The military is examining whether compromised computer systems were responsible for one of two U.S. Navy destroyer collisions with merchant vessels that occurred in recent months, Vice Admiral Jan Tighe, the deputy chief of naval operations for information warfare, said on Thursday.

They should have had a man looking out of the window rather than at a computer screen.
The excuse sounds like a line from a Bob Newhart comedy “Don’t tell me admiral let me guess they decided to trust the machinery rather than post watches in the busiest sea lanes in the world”. I’m not sure which is worse the collisions or the excuses.
Its a hardware solution called Windows. You look out them to view your surroundings.
The assumption is that machinery, having been designed, built, and programmed by fallible human beings, will make perfect decisions all the time.
That is a most dangerous, and demonstrably deadly, assumption.
The (Obama) Navy’s mission was focused on fighting the most horrific enemy the nation has ever faced – climate change. Obama’s newly formed Naval “Department of Climate Change Responsibility” has mandated that ALL Naval vessels shut-down their engines (to save the planet) when stationary overnight. We simply didn’t have the time to power-up sufficiently for evasive maneuvers after the proximity alarms were sounded. Naval Commanders simply failed to maintain adequate separation between vessels as needed for engine start-up.
And you think this comment is satire … I don’t.
Blame Obama and his minions for the political direction, but it was Admirals that rubber stamped and implemented it.
Probably takes a little longer to spark up the bio diesel too. I suspect that some of the people that were supposed to be on watch were in a mandatory trans diversity course instead.
ALL Admirals, since WWII, have been political appointees. How ELSE can we end up with a transgendered Navy ?
Has anyone ever heard of a previous cyber attack on a commercial vessel?
If someone was developing the technology to hack a ship at sea, seems to me starting off on a US Navy destroyer is a bit ambitious. Besides, it would take more than one “blind” ship to purposely create a collision of this sort at sea.
…and they aren’t protecting Canada…pity…
Titanic syndrome.
Come on!! IT’S ALL THE FAULT OF THE RUSSIANS!
And nothing to do with a want of basic seamanship.
Colregs Rule 5 Look Out
DUH
Just to be clear, both of these collisions occurred in close waters where the norms of naval practice is to have full bridge crews, heightened watch states and human eyeballs looking in all directions. Ships which have the (relative) nimbleness to get out of anyone’s way are rammed by ships the size of skyscrapers and move at the pace and with the grace of an arthritic elephant. Even if every navigational did not exist or suddenly failed, there are some basic seamanship questions that a bunch of sailors will, sadly, not have any good answers for.
