Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

What They Say About SDA
"Smalldeadanimals doesn't speak for the people of Saskatchewan" - Former Sask Premier Lorne Calvert
"I got so much traffic after your post my web host asked me to buy a larger traffic allowance." - Dr.Ross McKitrick
Holy hell, woman. When you send someone traffic, you send someone TRAFFIC.My hosting provider thought I was being DDoSed. - Sean McCormick
"The New York Times link to me yesterday [...] generated one-fifth of the traffic I normally get from a link from Small Dead Animals." - Kathy Shaidle
"You may be a nasty right winger, but you're not nasty all the time!" - Warren Kinsella
"Go back to collecting your welfare livelihood." - Michael E. Zilkowsky
Liberals are idiots!
I think that sums it up.
I think we should just stand back, hand the liberals the gun – then the bullets…and let them just shoot themselves in the foot with stuff like this. Better yet – help them reload so they can put a few through their balls too!
A raised minimum wage would actually be a good thing but not in the way the cretins and Marxists think. First, it would wipe out the lower class. With no jobs, the swarms of low skill/low IQ illegal immigrants would turn around and go home. Our own home grown vibrants would have to reconsider their work ethics once the money for welfare dried up. The fast food chains with their unhealthy fare would go out of business as would the pesky baristas and filthy hipsters that infest slop chutes like Starbucks, HAR HAR HAR!
At some point all the liberals and stupid people would learn that politicians can’t create wealth with the stroke of a pen … and maybe they might go back to work at that point. But what do I know? I am just a baby killing heartless conservative.
Odd. I feel a sudden need to tie a flat chested, homely feminist with a bad haircut to the railroad tracks…
Conveniently omitting that he is now renting out his own home to make ends meet.

Why does the 20th Century Motor Company come to mind?
Same story, different twist.
Wages should reflect productivity, not some unrealistic dream.
We should check back in again next April after a year of this progressive policy. We can interview the Bankruptcy Administrator and any of the remaining employees.
This will be a case study for serious business students.
“Odd. I feel a sudden need to tie a flat chested, homely feminist with a bad haircut to the railroad tracks…”
May I suggest Kathleen Wynne?
If the minimum wage was $70,000/year,I’d go back to work: “Big mac, fries, coffee? That’ll be $148 please”.
In my old job, well, they simply couldn’t afford to pay me.
“A fool and his wealth are soon parted” sprang to my mind when I first read about this. Rather than just paying the people he had that much money, he should have said he wants to build a staff all worth the 70,000 he wants to pay out.
Hipster economics.
he should have said he wants to build a staff all worth the 70,000 he wants to pay out.
Excellent point. At a minimum wage of $70,000 he should have the best people within several hundred miles working for him. Of course, to do that he would have to clean house and cut the dead weight. It could create hyper competition for top talent in the area. But, alas, he sees this as a welfare program promoting a living wage. He will pay his people more and their productivity will likely fall. They will entrench themselves within the organization and make it more expensive to fire the incompetent, the recalcitrant and the just plain lazy.
He has created a major problem for himself. How do you reduce everyone’s wage to stay in business? You don’t. He owes his brother some serious coin.
I wish I could remember the name of the company but a common case study is the one where a business owner decided to keep paying his employees when the factory burned down. He went bankrupt too.
Running his business from the heart just like Trudeau wants to run our economy. But vwhere is our John Galt to say he will put an end to this once and for all?
Oh, that twit. What about him and his ex-business?
21 trackers on the NYT page, BTW.
Sorry Dan but your idea was first run as an experimental model of altruist enterprise in Ayn Rand’s opus Atlas Shrugged – it didn’t work there either and the Twentieth Century Motor Company had the advantage of being a major producer of high demand tangible goods and inventor of the better mouse trap, but none of that could save the company from the rapacious bickering of entitled employees in its experimental collectivist operational model.
Dan runs a value added service – His customers may want to keep an eye on the quality of his product as more and more of his time is taken up with employee bickering over “from each according to his ability to each according to his needs”. Then he can say “who’s John Galt”.
I like him.
At least he is committing economic suicide with his own money, well OK his brothers too.
I only wish more progressives would test their superior wisdom with their own money.
Instead of throwing endless hours of taxpayers productive effort at ideas so stupid even liberals will not voluntarily fund them.
Taxes need to be voluntary.
Perhaps a bare bones compulsory flat tax, then all extras optional.
Except for a massive local tax on do-gooders.. I’m thinking 155% of their gross.
Something about this doesn’t smell right. The brother launched a major lawsuit seeking monies he claims he was owed after Gravity wiped out its substantial cash reserves with this stunt? I’m not buying it. Businesses don’t like keeping lots of liquid cash around precisely because it makes them targets for opportunistic legislation. Older bro launching a lawsuit after the cash is gone looks like he wants to destroy the company, which makes no sense.
I’m almost wondering if the entire point of the salary stunt wasn’t to simply deplete the cash reserves to the point where the older brother drops the suit because there’s no money in the company left to pay him.
Here’s another idiot pricing himself out of business.
http://www.breitbart.com/california/2015/08/17/california-15-minimum-wage-30-per-pizza-massive-fail/
Even though businesses with less than 56 workers are exempt from the $14.44 rate and do not have to raise their wages to $15 until 2018, Vic Gumper, who owns Lanesplitter Pizza, with outlets in Berkeley, Oakland, Albany and Emeryville, decided not only to bite the bullet but swallow it, paying his workers $15 to $25 an hour while eschewing tips or raising prices.
He advertised his $30 pizzas and other food items as “sustainably served, really … no tips necessary,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
Sales at Gumper’s locations have plunged 25% in the last few months; some of the locations now force workers to skip their lunch hours.
Gumper admitted, “The necessity of paying people a living wage in the Bay Area is clear, so it’s hard to argue against it, and it’s something I’m really proud to be able to try doing. At the same time, I’m terrified of going out of business after 18 years.”
When you destroy the connection between what you put into a job and what you get out of it, the end is not long in coming.
I’m good with what Price did. It’s his money (although his brother disagrees). As far as I know, he’s not getting government subsides, so let him do what he wants. From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs has not proven to be a sustainable business model so far. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
