  1. Great article. I agree with it. No military invasion will help, and even though it is painful to watch, the neighbours should close the borders to prevent refugees from leaving. The Venezuelans need to clean up their own mess.

Is Canada following in Venezuela’s footsteps?

    1. “Is Canada following in Venezuela’s footsteps?”

      Without a doubt, Ken.

And the sad thing is, two-thirds of our population doesn’t have a clue that there’s any kind of a problem there. And that’s the kind of ignorance that the socialism bacteria seeks out.

    2. Mothers and children can’t help clean up the mess and, as you say, it is painful to watch.

  2. Hey, it’s socialist paradise with all it’s problems and future is sunny, what’s not to like? Not unlike here at home.
One has to admit Canada has a way to go yet, though it will get there.
The current airhead in Ottawa is working on it as you read this screed.
Socialists will get their way, hell or killing, they know their business and they know how to get there.

Just check the post below, the mean girls. A kid is destroyed because it was established by the ruling class that a man is one of the worst creature on the planet and they are going to fix it.
The international socialists, it’s what they do.
As long as the masses get free stuff, that will be the way.

  3. For so much of the article, Fransico Toro remains clear thinking, as exhibited daily as well at his blog http://www.caracaschronicles.com concise in what he states “will not work” in Venezuela. Pointing out how many countries continue to enable the regime.

When he refers to the USA, to President Donald J. Trump, the response is to mention Trump’s statement of “not going to rule out the military option” and Senator Rubio’s seeming support of this measure. Mentioning it again later (“ill advised revenge fantasy”?) as if he is able to know what Trump’s thinking is here, and as if it was a fait accompli, then dismissing it and saying this won’t work. What would work? Would the UN’s sternly worded letter do the trick? Would only the Ceausescu option work? Having elections failed each time it was tried. Team Chavez / Maduro counts the electronic ballots, with minimal oversight and widespread electronic cheating. Alek Boyd posted online at http://www.vcrisis.com and covered all of the early elections in Venezuela, finding thousands of extra registered voters born on the first day of the month, living well past 120 years old with some living until 160 years. It was miles outside of probability! When Jimmy Cartier’s organization oversaw the mayhem of cheating he’d had enough and rubber stamped Chavez’ legitimacy, His feebleness on this file marches onward.

No economic strategy against Venezuela, short of a blockade, could be as damning as socialism has been, and even then, those blocking food aid to the citizens of Venezuela would be on the front page of every news outlet in the world as if this was “Trump’s doing”. As if he created the entire idiotic and predictable outcome of socialism here. As if the entire country except for the gov’t class isn’t already hungry every day.

I don’t know if a military takeover would be better in the course of a few years outcome, comparing it to the outcome in Libya or Iraq, when those countries had actual militaries and the double albatross of islam, while Venezuela has more of a bloated officer’s club with armed servants. Letting it spiral down the slope is what’s accepted now, and Cuba has been on that route for 60 years while continually infecting other’s democracies. If military intervention is what is on the table and that does eventually become the route taken, then Cuba should be included, with a complete makeover of their 60 years entrenched gov’t apparatus.
*Venezuela couldn’t repel Colombia now, never mind the USA.

Kudos to Trump for mentioning that which needs discussing, while all the other options have failed. Including the idiocy of expecting the UN to function on this file.
Including the idiocy of watching Cuba live on with Communism for 60 years and expecting different results..

  4. “Mentioning it again later (“ill advised revenge fantasy”?) as if he is able to know what Trump’s thinking is here, and as if it was a fait accompli, then dismissing it and saying this won’t work. What would work?”

The Venezuelan people put themselves there. They are the only ones that can get themselves out. The international community can help by sanctions and diplomatic pressure. Military action can take down the government but it can not change the mind of the socialist the same way it can not change the mind of the jihadist.

As long as countries like Canada continue to import copious amounts of oil from that repressive state they enable the corrupt government to continue to deprive the people of the basics of life. Our government is complicit in the deaths of protestors, refugees, the starving and those who are just caught in the vortex of corruption.

    1. “Countries like Canada continue to import copious amounts of oil from that repressive state …” ?

