Dirty Rat

Any day you can spend ten hours standing on concrete, while inhaling the chemical equivalent of nail polish remover, is a good day.

The job’s at about the midway point, so tomorrow is another.

  1. Ahh, a sneak glimpse at Picasso’s canvas.
Just wondering, Kate, how much of this design is predetermined, and how much artistic licence are you allowed in the finished product?
Also, how close to original (mechanically) is this ‘Rat’?

  2. Kate, I recommend you find yourself a piece of inch-thick closed-cell black urethane or rubber foam, and fashion a pair of sandals from it, and use those when standing or walking for hours on concrete. Works for me. Even just tape slabs of the stuff to the soles of your shoes for the duration of the job. Your feet will thank you.

  3. Wonderful, Didn’t know you were still at it. I’ll watch for it at The Hat Drag Strip.

  4. Damn ! I wish I had my own spray booth ! Every time I paint things in the garage, bugs and dust end up in the finish … even when I use cardboard boxes as my makeshift spray booth.
Looks like Kate is experienced with rodents …

  5. Is that a Cutlass Olds?? I’ve seen that car before??
Perhaps in another life, when Detroit muscle ruled, gas was 50 cents a gallon, and there were two separate washrooms in every filling station.

  6. Excellent. Finished product should be stunning.
Hope that Cutlass has the drive train to match the paint job!

  7. Hah ! When I was in HS … my foster mom drove an Olds Cutlass, 4 dr sedan, painted puke olive green. It looked like an old woman’s car. I was less than thrilled that it was the designated “family car” that I would have to drive when I turned 16. But it had 3 chrome numbers on the front quarter panel … 442 OMG ! “Mom” had NO IDEA what she had under the hood … but I learned … really quickly … what that stodgy old sedan could do. To be honest, I have no idea how I made it to my 18th birthday. Luck … and a natural instinct to steer into swerve.

  8. Oh, just 6 cylinder then:-)))
Is that in the 1/4 mile, or flying mile, that this pup can hit 1909MPH?
A golf GTi boba can hit 275 kph in 9.6 seconds in the quarter mile, and that’s with a 2 litre motivator:-)))

  9. .
That would be a rare car , Oldsmobile only made ten 4-door sedans with the 442 option
    .

  10. Don’t you just love the smell of cellosolve and acetone in the morning?
(at least I presume that what you’re shooting is nitrocellulose-based lacquer)

  11. “Dose anyone remember Rat Fink?”
I sure do! I built a ton of his models whe I was a kid, even had a Rat Fink t-shirt, although my mom hated it (dad thought it was cool).
He was a SoCal original and we were proud of him!

  12. I need to check my photo archive … but I am fairly certain it was a four-door AND definitely was a Cutlass Supreme 442
