The most widely used measurements of Arctic ice extent are the daily satellite readings issued by the US National Snow and Ice Data Center, which is co-funded by Nasa. These reveal that – while the long-term trend still shows a decline – last Monday, August 25, the area of the Arctic Ocean with at least 15 per cent ice cover was 5.62 million square kilometres.
This was the highest level recorded on that date since 2006 (see graph, right), and represents an increase of 1.71 million square kilometres over the past two years – an impressive 43 per cent.
Other figures from the Danish Meteorological Institute suggest that the growth has been even more dramatic. Using a different measure, the area with at least 30 per cent ice cover, these reveal a 63 per cent rise – from 2.7 million to 4.4 million square kilometres.

So?
What difference does it make?
square km? don’t the MSM only report in football fields , tennis courts , Leonardo Decaprio’s footprints.
Leo’s actual feet? His carbon footprint would be far too large to act as a measuring device for that.
Cripes. A year old! Didn’t the earth go through a years worth of CAGW by now?
But but but but….Climate Change!!! I mean Science Denier!!!! Agh!!!! It’s thin ice!! There’s deep arctic melting going on we can’t see!
170 years ago, Franklin made it half way through the Arctic and with a little luck might have made it through. Maybe things haven’t changed all that much.
Isn’t this piece from last year, Aug 2014???

UN scientists warn time is running out to tackle global warming
· Scientists say eight years left to avoid worst effects
· Panel urges governments to act immediately
As Mike just pointed out, I don’t think we need be getting our shirts in a knot about a “news” story from last August. I was just over at WUWT, and although the complexity of the graphs there are largely beyond my grasp, the trend lines sure seem to be downwards [not that there’s anything wrong with that]. Let’s just say I won’t be booking a June cruise from Hudson’s Bay to Japan anytime soon, but neither will I expect the warmists to fold up their tents and admit that they’ve been crying wolf on this topic.
They need to keep Al Gore and Greenpeace away from the arctic their Hot Air could jepordise the place
And of course they always use 1979 to start measuring from, which happens to be the year ice peaked.
If they had used 1975 as the start year, a year where ice was at very low levels, thentehcuere current ice levels would show a stunning increase.
Cherrypicking your data points . . . because when your storyline doesn’t support your scam, you can adjust the presentation to con the rubes.
As Mike pointed out, this is from 2014. 2015 is a mixed picture. After freezing up very fast, Arctic ice extent slowed significantly in April. As a result, Arctic sea ice had a very low maximum extent in 2015…..the lowest in the 1979 to 2015 time frame. Does this mean anything. Well, maybe. Who knows. Every year seems to be unique. The minimum extent is what is most closely watched however. That won’t come until early September.
Meanwhile at the other pole, antarctic ice extent is the highest since ….. well who knows as readily available info only goes to 1979. In that time frame, it’s the highest ever at this point in the climb to maximum extent. Will it continue to be the highest ever? Who knows. Every year seems different.
Any sensible person will rejected this patriarchal, racist and cisgender tripe from the Daily Mail. The best source of information on this topic is still Al Sharpton, I mean Al Gore.
I think we were supposed already had a 5 meter sea level rise by 2012 , it’s less than 1cm in a century
It is interesting to think of the Arctic in terms of heat loss.
Ice is an insulator. An ice covered Arctic loses less heat than an Arctic full up with ice.
If you think global warming is a problem you should be rooting for less ice and more heat radiating out into space. If you, like me, think that global warming has paused for 18+ years would be rather happier with more ice and less heat vanishing.
A two degree increase in temp would be survivable and in many cases quite pleasant, two degrees the other way would have serious and deeply unpleasant consequences.
Killer Skuas gun weilding pengions and rabid polarbears GREENPEACE NOT WELCOME
Arctic ice extent as measured by satellites began in 1979. That’s why the average starts that year. It’s not cherry picking. How was the ice extent measured in 1975 without satellites?
The 2015 ice extent maximum was pretty low but the current level looks very average right now.

As was demonstrated in 2014 it looks like British school children will know what snow is for a very long time.
Greenpeace ship got trapped in the arctic ice last year that was so funny
