By behaving erratically, and even seemingly “irrationally”, US leaders can outmanoeuvre their opponents and rivals, and put them permanently on the backfoot in fear of the dangerous volatility of American power.

When someone’s stated intention is to deliver nuclear annihilation, then what is the big deal about them lying? Of course, they would lie. Lying is a perfectly reasonable, and expected, thing to do. More likely, Iran will follow a similar path as North Korea. The “Iran Deal” will finally be publicized, including the stupid secret codicils. Public opinion in the US and the Mid-East will be used to demand action. Sanctions will be placed on Iran by the end of the year, and after the North Korean Peace success, only the stupid countries will go against new, effective sanctions.
Iran is already having economic difficulties, and KSA & GCC with Israel (could you imagine thinking this combination even five years ago?) will encourage a revolution against the Mullahs. They may even attack the Revolutionary Guards, Hezbollah and the Shia Militia Mercenaries in Syria to keep them from reinforcing Iran if a revolution starts? Alternatively the US with its KSA, GCC, Egyptian and Israeli allies could negotiate a real denuclearization treaty the conventional way with Iran, as the sanctions threaten the Iranian government stability.
(Assuming that Ms. fFreeland and her EU buddies STFU and STFD, and most importantly, don’t screw things up.)
