Yes, let’s deal with this problem not with policies targeted on the elderly, but by shutting down the economy which ultimately supports them. We’ll deal with the ruined economy later- and with all the deaths that will be directly caused by the coming economic depression. Meanwhile, it’s martial law for everyone.
Big government and politically connected big business of course will come out of this smelling like roses. The current policies to fight the virus will push all the pain onto the middle and lower-middle classes.
Here’s a modest suggestion to ensure everyone feels the pain. As part of the martial law, subtract 20% from all government employees paychecks and put it in a fund to be distributed to all the small businessman who will be ruined, and their employees. Likewise for anyone who still has a job . (The law that establishes this should sunset in 20 years.). Do the same for all pensioners with incomes over $30,000 per year ( Their free medical care will not be counted as income.)
Also confiscate 80% of the net worth of anyone who had incomes of over $500,000, averaged over the last five years. Also, no bailouts for big business.
The pain should be shared evenly, not borne by the middle, and lower-middle class, as the current government policies guarantee will happen.
So because I saved and scrimped for 45 years, never taking a trip outside of the country, going at times, a decade without taking a vacation, you somehow feel you have the right to confiscate my pension dollars? Explain how you would do that without angering me so much that I start hunting again.
It’s not what I prefer, but this is government action causing the unemployment. It is only fair that those ruined by it are made whole by their countrymen who are in a better situation , who by and large are silently approving of it. Who knows, maybe the deduction would only be 10%. If it’s not done, there will be a revolution.

Everyone I know in Calgary has shut down and is working from home or laid off (mostly working from home) for at least a week now. We are trying to avoid an Italy-type disaster and most everyone is aware now how serious this is. We need to act now, and keep the isolation up, or we all will be in a ’30s style great depression or will kill off our at-risk population. Those include our parents, our neighbours, our friends.

It may well turn out to be valuable or it may turn out to be either useless or harmful at whatever dose is required or produce some side effect. Point is we don’t know this now, though it’s strongly suspected to be useful. Hence no one says anything definitive until there’s some solid science behind it.
This in my view is intelligent and cautious. Far worse is to praise the possibility to the skies and then end up dashing hopes which may have been invested in it. Even worse would be compromising the public health measures that are necessary anyway in anticipation of a panacea which turned out not to be the case.
Best thing as this point is everyone maintain personal discipline and not to panic.

It’s not a reason to panic. (I’m never quite sure what one is supposed to do when panicking anyway — choke the person next to you?) But we have to take it very seriously, even if some of the air-headed politicians don’t or do so far later than they should have. The ultimate defence — probably an effective vaccine, will take time to develop, produce and administer. The sooner we can contain and eradicate this, the sooner we can get back to our regular lives.

The virus has been moving around the world for four months +. There is no evidence of this happening anywhere. The young and otherwise healthy are notably hardly impacted at all. For the old and otherwise vulnerable this is worse than influenza; for everyone else it’s pretty much normal life.
There is a sound argument for a short term (3 – 4 weeks max) “lockdown” to save as many of the old and vulnerable (and their carers) as possible, but beyond that we should return to normal and get as many infected -> recovered as we can so we don’t have to do all this again next winter.
What we are in mortal danger of is idiot politicians destroying our economies and freedoms because they’re too scared of what the likes of Piers Effing Morgan are spluttering about on the telly.
DrD as it has been reported, there is selection bias in that sample that yields a 4% mortality rate. Apparently in Italy only the very worst cases are tested and confirmed and admitted to hospital. I think mostly people who have pneumonia are admitted. That is the divisor that yields the 4% mortality rate.
Is that .01% mortality rate you quote based on all people who are admitted to hospital with pneumonia due to the common flu? Seems unlikely – that’s one out of 10,000 admissions succumbing to flu. For the US, that would imply 160 million people per year would have to have common flu to yield 16,000 flu deaths, which was the number for either 2015 or 2016. Seems improbable that half the US population came down with the flu in any one year.
