My Generation Is Blind to the Prosperity Around Us!
I’m sitting in a small coffee shop near Nokomis trying to think of what to write about. I scroll through my newsfeed on my phone looking at the latest headlines of Democratic candidates calling for policies to “fix” the so-called injustices of capitalism. I put my phone down and continue to look around. I see people talking freely, working on their MacBooks, ordering food they get in an instant, seeing cars go by outside, and it dawned on me. We live in the most privileged time in the most prosperous nation and we’ve become completely blind to it. Vehicles, food, technology, freedom to associate with whom we choose. These things are so ingrained in our American way of life we don’t give them a second thought. We are so well off here in the United States that our poverty line begins 31 times above the global average. Thirty. One. Times. Virtually no one in the United States is considered poor by global standards. Yet, in a time where we can order a product off Amazon with one click and have it at our doorstep the next day, we are unappreciative, unsatisfied, and ungrateful.
Our inappreciation is evident as the popularity of socialist policies among my generation continues to grow. Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently said to Newsweek talking about the millennial generation, “An entire generation, which is now becoming one of the largest electorates in America, came of age and never saw American prosperity.”
Never saw American prosperity! Let that sink in. When I first read that statement, I thought to myself, that was quite literally the most entitled and factually illiterate thing I’ve ever heard in my 26 years on this earth. Many young people agree with her, which is entirely misguided. My generation is being indoctrinated by a mainstream narrative to actually believe we have never seen prosperity. I know this first hand, I went to college, let’s just say I didn’t have the popular opinion, but I digress.
Why then, with all of the overwhelming evidence around us, evidence that I can even see sitting at a coffee shop, do we not view this as prosperity? We have people who are dying to get into our country. People around the world destitute and truly impoverished. Yet, we have a young generation convinced they’ve never seen prosperity, and as a result, elect politicians dead set on taking steps towards abolishing capitalism.
Why? The answer is this, my generation has only seen prosperity. We have no contrast. We didn’t live in the great depression, or live through two world wars, the Korean War, The Vietnam War or see the rise and fall of socialism and communism. We don’t know what it’s like to live without the internet, without cars, without smartphones. We don’t have a lack of prosperity problem.
We have an entitlement problem, an ungratefulness problem, and it’s spreading like a plague.”

The young lady is right. It is sad. I can’t begin to adequately describe what my extended family lived through for seventy years under the Soviet socialist utopian system. The daily fear of denunciation and arrest, the lack of freedom of speech and thought, the hunger and trying to steal a few potatoes or corn cobs, the poverty, the executions, the labour camps, and so on. These people have no idea of what they are asking for.
But, it does look like we are headed that way, in the US and certainly in Canada.

In 2006, I visited Sydney, Australia. There’s an island in Botany Bay near Sydney that is know as Bare Island. It houses a concrete fort, one of the last built by the British Commonwealth and competed in 1889. . When they constructed the fort, they carved a small dock out of the solid rock at the base of the island. The dock was made to accommodate small rowboats that brought supplies from the ships anchored in and near Botany Bay. A recent study of ocean levels in Campbell River BC on Vancouver Island show a very slight decrease in ocean level over the past 50 years … a VERY slight decrease, but that the opposite of a ‘rise’.
This indicates stability which anyone who lives on the shores of the oceans can tell you. There is no genuine evidence of any of the claims being made by government scientists that the earth is about to burn up under a cruel sun.

This is confusing. Notley (Alberta’s leader of the Opposition) is demanding the Alberta Government continue to support her previous initiative to “study a ban on” gender conversion therapy.
But in an open letter from the NDP to the Health Minister the NDP admits gender conversion therapy is already (effectively) banned …

More than 25 years ago, there was a news item in which it was suggested that there was a genetic basis. It got a lot of attention at the time, partly because it was a plausible explanation. But that’s pretty much where it ended as there hasn’t been much mention of that idea ever since.
So it didn’t work for you. Maybe you really didn’t give it a fair trial.
To me the issue is not conversion therapy (I see no difference between that and counseling people to proceed with transgender). The issue is the former Alberta Premier wants to pay people to study a problem that isn’t even a problem. Conversion therapy is not supported by the Alberta government in the first place. Why does that need to be studied? And Notley couldn’t find any way to reduce her deficit? What a crappy former leader who lost an election because she is a woman.

