were getting into fist fights
that was not the covid
that was the unjustified hysteria that the media created and on which they pour more gasoline everyday to keep the flames of hysteria burning
the covid has reminded us that humans despite their very advanced technologies are no more evolved than sheep, no more evolved than Bison ; they will jump off a cliff if everyone else does it
There are packing plants in which half the employees are sick or infected. I’m not sure why you hang around here if you don’t actually read the material provided.
