  1. Oh my…I wonder how the hipsters are going to feel about wind and solar power generation when their internet connection is threatened..?..

  2. It’s the massive amount of video! Somewhere I read that netflix accounts for something like 50% of internet traffic.

  3. So we may have a blackout just like the one coming to Ontario when people and business and industry cannot afford the outrageous electricity costs caused by the Queen of Green Crap premier’s stubborn commitment to wind ans solar power and powerful need for higher taxes, including her carbon tax.

  4. A very poorly-written article. A “professor” is quacking that fiber optic cables are at capacity, “but if we put down a second cable, it doubles the cost”. That’s nonsense. In any other case, pipelines, electrical grid, highways, increasing capacity lowers the cost per unit of the commodity being moved.

  5. Translated from lefty-junk science to English this means the internet is a fast acting media which is unable to be hobbled by their attempts to stifle opposition to their deceptive narratives – therefore we scientists (like Monty Python) say it will blow up – you don’t want blowing-up things in your home so we scientists say the internet is bad for you – regulate it or ban it.

  6. about 10 years ago it was due to dot com catastrophes overbuilt by about 90%, its finally caught up .
I remember talking to our IT guy and he said on the internet there was about 90 to 95% spam floating back and forth about p nis enlargement and vi agra

  7. I know, I know! Put government in charge. That will fix everything. (/sarc)

  8. Good God, what a total pile of techno-babble BS.
“In the space of one hundred and seventy-six years the Lower Mississippi has shortened itself two hundred and forty-two miles. That is an average of a trifle over one mile and a third per year. Therefore, any calm person, who is not blind or idiotic, can see that in the Old Oolitic Silurian Period, just a million years ago next November, the Lower Mississippi River was upwards of one million three hundred thousand miles long, and stuck out over the Gulf of Mexico like a fishing-rod. And by the same token any person can see that seven hundred and forty-two years from now the Lower Mississippi will be only a mile and three-quarters long, and Cairo and New Orleans will have joined their streets together, and be plodding comfortably along under a single mayor and a mutual board of aldermen. There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact.

  9. “There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact.”
    Amen to that, Mr Clemens.

  10. Since when do you call a Pre-School teacher professor? Now I know why I flunked grade four!

  11. “In just 20 years, if usage rates continue, all of Britain’s power supply could be consumed by internet use.”
The stupid, it burns with the heat of a thousand suns. Exponentials are not linear!
Does anyone recall their bandwidth 20 years ago? That was top capacity for 20 years ago. It’s always maxxed out. If it wasn’t, telecom companies would lower their prices to get more people using their service until they did run at maximum capacity, and then they’d add more capacity.
Moore’s law isn’t just about the speed of computers doubling every 18 months. The cost of computation halves every 18 months. That includes the cost of the energy needed. My laptop can do billions of floating point operations per second, and uses milliamps of current to do it. The voltage used in computers went from 5V 30 years ago to 3.3 Volts and now it’s down to 1.6 Volts in many applications. In 20 years we’ll be using nanoamps and nanovolts to do a billion calculations, and that will take a nanosecond.
The truth is, nobody knows anything about the world twenty years from now. Take a look at news footage from 20 years ago – in particular, the Today Show in 1994:

But just watch the socialists jump on this as a reason for the UN to take over the internet.

  12. Now we get to the real point of the article:
“‘The public needs to decide whether they want to use their precious wind turbine electricity on electric cars, or on more internet.
‘We need to start this discussion now.'”
I vote more internet. Even they know that there is no way their unicorn fart schemes are going to power the future.
