If the individual is not free then the collective is not free.
I think most of those who put the collective above the individual don’t want the collective to be “free” (and I’m not really clear on how free the collective can be.) They either want to be part of the collective because they want to be that part to which the rest of the collective is subject, or they want to be free from personal responsibility, they want the collective to take care of them.
Collectives are unavoidable. Individuals will always find strength in numbers. Concentrating on your strength as an individual is important insofar as if you are strong as an individual you lend strength to the collective. And it works both ways; as long as the collective is strong, it lends strength to the individual.
This is why Canada was a strong nation when we were collectively British.
or me, it’s massive built up irritation, to the point of outright hatred, over being told what to do and not do in minute every fucking second of the day.
The water flow in my shower and my toilet. How I throw away garbage. Where and how and what kind of energy I may buy. Arbitrary and insane driving restrictions. Insane municipal zoning, building and development laws making housing ever more expensive. Streets being constricted and congested for unused bike lanes and rarely used bus lanes.

Most of us here agree with your sentiment, but seem to be fighting a losing battle. However, it must be realized that with increased population density in much of our land, some increased restriction in some areas is necessary, but they generally tend to go overboard.
And how. What creates the kind of people who can’t stand to see other people enjoying life and/or who can’t stop themselves from telling others how to live their lives?
Having to remember to bring my cloth (hemp) shopping bag every time I go to the grocery store … or being forced to PAY 10c for a paper shopping bag … and endure the dagger stares of the eco-leftist shoppers in the queue … is wearing on me. There is virtually not opposition from the media which is understandable. If any one of the journalists, schoolboard members, university faculty or student showed a hint of opposition, they would be out of a job, out of school, counting in seconds.
