Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Yup.
I’m pretty sure only EX-liberal MP’s can be federal contractors.
(There used to be a waiting period, but maybe Turdface removed it?)
What’s a corrupt Inuit woman to do?
Arrange for friends, spouses, children and sponsors to get on the gravy train, that’s what.
Yes, we are indeed living through cultural destruction. Conservatives who don’t see the problem with Nolan’s ‘Odyssey’ are either very blind or not really the defenders of Western Civilization that they claim to be.
First, Wilson’s ‘translation’ is utter dog poo (don’t get me started on that abomination; there are ways to make older texts more accessible; I frequently used them with ESL and LD classrooms; not ever reader can access a more accurate translation; you do have to stay honest and truthful to the general themes/characterizations of the original however). Second, Nolan took utter dog poo and somehow managed to make it worse (Homer represents women as having agency MORE than Wilson or Nolan, think about that!) with his odd casting choices and direction (again, I have seen a couple of productions that managed to insert DEI casting without it being so horridly deconstructive, but they weren’t taking on something like the Odyssey and they did appear to at least like the source material). This is made all the more egregious because Nolan has made decent films in the past; this isn’t one of them. He, like that Emerald Fennell woman, gives the impression that he believed he could do one better than Homer — no, no you cannot.
Made that incredibly ‘it’s okay’ movie ‘Troy’ (with all its historical/source material inaccuracies — llamas?) look like a cinematic masterpiece. I advise people to get a copy of the books (Fagle’s translation is quite readable for most. Lattimore and Mendelsohn are perhaps better depending upon your reading needs; there are also Alexander and Hammond…I believe his last name is that).
But no, the schools are reading Wilson…and now they get to see Nolan. And he has Derrida’d Odysseus and Indo-European civilizational artefacts, that did create ours.
Ooooh, but we don’t need the Humanities; they’re worthless — free markets!
Climate ‘science’…
Oh, and by the way:
If you think this doesn’t affect culture on a more “blue collared” level, think of this: Odysseus becomes this shame/guilt riddled, essentially broken, man due to his actions at Troy — the horror, the horror! A man who has basically lost any pride he might have had, a victim if you will.
Because all warriors are basically angst ridden, broken men with no pride, perpetually haunted by their crimes (being a warrior apparently — xenia! xenia! the muppets have learned a Greek word, please clap) — hapless, helpless victims of the fascist state and their own toxic inner shortcomings if you will, with no agency….John Kerry, please stand up.
We have to remember to always tell our boys that fighting is not the way; to be a warrior is to be broken — no nuance please.
Bravo uJane… Bravo! And if I might add … you know your sh*t like only a vanishing few of our educators today.
Now do the Ingall families shame and land acknowledgements … SMH
NTM the deliberate disintegration and mangled repurposing of our historic statuary.
Well thank you. I do try as it is/was my profession. However, there are people far better and younger who have either been turned out of their jobs in academia or worse not even being allowed to get a foot in the door because of institutional rot. And they aren’t being allowed into any of the adjacent fields either (thanks to my academic background I did some work for DNR parks and historical sites; it’s gotten very, very bad).
For…reasons.
But not to worry, the humanities aren’t that important; they’re dying out — ‘free markets’ are the corrective (this wasn’t directed at you)
Oh, you mean the remake of Little House? That’s going to be a winner from the sounds of it; just like the others have been.
I, for one, actually believe strongly that ALL undergraduate degrees be Humanities degrees. Not just PART of another degree … but EVERYONE … FIRST … learn the history of human cultures, literature, and history. As a foundation of their specialty after that.
Trouble is … I know what the college professors would teach. And every student would be better off ignorant or self-educating themselves.
Nolan has taken the prototype of the “Hero’s Journey” cast it through a feminist lens, ruining it, all in order to get himself an Oscar.
