It’s Time to Put Down the Old School Traditional Conservative Establishment

With the National Review’s hit piece on Donald Trump, it because apparent to me not only how ineffective this group has been for the past three decades, but how out of touch they are from the political reality on the ground. They, eerily similar to their leftist academian counterparts, pine and pontificate haughtily thinking penning one more piece in the WSJ or one more interview on Fox News will somehow convince millennials not to vote in more of their own financial slavery, or get women to realize there isn’t a war on them by white male republicans. But the problem is, quite simply, their time is over. And I don’t mean that in a leadership way. I mean that in a literal way.
These guys are old. Their lives are over. Ann Coulter like Jennifer Aniston WAS hot. And the battle is no longer about what kind of America THEY are going to live in (they’ve already lived in it – a failing one). The battle is now ours and what we want America to become. And thus it is time to relieve the traditional conservative establishment.

  1. In the last Canadian election Harper allowed the sissy manchild to set the agenda. I don’t think Canadians wanted shiny pony’s 10,000 terrorists but the sound bite worked. The sissy boy was on the attack and Harper was on the defence – a sure path to defeat.

  2. The Captain makes some good points, not all, but some. The Reps don’t have to dump the religious right, just tone down their rhetoric before each election,as Harper did here. That IS a lot more difficult in the U.S.,though, as they seem to always be in election mode.
It appears the Republicans are about to do the same as in’08 and 2102, beat each other to death on national television, then choose the candidate most acceptable to the Old Republican Establishment the Captain speaks of so well.
    Result: President Hillary Clinton.
Our Conservative movement in Canada seems similar to the Republican establishment, fighting today’s battles by 1950’s rules. And it’s always the fault of the voters, nothing the Party or our elected reps ever did that caused another loss. Yep, it’s them stupid OTHER voters. We sound like losing hockey fans blaming “the Ref”.
Civilization can’t afford another milquetoast Republican candidate, they need an un-pc asshole who can get elected.

  3. Scar, sadly I think you are absolutely correct.
Harper was effectively abandoned by many of his closest advisors at least a year prior to the election but, being a decent man, he chose not to sack them. His loyalty was solid. The whisper campaign against him started at the highest levels of the CPC, some whom have left after the defeat and some who remain.
I believe Stephen Harper was exhausted and his confidence undermined by this cabal, which accounts for his less than good showing during the campaign. The media, never supporters, were probably made aware of the erosion of his leadership by these petty apparatchiks. Shame on them all.

  4. To prove how ignorant the 22 ‘National Review’ gang members are, they’re now dumping all over Trump’s supporters, like Bret Stephens did.

NRO itself has become the very caricature it paints of Trump. All the once-necessary publication has is insults as opposed to ideas — as though pomposity itself is argument enough. Don’t you understand, if the rubes could quote Thomas Aquinas like us snobs, the rubes would know what is best for them!
Apparently it is unforgivable that the hoi polloi are simply too busy going about the business of keeping our world turning to have the time to read “Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire”; too busy fighting our wars, unplugging our toilets, fixing our cars, processing our food, delivering our heating oil, and working three part-time jobs.
The Unwashed have, however, read enough to know that Democrats never do this — never attack their own voters like NRO and the rest of the Establishment have this year.

  5. I still think Harper after getting his majority should have gone balls to wall and changed everything he could within the first two years of his mandate. He would’ve taken flack from the media and then he should’ve announced his retirement in the third year and handed the reins to somebody who was more “likeable” like Peter MacKay. Now, all you stalwarts go on about Red Tories, but here’s the thing MacKay’s hands would’ve been tied and could not have torn down the new regulations. On top of that…he’s a tall, good-looking guy (yes, this was a major advantage Trudeau had over Harper among female and gay voters), athletic, has a good-looking wife (an immigrant to boot–not a pur laine–probably worth a lot of votes from the urban immigrants) and had cute babies to put in front of the camera–while Harper had dorky teenagers (I’m not disrespecting his kids–but teenagers, especially boys are not camera friendly). Furthermore, we know that Maritimers love their “sons from down home”…he would’ve brought the Maritimes (at least NS and NB) to the Conservatives. In effect, while it may not have been a majority…it definitely would’ve been a strong minority Conservative government. If you want to go on about substance all I need to do is point out that MacKay has more substance and experience in leading this country than the Dauphin.

That didn’t work out so well when the Harkonnens tried it.

  7. The BS gets deeper & stinks like Sh#T… Hillary can’t even get a core group behind her…lying twit. She has absolutely a zero chance in the general….even Bloomberg knows they are done unless they can takeaway the middle from Trump
The establishment of both parties have always taken turns winning the WH.. 2016 is the Republican turn & they know that even the jelly-man Kasich could win. It is unfair not to let them pick, behind the curtain, the candidate.
Trump is not bound by the Crony establishment’s, of both parties, and all their inside deals are mute.. They will control nothing in a Trump WH
BTW: Democrats & Fox personalities are mostly Lawyers… to dam many are trained as cockroaches… Clintons, Obama,…Kelly girls… Everyone should know that Lawyers are resources (like janitors) and not much good for CEO leadership

  8. I vaguely remember reading this in the 60’s. It was “Don’t trust anyone over 30.” And to a large extent it gave us the problems we have now.
You need to figure that there is a difference between the Republican Establishment and conservatism.
“the conservative movement has been pursuing this spineless pussy-footing strategy of appeasement and reason for the past 30.” There are a number of conservatives who are not supporting the Republican Establishment. That’s why the polls show the top 2 or 3 candidates are GOP outsiders. Coulter, for example is supporting Trump.
I wish you well, but you’ll need to improve your platform to have meaningful success. For one, getting married and having kids is the only way a society and culture can survive. Re: “millions of people were killed, tortured, and slain”. In the absence of Christianity this will only get worse.
    Cheers,

