Yet more justification for me not getting a new car, buying a $10,000 fridge, or downloading every stupid “must have” app.
COINCIDENCE, NOTHING MORE
Historic 400+ year old food market burns down in Paris. Fire started during the night.

This is no doubt very distressing to people who shop daily in such markets and have bare cupboards.
It appears the 3rd world imports have declared war on France.
Nahhhhh … it’s muh Russia… Russiagate France. ‘Bombing’ civilian infrastructure… just as the media tells us Putin is doing in Ukraine. Hence, there can be NO peace negotiations. France … and hence NATO need to attack Russia!!!

If the internal industrial systems weren’t air-gapped from the Internet, then this is 100% on the corporate IT team.
I once worked for a chemical processing plant and the first week I asked them what their biggest single problem was, and the answer was “the plant techs have figured out that the dashboard on the monitoring station is just a web page, and they keep opening a new tab and surfing porn all shift instead of watching the dash.”
When I asked them why in the hell the control station for the system that literally makes poison gas was allowed to connect to the Internet, they didn’t have an answer.
There is a lot of rank incompetence in this industry, which means that the small number of really smart and malicious people in it are wolves among the fold.
Our corporate IT guy stole $1.5M from the company I worked for. Never recovered any money .., he spent 2-1/2 years in jail … got out and is living large! You should give it a try?
I’ve never had the kind of access I’d need for embezzlement, although I’ve certainly been tempted a few times to leave behind a deadman switch that would burn the entire system to the ground if I were abruptly fired.
But ultimately it’s not worth it. Reputation is everything in this business, and word gets around. And if you’re really, really good, things will decay quickly without you anyway and the same thing will happen.
geeks are obsessed with toys.
in large part they want to ‘see what it can do’ and move on having shared bragging rights etc.
my observation since about 5 years into my IT career, the geeks AND bosses lack the instinctive awareness and caution that *there are those with malice intent* who will utilize the newfound technology and know how to commit fraud. and a LOT of mayhem for bragging rights. remember ‘the golden age of computer viruses’?
it is still far to prevalent even decades in. aka THEY REFUSE TO IMPLEMENT PROTECTIONS AND GUARDS.
eqifax a HUGE credit agency was HACKED despite the FTC advising them they were vulnerable. see whut l mean?

My favorite story about things being too connected was the casino in Macao that had the personal information on their high rollers stolen by hackers.
It turns out the way the hackers got in was that the casino had some huge tropical fish tanks in the lobby, and the maintenance people wanted to easily monitor their status, so the fish tank heaters and temperature gauges were wireless and connected to the internet so they could be checked and adjusted from a computer in the back office.
Le fromage! Le fromage!!!
Thankfully my wood stove is air-gapped. LOL
Sometimes there is a fine line between “can we?” and “should we?”
Not in this case.
I’d love to watch the meeting this company has between its accountants, lawyers, and engineers. Who gets the blame?
Never mess with the French (France).