Kugluktuk in Nunavut is (more or less) half-way between Alaska and Salluit. Average temperature for March 2019 was -16 deg C. Not a single day above freezing during March.
Alaska is warm and most of the rest of the Arctic is cold so therefore we have unprecedented warming in the Arctic.

Just had an amazing revelation over the weekend about the herd mentality of liberals and democrats. It happened in a Brewers retail in Ontario. I walked in the door to the local “beer” store for the first time in thirty years and found all of the sheep lined up, dutifully waiting while a government employee brought out their order from the back room. The display case at the front of the store had approximately two to three dozen selections that the ‘fortunate’ imbiber could choose from. This throwback to the Fifties made me realize that we are fighting a loosing battle in trying to convince our fellow Canadians of the futility of voting for any Liberal, ‘soft’ Liberal/Conservative, NDP’ers and Greenies. The average Eastern and Central dwelling Canadian is too immersed in the pot to ever think of getting out. The problem is that they are like the crabs in the next pot and keep dragging those of us that want better back into the morass that they are comfortable in. Enough! It really is time for a serious discussion about Western separation, before too many of the sheep move west of the Ontario/Manitoba border.

Where were you? I’ve lived in Ontario all my life and haven’t seen a beer store like that in 30 years.
I don’t drink beer so my experiences are limited here. But last year I ventured into the Georgetown beer store because my beer-drinking brother-in-law was in town and always helps me out with anything to do with construction.
I walked into the beer store and patiently waited inline for the cashier. When it was my turn I placed my order. The cashier looked at me like I was from another planet. Finally he went over to the cold room and brought back my order. While I was paying someone tapped me on the back. I turned around and an older fellow said “It’s been self-serve here for at least ten years”.

First off, that employee doesn’t work for the government. Brewers Retail is a privately owned company. Its principal owners are the brewers themselves, Molson Coors Brewing Company, Labatt Brewing Company, and Sleeman Breweries. These companies are effectively owned and controlled by foreign companies. Despite this monopoly, you will save yourself between $6 to $12 per case if you buy your beer in Ontario versus the western provinces.
Second, while there may have only been two to three dozen brands on display out front, there are well over a hundred available in the back. The type of store that you mention is becoming the minority style of beer store anyway. In most stores, you walk into the part of the store where the beer is kept and lug your own two-four to the cash.
Recently, beer sales have moved to a select few grocery stores where, I assure you, there is decidedly less choice, and frequently empty shelves. The Ford government is currently working to end an agreement signed by the Wynne Liberals that guaranteed the current set-up with the big breweries for another 10-years. Ford wants to expand sales to all grocery and corner convenience stores. The unions of course are fighting this move and assuring us the world will end if Ford has his way.
I understand the point you were trying to make, but you might want to do a little research before you use something you obviously know nothing about as the central point of your argument.

I’m in Ontario at the moment. Was in a Soviet style ‘beer store’ yesterday. Lineup, get to the till, you better know what you want, order, pay, the sour puss then disappears to the back room and your purchase rolls out on a conveyor. The lineup moves along at glacial speed.

You want weird beer laws. I got stuck in Moosejaw once in my early 20s. I wanted to buy beer and they sent me to the bar at the hotel. Then they couldn’t sell it to me because it was the wrong time. They wouldn’t sell me a two-four either. I’m sure that has changed too.
The sale of beer in Ontario is an issue that has been perpetuated by Government and a big business brewing oligopoly. The current government is trying to change it but is meeting extreme resistance from the usual suspects, unions, liberals and businesses in bed with the liberals.
The liquor business in AB is private. Every store has it’s own specialty and price. Sales go on all the time. Most weekends.
Not sure how your example came up with the price it did? Costco sells Canadian in 48’s.

