A few months ago I read Anne Applebaum’s excellent Red Famine – the story of the genocide by starvation of about 3 million Ukrainians by Stalin in the early 30s.

Historical Amnesia is a problem but not in this way, imo. It’s not quibbling over 30 or 70 million that’s the problem since either number is an incredibly huge loss of human life. No, the problem is the failure to have an strong emotional connection with a handful of people in those millions. An Anne Frank, an Alan Kurdi, the Hiroshima child. Lee was a great Virginia patriot who thought the Union had dissolved. He honored his loyalty the best he knew how in a very difficult time, and maintained his honor throughout his life. If he stayed with the Union, he would have commanded the Union army. By choosing to defend his home commonwealth of Virginia (which by then was the only political entity he thought was left) he commanded only the Virginia militia. Few traitors and criminals would make such a choice. The honor bestowed upon him by the victorious Union army showed what great regard they held him in.
As to slavery, you should be informed that at the time of the war, Lee had already freed his slaves as a matter of conscience, while Grant owned slaves (which he inherited but true nevertheless.)
Great men can recognize greatness even in adversaries, if they are both men of conscience, albeit of different beliefs. Richard Plantagenet and Saladin could do that, and Richard was treated much more nobly by Saladin than by his fellow Christians, inclusive of his own brother.
This is totally wrong, Southern states ceceded from the union of states to establish the Confederacy. At the time they had every right to do so. Once the war is lost, a different set of rules apply based on the conditions of surrender, but States were entitled to declair their sovereignty. Lee was a hero and a very impressive leader. Don’t forget that Lee was offered the position of commander of the Union army. After considerable thought, he turned it down and sided with the Confederacy. He was a Virginian, after all, and he was loyal to that part of the country.
Had he accepted Lincoln’s offer, the American civil war might have been a lot shorter and less bloody. He wasn’t just a fighter, he was a tactician and he knew many of the commanders on both sides, having served with them or was a student with them at West Point. That was one reason why Lincoln kept replacing the men in that job–Lee easily figured them out and kept defeating them. One of Lee’s biggest fears was that Lincoln would appoint a senior commander that he couldn’t outguess.
George McClellan, on the other hand, didn’t do anything a whole lot while he held the position, much to Lincoln’s annoyance. It wasn’t until Grant captured Vicksburg, particularly in the way he did it, that Lincoln knew he had someone who could defeat the Confederacy.
