Oh, Shiny Prime Minister

The man with the talent for making everything worse.

As Alaska’s congressional delegation worked feverishly last year to achieve the decades-long dream of drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, they came across a formidable opponent: Canada.

The Canadian government was concerned about the pristine wilderness on the country’s Porcupine caribou herd, named for the river that spans its range into Alaska. So its embassy in Washington lobbied U.S. lawmakers to vote against the Republican bid to add a refuge-drilling measure to the tax-cut package.

They lost the gamble. The tax cuts passed and drilling is set to resume after a 40-year hiatus.

Now one lawmaker has a plan to punish the North American neighbor with what amounts to a new tax on hundreds of millions of barrels of Canadian oil imported annually into the U.S.

  1. Wouldn’t that be the icing on the cake to stick it to the anti-resource development prime minister and his puppeteer.

  2. Nine cents a barrel tax increase ($0.09/barrel) will not affect Canadian imports too much. It would be nice to see these carve-outs and special interest welfare acts go away.

    1. For one thing it’s Canadian exports to the US, and that paltry .09 a barrel translates into over one hundred million lost Canadian revenue every year, but who cares? A hundred mil here and a hundred mil there, why pretty soon you’re talking real money! Of course it’s primarily Saskatchewan and Alberta who are the losers, so move along, nothing to see here. Fu(k Canada and everyone who failed at math.

  3. I’m sure Sock Boy sees this new tax as a feature not a bug. Affects Alberta but not Quebec, so Shrug.

  4. I bet Alaska’s Sarah Moose-o-lini had something to do with this! Did you see on her show where she clubbed that fish on their boat? Horrible abusive womyn!

  5. So i have to wonder.
If Bernier’s opposition to supply management was motivation for Canada’s dairy lobby to become temporary CPC members to stop him, what are they prepared to do when Freeland throws them under the bus to protect the auto sector?

  6. When I worked in the oil industry many years ago, someone who was a complete dolt and incompetent would be described as being so dumb that they’d screw up the Lord’s Prayer.

That wouldn’t remind us of anybody we know of, would it?

  7. I don’t think there’s a bigger hypocrite than PM Dressup or a more sanctimonious putz. And there is a giant pantload of smug, self-righteous Canadians always bragging about how they’re so much better than Americans. Its embarrassing.

  8. Beatings of our insolent socialist unproductive entitled self-important neighbors will continue until an acceptable regime change is made. That is all…Carry on.

  9. Why don’t oil companies just straight up, out in the open, collude?

All our pipeline projects have been delayed indefinitely? Gasoline now starts at $25 a liter in Canada; we will not sell it to anyone for a penny less. Diesel? That starts at $500.

We haven’t been able to drill, build, explore, nothing… Looks like these protesters come from Vancouver Island. Gasoline and diesel on Vancouver island now cost $350,000 per liter. And we’ll throw in a Salmon Arm salute for you for free.

Kinder Morgan does have the protection of the law; why should anyone else? I think a surtax of $55,000,000,000 on every tanker that pulls into the St Lawrence is needed as well.

  10. Pierre Trudeau died in his own bed, spared any accountability for his crimes.

Justin will die in an American prison.

    1. Well he’d probably enjoy some aspects of prison life. Like losing at Ookie Cookie.

  11. Stupid always makes things worse. It’s like a written-in-stone rule of the Universe. Stupid means pig-ignorant selfish human interference.