  10. As much as the Captain regularly amuses me with his hardcore brand of Capitalism (of which I subscribe) it seems as though everything he writes has a real Gyno-phobic feeling to it. He must have been really hurt by women in his life. Maybe an absent mother, or repeated episodes of unrequited love, or being dumped and humiliated by prior girlfriends .. I would take him a lot more seriously if he didn’t constantly whinge about modern women. Maybe he should look at himself for the answer ? I am not advocating that he become an effeminate Alan Alda … but just a little more understanding for the opposite sex. He kinda creeps me out when moaning constantly about modern women. Don’t get me wrong … I agree with most everything he believes about the feminization of men and the corresponding masculinization of women … but he is starting to sound like the serially-jilted buddy who walks around blaming all of womanhood for his personal problems.

  11. By their actions you shall know them.
    Right, Left parasites are parasites.
Those who gain their sustenance from the efforts of others.
    The elites are parasites.
Elitism is the con they sell, those too busy working to concern themselves with self preening and scams.
Trump, no matter what else, has a demonstrated history of functioning in the real world.
Doing whatever is necessary to get the deal done.
Without selling his family and friends down the river.
Few “professional” politicians can honestly say that.
As a poison pill to the kleptocracy destroying North America, Trump is perfect, if he follows through.
He knows how the politicians and bureaucrats operate, better than so many idealists and do-gooders.
We are not perfect, neither were the founding fathers.
Looking for the perfect “conservative” is madness.
The past Republican offering for potential President have been bland, lacking fire and realism.
Surrendering to your enemies, such as our media, does not make anyone respect you and seems to leave real small government voters to stay home.
Why vote? If the choice is big government 1 or big government2 .
    Human nature has not changed.
The parasitic overload is destroying our civilization.
As always, the push back will be nasty.
For there is no negotiation possible with parasites.

  12. relieve? I thought he said reLIVE. lol !!!
welcome to the world of politics.
myopic ideologists everywhere. common sense, not so common. and ‘devil’s advocates’ ferreting out glaring flaws in the latest ideologically driven legislation?
    extinct.
you betcha. solve one problem by creating thousands more smaller problems.

  13. Yea let’s abandon our principals and become Progressive Conservatives, no thanks they are as repulsive and corrupt as their liberal counter parts.

  14. Thanks Gord Tulk, I agree with you. Abandoning your principles isn’t a good idea, at least in a leadership race. The question is what to do in a general election? Trump is an opportunistic loud mouth and probably a brilliant business man. He’s not a conservative. So, in the field of republicans trump is my last choice. In a presidential election with the choices being Hilary or Trump, I choose Trump.
Reminds me of the BC provincial election. I held my nose and voted Clark because I couldn’t bear the thought of a Dix govt. right thing to do? I dunno? Thoughts anyone?

  15. I think we only see real change with a Cruz or even a Rand Paul sort of presidency. With Trump, it’s more or less the same deal as any other mainstream bipartisan candidate, the rhetoric is just to lull the unwary into a false sense of security.
Trump has no real conservative credentials at all. He certainly seems like an opportunist who has determined that he can get elected by opposing Hillary Clinton and everything left of centre. But how much will he really do if elected? My guess is that we will see all kinds of pensionable retreads in top positions and only minor cosmetic changes.
Ted Cruz is the best bet for real change. He isn’t fooling around with his brand of conservatism.

  16. “He certainly seems like an opportunist who has determined that he can get elected by opposing Hillary Clinton and everything left of centre. But how much will he really do if elected?”
There is plenty of evidence that Trump palled around with the Clintons, they’re all of them …elites.
Anyhow, I picture President Trump appointing Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.
You know, just for old time’s sake.

  17. Maybe not, but the destruction south of us these last 8 years has progressed unimpeded and gone swimmingly for the america-hating POTUS. He just has more charisma than the Baron.
Regardless, a vote for Shrillary is a vote for Beast Rabban. But he’d look better in his pantsuit.

  18. the National Review is not what it used to be, before WFB’s passing. It once had a sense of humour, and that is sadly lacking! Although there are parts of Donald Trump that I like, I don’t for a moment consider him conservative. His pretend religiosity is a joke – he is not at all pro-life and his attempts at sounding Evangelical is ludicrous! Personally, I like Marco Rubio, but I know he is too young, perhaps too naive, and too good to be true, but there is something about his youth that is very refreshing. Lets face it, anything would be better than that Clinton woman.

  19. Good post by CC. My personal preference is for Rand Paul, but Libertarians have not done well in elections. Right noe the Republicans control congress and they’ve been totally useless. They’re a classic example of that major conservative failing; not showing up to riot
Trump is appealing and I have many concerns about how he’d be as POTUS. I can’t see him being any worse than the chimp in chief. The whole sclerotic establishment of entitled crony capitalists and traitorous globalists needs to be eliminated. The neocon demonization of Russia needs to stop as it appears that this group is willing to risk WWIII to further their globalist agenda. Hitlery will likely lose to Sanders and, if he wins then the US will become another Venezuela. Right now it looks like Trump is the only reasonable choice. If he turns out to be another statist dictator, that’s when it’s time to use the power granted to the people by the 2nd amendment.
