cgh, your comment about Kate losing commenters got me to thinking about other sites. in some areas comments are way down even though site traffic is up. one site I regularly visit is townhall.com. they recently went to facebook for their comments and their comments have dropped off. I think what we are seeing is bit chill brought on by ignorant bureaucrats threatening people who post online comments.
I strongly sympathise with Alpha Pig but in the end, Paul is absolutely right.
Voting isn’t as much a right as it is a responsibility. None of these chit birds are going to be the best and brightest for the job. The choice will always be between dumb and dumber, incompetent vs. more incompetent, corrupt vs. more corrupt. Our votes these days aren’t about getting the best man for the job – it’s about damage control and keeping the loons out! I don’t want ghastly skeletal lesbians like Katherine Wynne, or uninformed man-boys like Turdo La Doo leading my country or province. Ideally I want a leader whose primary concern is the young family and is dedicated to helping them get ahead. If they win – we all win because they are the future of our nation – not the pooch screwing teacher’s unions, the screeching sexually disturbed social justice warriors, or the perpetually offended minorities and welfare scum. Your mileage may vary – and that is why you should vote too.
Re-think your position, Alpha Pig. Your vote is the only say you have in gubbermint; there is no nobility or honour in throwing it away.
Left this comment re the geese feeding story. Strange that the Federal Department in charge of wildlife strongly warns against feeding the animals. Their reasoning being that the animals will become dependent and subsequently unable to look after themselves in the future. This, while another Federal Department spends billions feeding humans on welfare.

People who spoil ballots or choose not to vote are simply giving those who vote a proxy to choose for them. Fewer voters gives more power to those who do vote.

I’ll point specifically to Ontario’s FM complaining about “crumbs” because the federal government isn’t going to bail out the OLP 31 billion dollar election promise.
Taking fiscal advise from Charles Sousa is like taking advise on parenting from Ben Levin.
The issue with Facebook commenting and commenters dropping off is not a “chill”, but rather the ability to censor the commenters they disagree with. The Calgary Herald uses this underhanded tactic liberally. The end result is an echo chamber of socialists applauding each others’ stupidity.

There may indeed be people, and large numbers of them, who feel that their only option is spoiling a ballot as a legitimate form of protest. Call it the ‘none of the above’ vote.
Unlike the Soviet Union, we live in a free society with universal franchise. In that free society we exercise our rights or not as we so choose. We may disagree with that right to abstain. But in the end, Glenfilthie is right, by abstaining you lose the legitimacy to criticize the result.
What Paul in Calgary forgets is that honourable people can always disagree about things. What is utterly putrid is being called “a usless (sic) sack of human feces (sic)” for what may well be a reasoned decision. Long past time this chap was banned without a thorough and grovelling apology to the people like alphapig he has insulted.

Losing commenters has nothing to do with the brutal Captcha or that the filter blocks perfectly good comments that a commenter may have spent time and research writing plus that is compounded by the fact that the administrators rarely look into the filter to release these wrongly captured comments and if they actually do, it’s almost always done long after the thread is dead so nobody reads the carefully crafted comment anyway.
Yeah, it’s just the obscenities.
Did you ever listen to the Adam Corolla audiocasts that used to be regularly featured here? Probably not.
Adam “F-Bomb” Corolla was only one of the potty-mouth polemics featured here as blog fodder but let me assure you that even Kate herself has been known to refer to people as “bitches” in her thread topics.

Only ignorance of the ballot counting process allows them to think so.
I’ve spent many hours as a scrutineer and the fact is that the people who count the ballots just glance at the spoiled ballots to observe that they are spoiled and toss them into a bin for counting to account for the total ballots that were cast.
How the ballots are spoiled gets zero attention. The people who count them are volunteers, see, and counting ballots is a grindingly boring job that takes a long time even when voter turnout is low.

During the Ontario elections many people repulsed by Dim Hutak refused to vote Conservative. They got instant results. Within 24 hours he stepped down from PC leadership — something the Party hierarchy could not attain in five+ years. Good riddance.

Me too. Except that even if it were eliminated at the federal level it could still be collected at the provincial level as the Confederation Act of 1867 allows. The good thing would be that it would end the Transfer Payments because then the Feds wouldn’t have that money in the first place to play politics with by threatening to withhold.
People like Trudeau would be up the creek without a paddle if the only revenue the Federal government could collect were Duties and Tariffs as outlined in the Confederation Act of 1867.
It’s not likely the people in the riding of Wascana who elect Ralph Goodale repeatedly have spotted this poll. It’s got to be pretty lonely for Liberals in Saskatchewan. Ralph is a political lone wolf with a lot to say but not necessarily fair or correct in his assessments, an example of which we heard in his critique of yesterday’s Budget.
I voted “other” in the poll, because I think polls are mostly worthless – too many nuisance votes.
That said, I have never failed to vote seriously in any election I was eligible to vote in, in the 44 years since I was first eligible to vote.
Nick Nanos, the CBC liberal poster is claiming PM HARPER is quickly losing support in the west. Funny how Toronto knows so much about us westerners.