Canada’s total imports from Venezuela = $17.9 million dollars total value. That’s not “copious” by any measure, and not even certain if it includes any oil, as Venezuela’s oil is too high in sulphur content to be refined without routing through refineries able to refine this.

      http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/venezuela/bilateral_relations_bilaterales/canada_venezuela.aspx?lang=eng

Canada didn’t supply the electronic voting machines that the gov’t of Venezuela has used to circumvent actual elections.
None of the sanctions or diplomatic pressures as set forth by Francisco Toro in the above article have been of any consequence, especially the OAS threat. (which Venezuela quit) or any UN stern letters.
All non military attempts = failure… and even worse than that, people say now, “well we tried, so sorry”
Same idiocy as Cuba… “copious idiocy” …

    2. @Smitherzes: Regarding your comment “…it cannot change the mind of a jihadist” Obviously Trudeau thinks one can. Take note of a Conservative Party letter sent out. Not shown is a plea for financial support for the party, I’ll will get around to sending them some money soon. It will be my first political donation in 3 decades.
      ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
It has recently been reported that the Trudeau government is working cooperatively with captured ISIS fighters who want to come back to Canada.
That’s right Ronald, when government officials spoke with an alleged Jihadist fighter, they told him that coming to Canada was an option.
Honestly, I was shocked and disgusted when I saw this report.
The Trudeau government is claiming there is no guarantee ISIS fighters would face arrest upon their return, and yet the Liberals are actively trying to bring these terrorists home to Canada.
The Liberals have shown a preference for “reintegration” over prosecution, but Canadians expect these people to be brought to justice.
These are terrorists who have committed the worst atrocities imaginable.
But the Liberals have done nothing to put these terrorists behind bars.
What’s worse, the Liberals’ justice bill reduces sentences for traveling overseas to engage in terrorism to as little as a fine.
      This is absurd.
They want to bring ISIS terrorists home, give them poetry classes, and just see what happens.
The Liberals never cease to amaze me.
They have the tools they need to hold ISIS terrorists accountable, and to protect Canadians.
It is shameful that in case after case they are unwilling to use them.
A Conservative government, led by Andrew Scheer, would make the security of Canadians a top priority – not the comfort of terrorists.

  5. The US should provide free tickets for all the Hollywood leftist, hell, all leftist poseurs who support the revolution. California would end up almost devoid of anyone but Mexicans.

  6. No Canada is not following in Venezuela’s footsteps. Do not take that as my endorsement of Trudeau and his policies but if we want to avoid a Venezuelan disaster it is critical to understand the cause of the disaster.

I hear conservatives lump welfare states and socialist states together all the time. If you want to discredit socialism, and we do!, it is critical to not lump the likes of Denmark, Norway and Denmark with Cuba, North Korea and Venezuela. The former group consists of market economies with a strong welfare state component. The second group are socialist states. The economic outcomes of these two groups are starkly different. By conflating these groups we discredit conservatives not socialism.

    1. And yet we “enjoy” a health system aligned more with Cuba and North Korea than Scandinavian welfare states and what’s worse, it’s defended and protected from reform by “Conservatives”. I recently resigned from our local EDA board due to my disgust with that sentiment along with their National direction of squishy conservatism.

  7. Good Point Bill.
But I point out this about the Trudeau

1: “I have an admiration for the Basic Dictatorship of China’s Government” (or some such)
2: “Castro was a decent man”
    3: Canada has no Culture.
4: Canada will become a TRANS NATIONAL STATE.
5: Buys KM for near 10 times its value. Nationalization
    6: Carbon TAXATION mandate.
7: New and Onerous Regulations on Business.
8: Fully Anti-Military anything – Sueing Veterans/Buying Junk Aircraft etc etc etc.
9: Puts a SOMALI refugee in as Immigration Minister along side 8 other ISLAMICS whose sole purpose is to ensure M-103 goes through as a precursor to Sharia law. The recites the Shahadda….in a MOSQUE.
10: Opens our Borders and ensures the RCMP is there to carry baggage
11: Fully on Board with the insanity of the UN’s Climate mantra (PROVEN to be and acknowledged by the IPCC themselves as to be soley invested in the Destruction of Western Hemisphere CAPITALISM.)

