Art Of The Deal

Thomas Lifson;

President Trump clearly shocked House Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer yesterday with his televising of the Oval Office sit-down over his demand for $5 billion funding for border security, including funding of critical mileage for his border wall. Knowing well that Pelosi had already vowed publicly that “transparency and openness” would characterize the Democrat-run House starting next month, her plaintive request to speak in private scored points for Trump and revealed her hypocrisy before any substance at all was considered.

The remarkable body language during the meeting tells the story of Trump’s dominance.

That was merely the first of three traps Trump had prepared for the Democrats’ congressional leadership.

Update: President Trump ambushes Democrat leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer in the Oval Office, creating a must-see TV gameshow.

  1. “After multiple shutdowns, including the last one that bore the label ‘Schumer Shutdown’ and was quickly conceded by the Democrats, the public is no longer afraid of non-essential services (roughly 25% of the government) being temporarily suspended.”

    Only 25 percent?

In a sane world the US federal government would see to foreign relations, the army charged with keeping the border secure and invaders out, and not much else. Let anybody serious about funding climate change pseudoscience convince California taxpayers to do it, or, better yet, pay for it out of his own pocket.

That could be financed with the sorts of tariffs which funded most of the US government’s operations in the 19th century. Make consumers of imported luxuries pay for the wall.

    1. A “shutdown” may be the best thing for the citizens, who could see the uselessness of government beyond basic services.

Something like an extended postal strike, or shutting down of human rights tribunals and other government “boards.”

Statists should be careful what they wish for; but I for am glad they don’t.

  2. You got to give some respect to Trump.
He is slaying them left and right without merci. It will eventually consume him or it may not, he is a different kind of beast. In the meantime he gets what he wants.
He obviously could not care less what anybody thinks about him or what he does.
This round will please Ann Coulter, she has been hammering him on the subject ever since he was elected.
The characters that are against him don’t know what the hell to do.
You watch Schumer, he won’t look at Trump, like he is afraid. Truth to him is something like a cross to a vampire.
Pelosi is just bumbling, rattling nonsense as she goes along. She though, is safe to do that, the media cartel will edit the uncomfortable bloopers that made her rather famous in non news territory. Sometimes she seems so ignorant, it is appalling that she occupies the position where she is.

These are some kind of masochists that enjoy Trumps insults.

    1. “He is slaying them left and right without merci.”

Couldn’t hold Congress, can’t stop Mueller.

      1. Mueller is already dead investigator walking, culminating in his ridiculous “campaign financing felony” fantasy.

If it were up to me I would get the wall passed, then appoint a special prosecutor, above Mueller, to go into the whole putrid 2016 election mess, including his conduct, especially real Russian collusion, like the Hillary paid for fake Russian dosser, abuses of power around FISA and obvious perjury from the likes of Comey, Brennan, Lynch, McCabe and Clapper.

That is what is happening in the real world, not the false narratives of the left, so you should take note, Unreal.

      2. He obviously is not finished yet.
Read two books on campaigns of Alexander.
        Trump reminds me of Alexander.
Today they could say that he was like the energizer bunny.
Alexander was absolutely relentless in his campaigns.
He was pretty smart, his teacher was Aristotle.
When his soldiers thought they had enough, he would ask who was up to it and led them himself into battle. And the guy drunk every night, come morning he fought.
I’m thinking, Trump must have read the books. He did go to military academy or some such for a time.
The conduct of Trump is very much like Alexander’s, it is uncanny.

Just want to mention to the guy that looks for erudity, go suck a lemon.

    2. “without merci”

      merci: francais for thanks.
well, actually he is getting tremendous merci beaucoup thanks from certain quarters, not that the msm will say a peep on that.

ya, I know Lev, a typo but still, hip hip hooray!! hip, hip, hooray!!

      1. I thought it did not look right I just did not get it in time.
The spell checker agreed with me so I went for it.

  3. Schumer/Pelosi should offer a matching fund deal: $1 of funding for every dollar Trump gets from Mexico.

    1. Andrew, just remember one thing, when hitler, a socialist, started killing, he started with the very people who would have voted for socialism. Just a thought you may want to carry with you as you (ex)pound your lefty stupidity

  4. Watching that exchange live was priceless. First of a kind. Pelosi wanting and asking to discuss this in private, ha, ha, ha.

    1. Sadly (joking), Ken, I was wrong: my forecast the other evening of a Liberal 4-point lead in the weekly Nanos Research Poll has turned out to be…a Tory lead! Wait, what?

There are a hundred reasons why opinion has turned against the boyo (it has, and it’s on the street) and his schtick (it has; I’ll leave it for another day to enumerate them, except for the most important one: under this dude, our country could fall apart in an afternoon, maybe even tomorrow afternoon).

I’ll remind you, if you don’t mind, why Brian Mulroney buried John Turner, in 1984:

      https://www.cbc.ca/archives/entry/mulroney-attacks-turner-in-1984-election-debate

Perhaps Americans have never seen anything like this before, but (I think) it will have similar effect.

Sen. Schumer needlessly raised the non-issue of a “government shut down”, which gave Trump the opportunity to pounce, which Trump did. Just as Canadians viewed Turner as a fool, so will Americans view Trump’s opposition.

And Trump didn’t look much worried about anything else, by my read.

  5. The Wall is never getting built. The Democrats won their blue wave largely on the backs of opposition to it. Today’s House is the most pro-immigration House in 100 years. It’s over, and it probably always was.

    1. Trump should just tell all his followers that it’s already built. They’ll believe him of course, and he’ll save the government like $50 billion.

      1. Trump could tell the DeMarxists he’s already impeached, then they could pretend he wasn’t elected.

  6. Master Showman meets ugly actors.
Pelosi believes in transparency..until she has to perform.
That little act was classic Trump.
I expect even more entertainment from President Trump as the split houses now free him from pandering to the spineless RINOs.
Being free to treat both houses as the Uni-Party that they really behave as,should produce some real interesting runs up the middle.
    Buy more popcorn.

    Hey Unthing.
“It’s scary just how psychotic his cult is.”
Project yourself onto the blank screen much?
News flash, when it is all about you, then it is nothing.
    Less than zero.
