I used to believe the old saw that anyone claiming to want to save the world is using it as an excuse to control it. In the case of this woman, I have to eat some crow. You have to understand the absolute ruination of the soul that comes along with having a severely retarded/autistic kid. Day after day, there’s no letup. Imagine having a baby, in diapers, for twenty years. And he hits, he bites, he screams, he breaks stuff.
You’d be completely desperate for -anything- to help.
People like me who work in rehab, we see this stuff. Desperate parents, desperate families. It doesn’t bother me, because it’s not my pain. If I make the patient feel a little better for a little while with some kind of treatment, they’re happy. Because we all know there ain’t nothing in this world going to fix that kid.
There is a particular kind of mentally ill individual who gets off on helping. They feed on it. I’ve met a few. They’re usually women, energetic and “caring” in that sickly manic way that makes you want to hit them. We didn’t get along.
Nightingale vampires. Beyond revolting, but usually untouchable due to hens closing ranks in the hospital hen house. The rest of the beeotches in the place may think she’s a disgusting pervert, but let a man look at her funny and they run out the cannon.

A woman I know quite well, a Vietnamese lady, has a 16-year-old son who is autistic. I guess severely, although he doesn’t bite or wear diapers and he is able to acknowledge people. Moderately severely? He’s her only child. The family is hardly well off, and there’s only the three of them. The central object of her life is to keep him occupied. Summer camps, after-school activities, (I’ve tried to teach him to swim, with very limited success; I’ve repeatedly offered to do it for free but she won’t have it), ferrying him too and from one thing or another and etc.
She’s one of the most uncomplicated, cheerful people I’ve ever met. She is a saint. I don’t doubt for a minute that if I were in her shoes… honestly, I have no idea.

I worked as a behavioral specialist for about three decades as well as taught Master’s level classes in applied behavioral analysis at National University. I’ve worked hands-on up close and personal with hundreds of autistic kids and their parents ofer the years.
FC is a scam. Period. The parents fall head-first into it (among other scams like nutrition) because they are desperate for *anything* to help or blame.
I’ve coined the phrase “autistic parents” to signify the massive roadblock to my students that these parents so often are. I’d say that fully 75% of them will not listen, or simply refuse to implement very basic Skinnerian principles vis-à-vis their charges.
It got to the point that, in the latter years of working with the overall DD population that I simply turned down “autistic families”.
They are simply too much a royal pain in the ass.
