  1. Nonsense … the UN has already opined that they should all eat Crickets and slugs. THAT would save Venezuelans from hunger … and “save the planet” at the same time.

  3. Maybe a strict diet of wabbit will kill you but they are easy and cheap to raise. Nice white meat.
    I’ve ate lots of rabbit. Wild and domestic. Had a buddy who made a ‘killer’….oops stew.
    You can raise them in the city and if you take care of business your neighbors wouldn’t have a clue.

  5. I’ve never eaten domesticated wabbits,but shot and ate loads of them when I was a kid on the Prairies.
    There’s nothing like a fresh cleaned rabbit roasted on a stick over a camp fire. I found the meat to be quite dark, like the dark meat on a chicken,and not too tough,but back then I’d eat anything I could shoot with the old Cooey.

  7. When my mother was just a teenager in WWII, a vicious battle raged in her area. Thousands died, those who could, fled. She survived winter in a cabin in the woods, gathering mushrooms under the snow etc. Malnutrition and starvation rear their ugly heads once civil society fails, self inflicted or otherwise.
    Vividly remember her telling us there was nothing left that could fly or hop, and a skinned rabbit looked quite similar to a skinned cat. Don’t ask me how she knew that.

  8. I grew up in what was a mainly Italian neighbourhood in Mississauga, 80 identical small bungalows on the street. Several of our families had detached garages with cages full of rabbits and pigeons. Us kids would all gather round to watch on neck break / chop day. Even better than hide n seek. The Toronto gentry that moved in lately would be horrified to learn what used to go on where they park their BMW’s now

    Venezuela under Maduro is very much like a cartoon. Rabbit hutches for all will not work well in the slums where most of Maduro’s supporters live. Where you gonna put them in your 2 room shack? What are you gonna feed them? Who’s gonna stop your neighbor from stealing them for immediate needs? Crazy.
    It reminds me of Mao’s Great Leap forward where everyone would make steel in their backyard…..

  12. Perhaps they will allow small private plots for agricultural production. I remember in the sixties reading about the Soviets allowing 3% of their landmass for small private farming and it happened to produce 40% of their food. Nothing like a little token rational self-interest to feed the nation.

  17. Your right about the meat color. Wild rabbit has darker meat than the domestic meat wabbit.
    Have a buddy who is a professor at a post secondary school here in AB. Lives in the suburbs….raises rabbits in his garage. Once a month he butchers in the garage. No complaints – but then again nobody knows.

  21. The obvious future, looking a year or 2 down the road-those who are successful at breeding rabbits will be demonized as hoarders-etc.

  22. There isn’t enough grain or hay grown in Venezuela for this to work. They don’t throw out enough vegetables that could be diverted to the rabbit hutch. The back yard of houses are not that large, Caracas is a city of +6 millions mostly without any yards at all. Some suggest feeding them alfalfa pellets? The gov’t doesn’t have enough cash on hand for this program to work longer than a few months. Alfalfa would need to be imported. Everything would need to be imported. Rabbits, the cages, the uff. Todos.

    and that valuable liquid commodity that Venezuela could sell.. more than half of it goes to paying debt to China and neighbors ..