I’d say that POS is a SOCIALIST & GLOBAL marxist. Should he regain his majority in 2019, we are well and truly destined to end up JUST like Venezuela.
As a vet, I’d see this Fkr hung for TREASON.

    1. Liberals want chaos as it is easier to manipulate the country if the citizens are fighting one another. It’s not just Trudeau, the Liberals are now socialists like the democrats in the states.

    2. As is his brother. We might not hear his name or see him, but he’s there nonetheless. Trudeau Sr. trained his sons well.

    3. so what youre saying steakman, TURDoo is a TURD who
      -shits on working Canadians
      -shits on freedom
      -shits on justice
      -shits on the armed forces
-shits on common sense, inherited decency, democratic traditions

a TURD that shits. how unsurprising. Im looking into election sign regulations and by 2019 election day there might be a pc of 4 X 8 plywood in front of my house reminding voters on the TURDoo ‘legacy’.

  8. Let’s hope that Venezuelans figure this out, but until then leave Venezuela to serve as a useful, grim lesson to its neighbours: “This is what happens when you align with Cuba”.

Fortunately for Canadians – and unfortunately for Canada’s politics – there are relatively few people who truly know what real hunger and poverty is. There are now many millions of people in South America who know what Canadians don’t, and for them and generations who follow the future could be bright.

    1. “Fortunately for Canadians – and unfortunately for Canada’s politics – there are relatively few people who truly know what real hunger and poverty is.”
This is so true. Canadians are so fortunate to be spared even a fraction of the suffering that the average Venezuelan is enduring. By and large Canadians are a spoiled lot besieged by “first world problems”. Canadians howl when faced with the prospect of having to walk a few yards to pick up their mail. Canadian parents piss and moan when their kids have to walk more than a block to get on the school bus. Canadians go into a panic when they can’t connect to wi-fi or their pvr failed to record their favourite show. Canadians lose their sh*t when there’s a one hour wait at the emergency room to have a runny nose administered to. Just imagine the sh*t show that would ensue if there was a toilet paper shortage or the shelves at the local Safeway began to run low.

  9. The other similarity is that now the Canadian government has followed the Venezuela government in being in the narcotics business and the US does not like it in either instance.
Given that Canada Post is the mule for the narcotics, will postal works be banned from travelling to US?

    1. Annnnnnnnndddddd Canada post goes on strike!!!!!!! Nothing like giving a union some leverage again.

      1. @Jane:
Good timing on the union part, this will mess up mail delivery of pot.
Otherwise, who cares. Twenty years ago, a postal strike would caused great inconvenience.
        Now? A big ‘yawn’

  10. The least we can do is force Danny glover and Sean Penn to move there. If anyone deserves to live through the mayhem and suffering it’s them.

    1. 3 times now I have emailed naomi klein via the ‘contact’ page on her web site.
3 times a scripted answer ‘she is doing research’ when I ask for a statement on the CURRENT venezuelan situation. 3 times nada.
the last one I flat out stated I eagerly await her mouth at the next appearance on campus.
goddamn huckster shill for chavezism. a death and ruination cult that defies economics, human psychology and basic physics.

  11. What happened to Venezuela? Simple. Maduro is doing what the Chinese pay him to do—expropriate and drive out the local entrepreneurial class, and then when, not if, the economy collapses, allow the Chinese to grab everything of value for pennies on the dollar.

The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money. Then the other people foreclose on your birthright and sell you as slaves.

    1. Read the article again.
      Cuba.
After 60 years Cuba’s most successful export to date has been the thug apparatus required to keep a population in chains.

  12. Seems to me the article is not simply blaming Venezuela’s woes on socialism. It certainly hasn’t helped but the roots of this disaster, apparently, predate Chavez. Everything is more complicated than a Facebook meme.

  13. I use the degree to which a country embraces socialism, as a rough estimate of the country’s IQ. So I have come to the conclusion that the world is majority stupid. Israel, Canada, US, UK, Germany, … I do not believe there is any country anywhere that does not have a large and successful socialist movement/political party. Even places that survived a socialist experiment, like eastern Europe, still got them.

It is like a hippy drum circle, and we need Cartman to take care of the infestation for us.
