    But his “non-appointment” unlikely has anything to do with that. No, I strongly suspect internal Liberal dynamics at play here: the scion of a decidedly white Anglo-Saxon Protestant “Upper Canadian” military family is perhaps not diverse enough for the new and sunny world we now live in.
    That or Sajjan makes an optically useful place-holder right now and Andrew can hop in the seat after a cabinet shuffle or two.
    We’ll have to wait and see.

  7. I thought that would make him a shoe-in for the Defence Ministry, given that a lot of Liberals don’t have have a high opinion of the military.
    But I didn’t know a non-white ex-soldier had been elected, too. Lt.Col Sajjan may have been an excellent soldier, and he may turn out to be a good defence minister, but that doesn’t mean that’s why PM Trudeau chose him for this appointment.

  13. Right on Liz! i’ve been at work all day…checking this post occasionally…lol. You all sound like the crowd at a roadside crash and you just can’t take you eyes off the mess. I have been totally free of all things Liberal for 2 weeks now…no CBC, no CTV, no G&M…nada, zippo….occasionally pick up the Toronto Sun will the assurance that they are not feeding the Justin Kardashian fan club.
    It’s very freeing, and good for the health. I highly recommend it.
    Local news mentions that our (Lib) MP did not make it to the cabinet. Anthony Rota is an experienced MP, is fairly intelligent and well spoken. My sense is that Trudeau would not want him in the same room….for obvious reasons.

The Swedish woman, the only one of them who has done military service, was replaced last year by a man with more appropriate qualifications (like the other three, he hasn’t served.)

Still when you consider they just elected a ski instructor and drama teacher as PM and cabinet boss, why is it a surprise? This just flows logically from Jr’s appointment; he surrounds himself with people not much smarter, while the real decisions are made by the back room handlers.

  20. It’s interesting Trudeau has appointed a woman (Patricia Hajdu) to head up the new stand alone “Status of Women” department. Since counting vaginas is the sole raison d’être of the department, a man would have been better qualified, and a much more diverse choice. No?

  21. While I’ve found most of the Cabinet appointments to be, um, entertaining, I will admit to being 100% behind the appointment of Harjit Sajjan (Vancouver South) as the new Minister of National Defense.  Never hurts to have a vet in that portfolio.
    I only hope he’s got the stones to push back the first time it’s suggested by his Cabinet colleagues that DND take budget cuts to support various whack-a-doodle pet projects some of the others (including the PM) might have.  Even ignoring our obligations to our allies and any actual conflicts we might find ourselves in world-wide, DND needs a certain amount of baseline capability simply to be a first responder of some note during an international humanitarian disaster.  Love ’em or hate ’em, the Conservatives were right to shell out for the C-17 Globemaster; without heavy-lift capability (and the ability to keep it up and running), all our moral posturing about being a force for good in the world won’t mean squat if we have to go back to begging a ride from the Americans or Russians.

    How do I deal with it?? Simple. Say I’m dealing on a new fridge. I e-mail the company and tell them straight out. ”If I see it advertised on CTV, I ain’t buying it.” Unlike CBC, CTV can’t support itself without corporate advertising. I’m fed up of the Harper bashing.
    Lets get real, we can’t change who PM Trudeau appointed to his cabinet. However he has made it clear that he wants more open government, then he he needs to silence his sock puppets over at CTV.

  25. Couldn’t agree with you more. My major beef is that Harper only turned the dial back a bit considering he had a majority. He was too cute by half. The vast progressive regime was left largely intact, simply waiting for the next prog to step in. The libs will educate us on how to pound a majority into everybody’s face …unlike Harper, they will be ruthless in destroying all of Harper’s legacy. I give them 2 years and it’ll be as if there never was a CPC government.
    And finally, Harper should’ve resigned 6 months ago. It’s almost impossible even for liberals to remain in power as long as Harper was in … and they have the media. It was arrogance and an unwillingness to let someone else try. As a result the desire for change, any change, overwhelmed the CPC. Harper had become toxic.

    Watch this portfolio carefully! It is charged with changing the electoral process from “first past the post” to probably proportional representation (or ranked ballot). The party had some faithful stalwarts who worked hard for eons, did all the grunt work and the stumping for votes, only to be shunted aside for the brainless Dauphin because of his looks, charm and last name, and now shunted aside for these token female appointments to his cabinet. Identity politics must leave its scars on those who are the backbone of the party but don’t count in this brave new world.