Oh, and things have changed in Moose Jaw since you were stuck there in your 20’s. The hotels at the time sold off sales after the liquor vendors closed for the day. Something that wasn’t available in Ontario.

Just finished a new book on the Fenian invasions of Canada. Odd, but understandable story, although I’ve never figured out why people put flowers (and toys!) on graves. The dead person is in another realm already, one either unimaginably beautiful or hellish. Or perhaps just bleak, like the droning of CBC radio.
Did you see the pictures from the American cemetery just off Omaha beach this last weekend? Every tombstone had two flags: French and American. It was an act of remembrance to look at each stone, mention the name of the dead man, and give thanks for his service.
Similarly, in Calgary, there is an area where – each November – crosses and similar markers (Star of David, etc) are set out to remember the Calgarians who fought and died overseas. We remember.
If you ever look at obituaries, you will be struck by how many times a child who died in infancy is remembered. The event may have occurred many years ago, but the hurt has remained down the years.
Why do we put flowers on graves? It’s a small but tangible way of saying “I remember, and am grateful”. The ceremony of laying the flower and saying a prayer is at once a remembrance and a healing. And that goes double when visiting very tiny graves.

My Generation Is Blind to the Prosperity Around Us!
I’m sitting in a small coffee shop near Nokomis trying to think of what to write about. I scroll through my newsfeed on my phone looking at the latest headlines of Democratic candidates calling for policies to “fix” the so-called injustices of capitalism. I put my phone down and continue to look around. I see people talking freely, working on their MacBooks, ordering food they get in an instant, seeing cars go by outside, and it dawned on me. We live in the most privileged time in the most prosperous nation and we’ve become completely blind to it. Vehicles, food, technology, freedom to associate with whom we choose. These things are so ingrained in our American way of life we don’t give them a second thought. We are so well off here in the United States that our poverty line begins 31 times above the global average. Thirty. One. Times. Virtually no one in the United States is considered poor by global standards. Yet, in a time where we can order a product off Amazon with one click and have it at our doorstep the next day, we are unappreciative, unsatisfied, and ungrateful.
Our inappreciation is evident as the popularity of socialist policies among my generation continues to grow. Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently said to Newsweek talking about the millennial generation, “An entire generation, which is now becoming one of the largest electorates in America, came of age and never saw American prosperity.”
Never saw American prosperity! Let that sink in. When I first read that statement, I thought to myself, that was quite literally the most entitled and factually illiterate thing I’ve ever heard in my 26 years on this earth. Many young people agree with her, which is entirely misguided. My generation is being indoctrinated by a mainstream narrative to actually believe we have never seen prosperity. I know this first hand, I went to college, let’s just say I didn’t have the popular opinion, but I digress.
Why then, with all of the overwhelming evidence around us, evidence that I can even see sitting at a coffee shop, do we not view this as prosperity? We have people who are dying to get into our country. People around the world destitute and truly impoverished. Yet, we have a young generation convinced they’ve never seen prosperity, and as a result, elect politicians dead set on taking steps towards abolishing capitalism.
Why? The answer is this, my generation has only seen prosperity. We have no contrast. We didn’t live in the great depression, or live through two world wars, the Korean War, The Vietnam War or see the rise and fall of socialism and communism. We don’t know what it’s like to live without the internet, without cars, without smartphones. We don’t have a lack of prosperity problem.
We have an entitlement problem, an ungratefulness problem, and it’s spreading like a plague.”

