Well, my plans of blogging a little in the evenings went down the tubes when the hotel wifi refused a connection to my laptop. My apologies, but there’s not much I can do about it We’ll see how the coming week unfolds, but I’ll be at a different fairground in the Chicago area.enc

Again, thanks for your patience. I see yesterday’s RT post has upwards of 150 comments. Maybe Trudeau’s been turfed, maybe you’re just complaining or bored. But the meal will be here soon at this restaurant so my time online is again, brief.

We did win like snot this weekend, so there’s that.

            That’s how it is at our place Ken but we won’t give up yet. Remember 2002. The rain didn’t come until the 3rd week in June and then it wouldn’t quit. We ended the season with close to 20 inches of rain, a fair crop and the cowboy’s pastures recharged with plenty of reserve moisture.

If I remember correctly, it was 2001 or 2003 when I hired a neighbour to swath a couple of quarters of wheat. His swather was 30′ and he could throw the swath out either end. He made 60′ swaths and when it got dark I had to quit combining as I couldn’t see where to drive.

          4. Down here we thought spring would never arrive, and it’s been raining nearly non stop since. Only two rounds of golf so far. The fields have hundreds of acres of standing water around us while north and south on the I29 entire sections are under water.
            Congrats and further terrific luck with the hounds, Kate. One of my golf friends raises two bizarre and rather hideous breeds of dogs. I’d not heard of either breed. She’s talked about the show related expenses, ensuring appropriate judges will be on site, paying expenses for said judges, finding handlers. Hers cancelled last minute this week which has been occurring frequently. She’s at a show somewhere. And good luck to her as well.

    The theory that labour demand will increase wages when there are worker shortages is sound just don’t tell neo-Marxists like Kathleen Wynne. The participation rate is 65%. Is that high or low? Workers getting higher wages is, of course, inflationary, but we aren’t seeing the lending rate change. Why is that? Is it because of enormous government debt?
    To me there are a lot of things in today’s economic world that don’t make sense.

    1. The labor participation rate (LPR) is the number of people employed and unemployed but looking for work (the numerator) divided by the total working-age population (the denominator). It was much lower in the early 1970s (probably due to less women working). We should expect the rate to slowly increase as more boomers enter their retirement years and are no longer included in the denominator. Because the LPR also includes unemployed it helps to look at that graph as well.

      Interesting that after the last 3 major recessions (1982, 1990 and 2008) it took almost 10 years to get all those laid-off people back to work.

      The LPR has never gone above 68% since 1976 (the edge of the graph) and back then was under 62%.

      1. I made a mistake Buddy. If 50,000 boomers leave the work force, both the numerator and denominator drop by the same amount. Because the numerator (people working or looking for work) is smaller, the participation rate actually drops. So we should expect a falling LPR as more boomers retire. This probably explains the rapid rise in the 1970s. These were the boomers first entering the labor market.

Obviously western government business plans are immigration to offset falling birthrates. An antithetical response considering dire world “pollution” and Artificial Intelligence’s bloom.

      I recall PM Harper gave the OK to restart the reactor without the systems in place cuz the likelihood of an accident was soooooooooooo low. Harper also fired the head of the Canadian Nuclear Safety regulator for holding up the reactor restart without the safety systems in place.

      As for the waste, dilution is he solution. Just add water until the concentration of radioactivity is within regulatory limits. Legal limits do change as circumstances dictate as in Fukushima where 3 USA design General Electric reactors cores melted down.
