  1. “This comes as the NDP government plans on phasing out all coal plants — the backbone of power generation today — by 2030 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
In 3 years from now this statement will be a punch-line.

  2. OR
Friendly crony capitalists like Soros, etc, show up,
buy out coal for peanuts and then in a few years
discover some new “expensive” quack miracle
cure to get carbon so clean and tasty you could
eat it for dinner and then ask for seconds.

  3. We look to Venezuela for guidance. (Yay for socialism!) Maybe they will send free heating oil to supplement the solar and other renewable energy during those cold Alberta winters. (Assuming there will be any more winter in Alberta, what with global warming and all.)

  4. Cuckservatives are sheeple. You don’t even have the balls to destroy those who are destroying you. Is it all those transplants from Newfoundland, Ontario and various Third World Countries that have made “Albertans” lose their backbone?

  5. Ceasing to burn coal is possibly one of the most idiotic things that has happened in very long time.
Governments can generally be stupid, and they become even more stupid when they latch onto things like the Great Green Fraud.

  6. …made”Albertans” lose their backbone?
And you are from somewhere superior to Alberta? What wonderful state or country do you reside in? No “cuckservatives” there? How did you manage to destroy those who are destroying you?
Conservatives are human therefore imperfect. The right of centre vote was divided, rightly or wrongly, which allowed the NDP to win. Sort of like how PM Harper was able to get elected for so many years in a liberal/leftist country like Canada – in that case the Liberals and NDP split the vote.
Wherever you’re from it must be a real paradise if the majority are like you. (Sarcasm alert.)

  7. It will be interesting to see how much of the $16 billion comes from Ottawa.

  8. Lesson for all citizens of all provinces, back away quickly from any politician who looks like, smells like or looks like any degree of lefty they will destroy anything they get their hands on.

  9. Some of our coal plants are only a few years old. Why not let existing plants operate for their life span? I don’t understand why the idiots insist on promoting solar and wind which have failed everywhere else. Nuclear and hydro might actually be much closer to coal economically. Global warming is a fraud anyway. Let’s just elect someone who isn’t a fraud next time.

  10. I think you are being unfair to Ontario. Our wind is generating .03% efficiency of its installed base or 4361MW. This has dropped since Wynne left the country so its not all our fault.

  11. Germany Replaces Nuclear with Coal, GHGs Skyrocket
    https://cna.ca/news/germany-replaces-nuclear-coal-ghgs-skyrocket/
In 2013, Germany’s electrical production required a 44 percent rise in coal power. In fact, coal represented 45.5 percent of Germany’s power output, its highest level in 20 years.

In 2013, Germany’s carbon emissions rose 1.8 percent, while European Union emissions fell 1.3 percent.

And the Energiewende hasn’t only increased the amount of atmospheric carbon Germany is producing. It’s increasing consumers’ power bills.
The annual increase in residential electricity rates has accelerated since 2011 when the Energiewende went full throttle. The annual increase is now seven percent, compared with 4.3 percent between 2005 and 2010, according to Eurostat.
The long-term results of the Energiewende experiment are not known. For now it stands as a cautionary tale for governments thinking about replacing low-carbon nuclear energy with carbon-creating fossil fuels.

  12. pls cite your source. is it really that bad??? 3 hundredths of 1 percent?

  13. This may have been humorous exaggeration on Dave’s part. I’m basing this on the part he wrote about wind power dropping since Wynne has left the country.