More than 25 years ago, there was a news item in which it was suggested that there was a genetic basis. It got a lot of attention at the time, partly because it was a plausible explanation. But that’s pretty much where it ended as there hasn’t been much mention of that idea ever since.
So it didn’t work for you. Maybe you really didn’t give it a fair trial.
To me the issue is not conversion therapy (I see no difference between that and counseling people to proceed with transgender). The issue is the former Alberta Premier wants to pay people to study a problem that isn’t even a problem. Conversion therapy is not supported by the Alberta government in the first place. Why does that need to be studied? And Notley couldn’t find any way to reduce her deficit? What a crappy former leader who lost an election because she is a woman.

Where were you? I’ve lived in Ontario all my life and haven’t seen a beer store like that in 30 years.
I don’t drink beer so my experiences are limited here. But last year I ventured into the Georgetown beer store because my beer-drinking brother-in-law was in town and always helps me out with anything to do with construction.
I walked into the beer store and patiently waited inline for the cashier. When it was my turn I placed my order. The cashier looked at me like I was from another planet. Finally he went over to the cold room and brought back my order. While I was paying someone tapped me on the back. I turned around and an older fellow said “It’s been self-serve here for at least ten years”.
Vanier (shithole) – in Ottawa has one like that.
First off, that employee doesn’t work for the government. Brewers Retail is a privately owned company. Its principal owners are the brewers themselves, Molson Coors Brewing Company, Labatt Brewing Company, and Sleeman Breweries. These companies are effectively owned and controlled by foreign companies. Despite this monopoly, you will save yourself between $6 to $12 per case if you buy your beer in Ontario versus the western provinces.
Second, while there may have only been two to three dozen brands on display out front, there are well over a hundred available in the back. The type of store that you mention is becoming the minority style of beer store anyway. In most stores, you walk into the part of the store where the beer is kept and lug your own two-four to the cash.
Recently, beer sales have moved to a select few grocery stores where, I assure you, there is decidedly less choice, and frequently empty shelves. The Ford government is currently working to end an agreement signed by the Wynne Liberals that guaranteed the current set-up with the big breweries for another 10-years. Ford wants to expand sales to all grocery and corner convenience stores. The unions of course are fighting this move and assuring us the world will end if Ford has his way.

You want weird beer laws. I got stuck in Moosejaw once in my early 20s. I wanted to buy beer and they sent me to the bar at the hotel. Then they couldn’t sell it to me because it was the wrong time. They wouldn’t sell me a two-four either. I’m sure that has changed too.

The problems with that exam are many such as “rods” as a unit of length, “bushels” as a unit of volume and so on. Plus the questions are very poorly worded such as…

Seven percent per what? Per month, per day, per year? Also which months because some months have more days than others. The question cannot be answered accurately. If you convert months to days do you assume 30 days or can you just say “approximately $25.36 assuming 30 days in a month, 365 days in a year, and 7% yearly interest”.

Actually, I think they are pretty representative of the demographic in Toronto. Years ago I found I was the only white person on a bus. I guess visible “minority” is no longer the correct term to describe the brown, black and Asian population in Toronto.

Visited the Superstore in NE Calgary a few months ago and aside from my wife and myself, there were only two other white people. Store was also jam packed at the time.

Odd, but understandable story, although I’ve never figured out why people put flowers (and toys!) on graves. The dead person is in another realm already, one either unimaginably beautiful or hellish. Or perhaps just bleak, like the droning of CBC radio.
Did you see the pictures from the American cemetery just off Omaha beach this last weekend? Every tombstone had two flags: French and American. It was an act of remembrance to look at each stone, mention the name of the dead man, and give thanks for his service.
Similarly, in Calgary, there is an area where – each November – crosses and similar markers (Star of David, etc) are set out to remember the Calgarians who fought and died overseas. We remember.
If you ever look at obituaries, you will be struck by how many times a child who died in infancy is remembered. The event may have occurred many years ago, but the hurt has remained down the years.
Why do we put flowers on graves? It’s a small but tangible way of saying “I remember, and am grateful”. The ceremony of laying the flower and saying a prayer is at once a remembrance and a healing. And that goes double when visiting very tiny graves.
